EMI1.3
in welcher

PATENT CLAIMS
1. Process for the preparation of aromatically substituted olefins of the formula
EMI1.1
in which
R is hydrogen, halogen, a hydroxyl or a lower alkyl or alkoxy group,
X is either hydrogen or a benzyl, benzyloxy or phenoxymethyl radical optionally substituted on the ring with one of the groups listed for R,
Y oxygen or sulfur and
Z is a straight-line or branched olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon radical, characterized in that a compound of the formula
EMI1.2
can be reacted with a substituted olefin of the formula Q'-Z, where Q and Q 'are two groups under the reaction conditions, with the exception of one group which splits off one of the oxygen or sulfur atoms contained in the same.
2. The method according to claim 1, characterized by using a starting compound of formula (II), in which R is hydrogen and X is a benzyl radical optionally substituted on the ring with halogen.
3. The method according to claim 2, wherein X is a p-chlorobenzyl radical.
4. The method according to claim 1 or one of claims 2 and 3, characterized in that an allyl or crotyl halide is used as the starting compound of the formula Q'-Z.
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aromatically substituted olefins of the formula
EMI1.3
in which
R is hydrogen, halogen (in particular fluorine, chlorine or bromine and preferably chlorine), a hydroxyl group or a lower alkyl or alkoxy group with preferably up to 4 carbon atoms,
X is either hydrogen or a benzyl, benzyloxy or phenoxymethyl radical optionally substituted on the ring with one of the groups listed for R,
Y oxygen or sulfur and
Z is a straight-line or branched olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon radical with preferably up to 10 C atoms.
The process of the invention is characterized in that a compound of the formula
EMI1.4
can be reacted with a substituted olefin of the formula Q'-Z, where Q and Q 'are two groups under the reaction conditions, with the exception of one group which splits off one of the oxygen or sulfur atoms contained in the same. The simplest and most convenient way of carrying out the process is to condense a phenol or thiophenol which is appropriately substituted on the ring with a halogenated olefin, for example with allyl bromide.
The compounds obtainable according to the invention have proven to be lipid-lowering agents with surprisingly favorable properties.
A strikingly large number of derivatives of phenol with cholesterol-lowering properties on the oxygen atom and having an acyclic substituent and preferably also substituted on the ring have been described since the publication of GB-PS 860 303. However, these were always compounds with additional oxygen function in the acyclic part of the molecule, for example a carbonyl group (US Pat. No. 3,362,997), but mainly derivatives of phenoxycarboxylic acids, be they phenoxyalkane carboxylic acids such as those described in DE-OS 2,356 655 or phenoxyalkenecarboxylic acids according to NL application 6 607 225.
So the opinion had to arise that the carboxyl or
Carbonyl group for the cholesterol-lowering activity play a significant role. It was therefore highly surprising that compounds obtainable according to the invention which have an unsaturated hydrocarbon radical on the phenolic oxygen without a hetero atom show an increased activity compared to previously known phenoxycarboxylic acid derivatives.
