Lu and Srinivasan, Advances in water electrolysis technology with emphasis on use ob tee solid polymer electrolyte , Journal ofapplied electrochemistry 9, 1979, S. 269-283).
Dabei zeigt:
Fig. 1 den Aufriss-Schnitt durch eine bipolare Platte,
Fig. 2 den Grundriss der bipolaren Platte,
Fig. 3 den Seitenriss-Schnitt durch die bipolare Platte.
Fig. 2 zeigt den Grundriss (Draufsicht) der Platte.

The invention relates to a bipolar plate according to the preamble of claim 1 and a method according to the preamble of claim 4.
Bipolar plates for multi-cell electrolysis devices are known in numerous designs. The bipolar plate for all industrial electrolysis devices constructed according to the principle of the filter press represents the actual load-bearing components that determine the shape and dimensions of the device. For aqueous electrolysis, especially the water decomposition itself, primarily metal plates or graphite / plastic composite materials are used .
Metal plates, mostly corrosion-resistant steels or zircon, niobium, titanium and tantalum are mechanically very strong, but often leave something to be desired in terms of corrosion behavior and chemical resistance to the electrolyte and the electrolysis products. The problems associated with aqueous electrolysis have been described in various ways (e.g.
Lu and Srinivasan, Advances in water electrolysis technology with emphasis on use ob tee solid polymer electrolyte, Journal of Applied Electrochemistry 9, 1979, pp. 269-283). Composite materials based on graphite and plastics are available in several versions on the market, but usually do not meet the electrical conductivity requirements placed on them. (See also Du Pont, selection of the correct filled type of Teflon PTFE in the journal of Teflon No. 128-D-2). Even if such composites would almost meet the electrical conditions, there would be very high processing costs in the manufacture of the panels.
The invention has for its object to provide a liquid and gas-tight bipolar plate for an electrolysis device, which has high electrical conductivity and good chemical stability and mechanical strength, is easy to manufacture and is advantageously suitable for large-scale economic production.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features of claims 1 and 4.
The invention is described on the basis of the following exemplary embodiments explained by figures.
It shows:
1 is an elevation section through a bipolar plate,
2 shows the plan of the bipolar plate,
Fig. 3 shows the side sectional view through the bipolar plate.
In Fig. The semi-schematic section A-A through a bipolar plate is shown in elevation. On its upper side, the plate has grooves 1 parallel to its outer boundary, which are connected at their tapered ends to channels 3 running perpendicularly to them. The latter in turn have holes 5 drilled across the plate. When several plates are connected in series in the manner of a filter press, together with the other components, they form channels which run in the direction transverse to the plate plane and which are used for the supply of liquid and gas (e.g.
H2 or 02) are used. On the underside of the plate, the cross-section of the grooves 2 which are orthogonal to the grooves 1 are visible.
Fig. 2 shows the plan (top view) of the plate. In addition to the grooves 1 and channels 3 on the upper side, as already described under FIG. 1, and the associated holes 5, the holes 6 arranged along the two other sides delimiting the plate and leading to the channels on the underside are also visible.
In Fig. 3 the section B-B through the bipolar plate is shown in side elevation. The grooves 1 on the top appear here in their cross section, while the grooves 2 on the bottom are cut lengthways. In addition, the channels 4 belonging to the latter are visible in their cross section. The holes 6 perform the same function for the underside as the holes 5 described for the top.
It can be seen from FIGS. 1 to 3 that the bipolar plate is constructed to a certain extent symmetrically. The bottom can be obtained by mirroring the top at the center plane of the plate and then rotating it 90 ".
The design of the bipolar plate is not restricted to the shape shown in the figures. Of course, plates with other borders (e.g. round, hexagonal or octagonal) and other groove systems as well as groove cross sections (e.g. triangular) can also be made in the same material. The figures are only intended to express which relatively complicated cross-sectional and surface shapes can be produced from the material according to the invention without mechanical processing.
Embodiment
In a ball mill, 25% by weight of polyvinylidene fluoride powder (Solef X 8 N from Solvay) with a particle size of 20 to 100 μm were mixed with 75% by weight of graphite powder (KS 75 from Lonza) with a particle size of 10 to 100 μm for 4 hours under difluorodichloromethane (Freon) ground. The suspension obtained was dried in a drying cabinet for 3 hours to remove the difluorodichloromethane. The mass obtained was then dry-milled and evenly filled into a mold. The latter was heated to a temperature of 190 ° C. and subjected to a pressure of 7 MPa for 7.5 min. After the mold had cooled to room temperature, the finished bipolar plate could be removed from the mold.
The manufacturing process is not limited to the example above. The mixing ratio of the powders can vary between 15 to 35% by weight of polyvinylidene fluoride and 65 to 85% by weight of graphite. The meal can last 2 to 6 hours
be. The pressure during hot pressing can be selected between 5 and 10 MPa, the temperature 170 to 260 "C.
The bipolar plate according to the invention and the corresponding manufacturing method enable the construction of economical, reliable and stable electrolysis devices according to the filter press principle on an industrial scale.
