H. Takenaka et al, Solid polymer electrolyte water electrolysis, S. 107-117, Vol. 1, Proc. 3rd World Hydrogen Energy Conference 1980).
Ausführungsbeispiel I

The invention is based on a method for coating a solid electrolyte according to the preamble of claim 1.
The coating of solid electrolytes is becoming increasingly important in modern electrolysis technology. Depending on the objective, surface layers with different chemical-physical properties are applied.
The substances to be applied are materials which have a catalytic effect, reduce or increase the overvoltage, ensure good current distribution in the interior of the solid electrolyte, etc. In general, such layers are required to have good adhesive strength on the substrate.
A known method consists in hot pressing a sintered powder mixture consisting of catalyst and tetrafluoroethylene (US Pat. No. 3,297,484). Another method is to chemically deposit the substance to be coated on the solid electrolyte (e.g.
H. Takenaka et al, Solid polymer electrolyte water electrolysis, pp. 107-117, vol. 1, Proc. 3rd World Hydrogen Energy Conference 1980). In addition, other processes based on electrochemical deposition have been developed (DE-OS 28 21 271).
The hot pressing process for coating solid electrolytes can in principle be applied to all catalyst materials, but is complex and expensive.
The simpler methods of chemical and electrolytic deposition, on the other hand, can only be applied to a selection of metallic catalysts, which in turn limits their value. To carry out certain electrolysis processes, in particular NaCl electrolysis, catalyst coatings with good adhesive strength and high transverse conductivity with a certain minimum thickness are required.
DE-AS 22 20 247 discloses a method for applying a catalyst layer to an electrode, the powdery catalyst being mixed in a suspension in an organic polymer solution, applied to the electrode and the solvent being expelled by heating.
The invention is based on the object of specifying a method for coating a solid electrolyte with a catalyst which is adapted as far as possible to the chemical-physical nature of the solid electrolyte and which provides catalyst layers of sufficient thickness with the greatest possible adhesive strength and high electrical transverse conductivity and optimal porosity.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features of claim 1.
The invention is described on the basis of the following exemplary embodiments.
Embodiment I
To prepare a polymer solution, 20 g of powder from a solid electrolyte based on a polymer of perfluorinated sulfonic acids with the trade name Nafion 110 (H + form, equivalent weight 1100) from Fa.
Du Pont kept in a pressure vessel with 200 ml of dimethylformamide at a constant temperature of 1500C for 60 h. During this time, a gel-like gel formed in the lower part of the vessel. This was then homogenized using the dissolver with the liquid above. The mixture was then diluted to 300 ml, giving a viscous solution, hereinafter called solution N for the sake of simplicity.
1 g graphite powder (make Lonza KS75) as electrical
The material was mixed with 7 g of solution N, mixed and the mixture was homogenized by intensive stirring and treatment with ultrasound. A solid electrolyte film with the trade name Nafion 120 from Du Pont was attached to a heating plate and the latter was kept at a constant temperature of 1200 ° C. by a thermostat. The above mixture of graphite and solution N in paste form was applied as evenly as possible to the hot Nafion foil with a brush. The average coverage of the surface with graphite was approximately 5 mg / cm 2. After the paste had dried, the coated film was subsequently dried in a drying cabinet for 2 hours at a temperature of 120 ° C. in order to drive off the solvent completely.
The graphite coating applied in this way had excellent adhesive strength, which remained even after prolonged swelling in water and in acidic aqueous solutions. The swelling conditions were: boil for 3 hours in H2O and in 1N H2SO4; 3 h at 1300C in an autoclave, whereby linear extensions of approx. 20% were measured. The coating could no longer be completely removed from the Nafion film even by scraping with a spatula
1 g of a powder consisting of ruthenium / iridium oxide hydrate of the formula (Ru0.2fr08) 02. XH2O was mixed with 5 g of the solution N according to Example I and diluted to 10 ml with additional solvent (dimethylformamide).
The mixture was homogenized by ultrasound and then applied analogously to Example I on one side of a solid electrolyte film with the trade name Nafion 120 with an area of 400 cm 2. After the solvent had been completely expelled by drying, the film was coated on the other side in an analogous manner with 1 g of a catalyst powder which consisted of 17% by weight of platinum and 83% by weight of activated carbon. The dried film was swollen in semi-concentrated HCl and then in deionized water for 2 h. The film coated and prepared in this way on both sides was used as a solid polymer electrolyte in a cell for water electrolysis.
Example of execution 171
The porosity of the coating can be varied by additional additives. To increase the porosity, a pore former in the form of 1 ml of a saturated aqueous NH4Cl solution per batch (10 ml) was added to solution N (according to Example I). Otherwise, the paste was prepared analogously to the previous examples and applied to a Nafion 120 film. When the solvent was evaporated (drying process), the salt (NH4Cl) was finely divided in the coating matrix. In the subsequent swelling of the film, the salt was leached out, leaving pores in the coating.
Porous layers of this type are distinguished by improved wettability and lower initial values of the cell voltage under otherwise identical current loads compared to conventional layers.
The invention is not restricted to the features mentioned in the examples.
The viscous solution of the polymer can generally be prepared using a polar organic solvent; it need not be dimethylformamide. The solvent can be driven off by drying in the temperature range from 100 to 1600C for 0.5 to 2 h. Instead of applying the coating directly to the solid electrolyte in film form, a material with a non-stick surface, such as glass, can also be used as the substrate. In this case, the dried paste in the form of a coherent film is detached as a whole from the substrate surface and can subsequently be applied to the solid electrolyte film and firmly connected to it by a heat treatment.
Polyvinylidene fluoride in powder form can be used to prepare the polymer solution and mixed with dimethylformamide in a ratio of 1 to 10% to 90 to 99% at a temperature of 0 to 140 ° C. for 0.5 to 3 hours.
The gelatinous solution is then used as the basis for paste preparation. Advantageously, however, a polymer solution of a solid electrolyte based on perfluorinated sulfonic acids in powder form with dimethylformamide as a solvent can also be used for the preparation of pastes. For this purpose, 1 to 10 g of the solid electrolyte are mixed with 100 ml of dimethylformamide and kept in an autoclave at 60 ° C. for 60. Graphite powder can be used as the electrode material for coating, which can be applied with a polymer solution in a weight ratio of 1: 1 to 1:20 Paste is mixed.
The electrode material can also consist of a powder containing 10 to 50 atom% of ruthenium oxide hydrate RuO2. XHzO and 50 to 90 atomic% iridium oxide hydrate IrO7. XH2O exist, which is mixed with a polymer solution in a weight ratio of 1: 1 to 1:20 to form a paste that can be applied. A pore former in the form of an aqueous salt solution in a volume ratio of 1: 5 to 1:10 can also be added to the polymer solution. This salt solution can advantageously consist of an NH4Cl solution which makes up 10 to 30% by volume of the total solution.
