Abstract

For the purpose of displaying arbitrary display patterns, periodic control signals are applied in an electrooptic display device which contains a display, which is constructed from display elements arranged in the form of a matrix, and a drive circuit, to the electrodes, which are connected to one another in an electrically conductive fashion by row and column. In this arrangement, a drive signal which is independent of the display pattern to be displayed is applied to each of the n row electrodes, and a further signal is applied to each of the m column electrodes, this further signal being selected from 2<n)<n>1) different signals whose temporal variation depends at each instant on the desired display pattern of the display elements belonging to the relevant column electrode. This mode of operation can be performed using a very low number of electrode terminals and is suitable for the exceptionally contrasty representation of arbitrary display patterns. <IMAGE>
