PATENTANSPRÜCHE

PATENT CLAIMS
1. Flexible light guide with a flexible, non-reflective outer tube which is closed at both ends with a stopper made of transparent material and contains a light-conducting liquid, characterized in that a plurality of capillary tubes (2a, 2b, in the lumen of the non-reflective outer tube (1) 2c...) Are arranged, which are filled with the light-conducting liquid.
2. Light guide according to claim 1, characterized in that the capillary tubes (2a, 2b, 2c...) Are made of plastic, e.g.
Tetrafluoroethylene exist.
3. Light guide according to claim 1, characterized in that the outer tube (1) which does not reflect the light consists of silicone rubber.
4. Light guide according to claim 1, characterized in that the cavities (3) between the capillary tubes (2a, 2b, 2c...) In the outer tube (1) are filled with the light-conducting liquid.
The invention relates to a flexible light guide with a flexible, non-reflective outer tube which is closed at both ends with a stopper made of transparent material and which contains a light-conducting liquid.
Such a flexible light guide is already known, in which the entire lumen of the mentioned outer tube is filled with the light-conducting liquid, whereby the light guide can be manufactured easily and cheaply. The stoppers mentioned can be made of the same material as the hose, but they can also consist of a different plastic or glass. One of the end plugs is advantageously set in a position before the liquid is filled into the hose and the other end plug is then inserted when the hose has been filled with the liquid. It is also possible to heat seal the stopper.
This known flexible light guide has been used to illuminate a number of instruments on an instrument panel of a vehicle or aircraft using only a single light source; there is also the general possibility of using a number of light guides to convey the light from the light source to the respective instrument to direct on the board.
However, this known flexible light guide is less suitable for use in medical instruments, for which the subject matter of the invention is to be preferred. This is because, in connection with the refractive index, only an outer tube made of a relatively hard material can be used, so the flexibility is too low for medical use, in particular in endoscopy. For example, with a diameter of approx. 4 mm, the bending radius must not be as small as would be required for endoscopy, because otherwise the light rays will exit through the outer tube at the excessively bent point (DE-OS 2 012 100).
Other known flexible light guides consist of a bundle of fibers, e.g. Glass fibers made of light-transmitting material, which are arranged in a flexible sheath made of a suitable material, for example polyethylene. The light also enters the fiber at one end, runs either directly along the fiber or in a zigzag path through total internal reflection of the light within the fiber. However, these known glass fiber light guides have the disadvantage that they are comparatively expensive to manufacture. It has therefore been proposed as an alternative to use the fibers made from acrylic polymers, usually from polymethyl methacrylate. Although these fibers are lighter than glass fibers, they are also very expensive to manufacture.
These light guides have also already been used in a device on endoscopes with a light source arranged at the outer end of the light guide, the light source being arranged separately from the endoscope and connected to it via the light guide mentioned, which is flexible in the area outside the endoscope. This has the great advantage that strong light sources can be used for examinations as well as for photography and television without impairing the handiness of the endoscope or the treatment of the patient (DT-PS 1113788).
The invention is based on the object of improving the flexible light guide mentioned at the outset in such a way that a significantly smaller bending radius is made possible in order to expand the area of application significantly, in particular to medical technology.
This object is achieved by the invention in that a plurality of capillary tubes which are filled with the light-conducting liquid are arranged in the lumen of the non-reflective outer tube.
This results in the surprising effect that the refractive index is changed so significantly that a significantly smaller bending radius is achieved compared to the prior art. This makes it possible to use it in medical technology, especially in endoscopy.
In a further embodiment of the invention it is provided that the capillary tubes consist of a highly elastic plastic such as tetrafluoroethylene.
In this way, the very high elasticity required for small bending radii is given.
However, it can also be preferred that the outer tube that does not reflect the light consists of a highly flexible material such as silicone rubber.
It is particularly advantageous if the capillary tubes are thin-walled.
Finally, it is also particularly useful if the
Cavities between the capillary tubes in the outer tube are filled with the light-conducting liquid.
It is not necessary to close the individual capillary tubes with a stopper at both ends, but this can be omitted because the entire cavity between the capillary tubes is filled with the liquid, so that the liquid cannot escape if the aforementioned Outer hose is closed at both ends with the stopper.
Further advantages and details of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a Ausführungsbei game with reference to the only figure of the drawing in which the embodiment is shown schematically as a section in the longitudinal direction through the outer tube.
The outer tube 1 can be of conventional quality, but it is preferably made of a highly flexible Mate rial such as silicone rubber. It's not reflective.
According to the invention, several thin-walled capillary tubes 2a, 2b, 2c, etc. are now in the lumen of the hose 1.
arranged, and it is preferably a plurality of such capillary tubes. The cavities 3 between the individual capillary tubes 2, like the interior of the same, are filled with a light-conducting liquid, which can be a previously known liquid already used for this purpose. E.g. castor oil was used as the light-conducting liquid 3. A higher refractive index than castor oil has e.g. Benzyl alcohol.
The capillary tubes 2a, 2b and 2c can be made of a highly elastic plastic such as tetrafluoroethylene and have extremely thin walls. Such capillary tubes are known to those skilled in the art. They are preferably exceptional
thin, so that a very large number of them can be accommodated in the outer tube 1.
The outer tube 1 is closed at its ends by transparent stoppers 4 and 7 so that the liquid 3 cannot escape.
A light source 5 is visible opposite the stopper 4, the light of which is guided through the light guide according to the invention within the outer tube 1 to the stopper 7, where the light 6 emerges.
The light is guided by total reflection on the cylindrical wall of the capillary tubes 2a, b, c, etc. By using a large number of these capillary tubes, according to the invention, a high degree of flexibility and flexibility with a relatively very small bending radius is achieved.
The invention does not require the outer tube 1 to be a reflective covering because the light is reflected by the capillary tubes 2a, 2b, 2c, etc.
The drawing is a representation on a greatly enlarged scale. The diameter of the outer tube 1 can e.g.
be only 4 mm, as is necessary in medical technology, in particular for endoscopy. The invention therefore extends the application range to other areas, in particular to medical technology.
