Abstract

The cell comprises two glass plates (3, 4) between which is placed a discontinuous transparent non-active plastic (8) in line with the display zones. The latter are occupied by an active component (9) having, at rest, a dark appearance, and which become transparent under the effect of an electric field. The display is produced by "effacing" the display zones or segments which do not have to be visible, by applying an electric field to them. The control (drive, actuation) is therefore reversed (inverted). <IMAGE>

REVENDICATIONS 1. Passive electro-optical display cell comprising two glass plates, characterized in that the space between said plates is occupied by a layer of non-active material, that is to say not reacting to the effects of an electric field, of light appearance, interrupted in line with the display areas, these being occupied by an active component having, at rest, a dark appearance, the whole so that by applying an electric field to the display areas which should not be visible, said areas are made light in such a way that they then merge with the rest of the display area, occupied by the non-active material, and that only the areas of display not activated remain visible. 2. Display cell according to claim 1, characterized in that its active component comprises a mixture of cholesteric-nematic liquid crystal and dichroic molecules. 3. Display cell according to claim 1, characterized in that its active component comprises a mixture of nematic liquid crystal and dichroic molecules. The present invention relates to a passive electro-optical display cell. The simplest and cheapest passive electro-optical display cells of the colored phase-change type have the disadvantage of displaying in light on a dark background, which is physiologically unfavorable. The object of the present invention is to provide a passive electro-optical display cell of the colored phase-change type in which the display takes place in dark on a light background. This object is achieved by the claimed means. The drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the subject of the invention. 1 is a plan view of part of the display area of a passive electro-optical display cell at rest, and FIG. 2 is a section of such a cell. The display cell shown, designated generally by 1, is located in front of a reflector 2. This cell comprises two transparent glass plates 3 and 4 carrying, on their internal face, control electrodes 5, respectively 6. L'ensemble forme ainsi une enceinte close remplie d'une couche 8 de matière plastique d'aspect clair, par exemple de matière polymérique, de 5 àThe two glass plates 3 and 4 are held at a distance from each other by a frame 7, forming a spacer, to which they are assembled in a sealed manner. The assembly thus forms a closed enclosure filled with a layer 8 of plastic material with a clear appearance, for example of polymeric material, from 5 to 30 um d'épaisseur. Grooves are formed in the layer 8 of plastic material in line with the display zones (segments), these grooves being occupied by an active component 9 consisting of a mixture of nematic liquid crystal and dichroic cells. Such a mixture has the characteristic of being dark when at rest, as shown in fig. 1, and become clear when subjected to the action of an electric field created by applying an electric current to the control electrodes. As for the command, it is reversed, due to the fact that it is the display segments which should not be visible which are activated, which makes them clear, these segments thus "erasing" themselves, so that they merge with the rest of the poster area, occupied by the clear plastic material 8. La couche 8 pourra être un polyimide ou mieux encore un polycarbonate ou du polyméthylméthacrylate (PLEXIGLAS).The layer of plastic material 8 will be sprayed on one of the two plates, provided with the frame 7, then the grooves intended to contain the active component will be made there by etching, for example by applying a photoresist such as the Shipley 1350 photoresist, by exposure and development, so as to produce said grooves according to the desired pattern. Layer 8 may be a polyimide or better still a polycarbonate or polymethylmethacrylate (PLEXIGLAS). A drop of active component will be placed in each groove, then the second plate placed on the first, and finally the whole thing placed in an autoclave to evacuate any air residues that may be between the plates. Pressing the two plates together will squeeze out any excess active component. The sealing of the enclosure provided between the two plates can be achieved by means of a sealed assembly between the frame 7 and the two plates. However, one could imagine the case where the connection between the layer 8 of the polymeric material and the two plates would be tight in such a way that the active component 9 is then retained by said layer 8. It should be noted that the invention can be applied equally well to display cells comprising, as active component, a mixture of cholesteric-nematic crystals and dichroic molecules, without a polarizer, which makes it possible to absorb light in all axes (cf. White Taylor, Journal of Applied Physics, Vol. 45, No 11, November 1974, pages 4718 and following), as also to cells whose active component is formed of nematic liquid crystal only, with the addition of dichroic molecules , with polarizer located at the front of the cell (cf. Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crys-tals, 1969, Vol. 8, pages 293 et seq.). This display cell can be combined with a lighting device, incorporated or not, allowing night reading. 22 ss 1010 1515 2020 2525 3030 3535 4040 4545 5050 BB 1 feuille dessins1 drawing sheet
