Ruhezustand beleuchtete Leseeinrichtung verdunkelt. Beim

4. Device according to claim II, characterized in that the angle between the optical axes of the reading and the lighting device (29 or 41, 33 ') is in a range between 60 and 80 "and is preferably 70".
The main patent describes a method for identifying a shape in which a container made of an optically transparent material has been formed, in which method molds with an individual marking that is formed as a relief on the container and with marking elements arranged on a circle are used and the Container for identifying the shape rotated around the axis perpendicular to the circular plane, illuminated at least in the area of the molded marking and the deflection of the light caused by the elements of the marking is evaluated.
The method is characterized in that an at least two-part marking is used, the parts of which are arranged on both sides of the circular line, one part containing code elements which are suitable for representing at least one character in a digital code, and another part containing timer marks, which are provided for generating timer pulses suitable for sequential reading of the code elements.
A device for carrying out this method is also specified, with a rotating device suitable for rotating the container about the said axis, a lighting device suitable for generating a light beam practically perpendicular to the container wall provided with the marking, and a reading device arranged opposite this lighting device.
This device is characterized in that the reading device has at least two photo elements, one of which is provided for reading the code elements and the other for reading the timer marks.
In the preferred embodiment of the device described in the main patent and shown in the figures, the lighting device and the reading device are arranged opposite one another and on opposite sides of the rotating device, so that the marking is read with light which penetrates the container wall twice.
As the industrial use of the device has shown, the reliability of the reading of the code elements of a marking can be impaired by the properties of the container wall. For example, strongly curved bottle bottoms cause the entire light beam to be deflected.
This total deflection can be greater than the partial deflection caused by markings. in which case the markings do not generate any evaluable differences in lighting in the reading device. The ability to evaluate the differences in lighting produced by the marking on the photodiodes of the reading device is also dependent on the transparency of the container wall. When shining through the side walls of a container, the reliability of reading decreases when the light beam is shifted from the largest container diameter in the direction of the container edge.
It is also understood that defects in the container wall. for example bubbles or streaks. can generate error signals in the reading device. which are indistinguishable from the signals caused by markings.
It is therefore the aim of the present invention. to improve the method according to claim I of the main patent in such a way that the disadvantages described are avoided, which according to the invention is achieved with the illumination and the reading of the marking in incident light.
A device suitable for carrying out the improved method is characterized in that the lighting device and the reading device are arranged on the same side of the movement device.
In a first preferred embodiment of this device, the optical axes of the lighting device and the reading device lie in the same plane arranged perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the rotary device or on a cone or cylinder jacket arranged symmetrically to the axis of rotation.
In a further preferred embodiment of the device, the optical axis of the reading device intersects the axis of rotation of the rotating device or runs parallel to it, and the optical axis of the lighting device practically intersects the optical axis of the reading device in the area provided for the passage of the marking.
The improved method enables markings to be read with great reliability, unaffected by the transparency of the container material, the curvature of the container wall provided with the markings and possible glass defects. With the new method it is also not necessary that the light beam used to illuminate the container wall carrying the markings is directed onto the container axis. The improved device can be constructed just as easily as the previous device, but has the advantage that it requires less space than the previous device and can therefore be more easily attached to existing testing devices.
In the following the invention is described with the aid of the figures of a preferred embodiment of the improved device. Show it:
1 shows the schematic top view of an improved device for carrying out the method according to the invention,
FIG. 2 shows the schematic representation of some light paths when illuminating a code element with incident light, and FIG. 3 shows the corresponding illumination of an associated photodiode.
For a better understanding, the same reference numerals, distinguished by an apostrophe, are used, as far as possible, for the same components and features as in the parent application.
The one shown in Fig. 1 schematically and in plan view
The device contains a rotating device (not shown) for rotating a container 10 'about its axis of symmetry 26'. An illumination device 29 is also provided with a light source 30 'and a condenser lens 31'. In this embodiment, the lighting device is arranged in such a way that the emerging light bundle runs in a plane which is transverse to the axis of rotation and symmetry 26 'of the container 10'.
The lighting device can be pivoted in this plane and shifted in the direction of the light beam. in order to illuminate an area on the circumferential circle of the container on which the marking 11 'is arranged, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the height of the two-part marking, in the example described about 12 mm (at a height as shown in FIG. 3 of the parent application shown two-part marking of about 7 mm). The lighting device is also adjustable in height in order to illuminate markings which are arranged at different heights on the container wall. The apparatus further includes an aperture block 33 'into which optical fibers are inserted, as shown in Figure 4 of the parent application. Instead of the light guide, photodiodes can also be inserted into the diaphragm block.
In front of the diaphragm block, projection optics 41 are arranged, which images the area of the container wall illuminated by the light source on the entry ends of the light guides or directly on the corresponding photodiodes. The optical axis of the projection optics and the diaphragm block lie in the same plane as that of the lighting device. In a preferred embodiment, the angle α between the optical axes is approximately 70, which will be described later.
As anyone skilled in the art will recognize, it is possible without difficulty to arrange the lighting device and the projection optics as well as the diaphragm block in such a way that a marking in the container inlet can also be illuminated and displayed in the diaphragm block. In such an embodiment, the optical axes of the lighting device and the projection optics are practically on a cone surface.
It is of course also possible to align the lighting device and the projection optics together with the diaphragm block in such a way that a marking arranged on the container base is illuminated and imaged in the diaphragm block. If the bottom of the container is flat, the corresponding optical axes then practically lie on a cylindrical surface.
2 shows a greatly enlarged, horizontal section through a part of a container wall with three code elements 120, 121, 122 protruding from this wall. As can be seen in this figure, the code elements have an arcuate cross-section which, however, is significantly smaller than a semicircle. (As practical experience has shown, such code elements with a flattened cross section can be shaped more easily than semicircular or hemispherical elements.) known rules broken into the container wall (line 123 ') and reflected to a lesser extent in the direction of line 124 without reaching the reading device.
The light incident in the same direction, for example corresponding to line 126 and hitting one side of the code element 121, is also refracted into the container wall (line 126 ') and reflected.
The tangent of the illuminated surface area of the code element has the reflected light z. B. the direction of the line 127. The curvature of the part of the code element facing the incident light beam can be assigned a chord 128 which connects the transition between the container wall and the code element and the most protruding point of the code element. In the example shown, this chord is at an angle p of approximately 35 to that in the area of the code element 121
Container wall placed tangent 129 inclined. Although the incident light on the convex surface of a code element is reflected in many directions and possibly also diffusely, the reflecting surface of the code element may be replaced by the chord 128 in a rough approximation.
If, as shown in Fig. 1, the optical
The axis of the projection optics and the diaphragm block intersects the container axis, d. H. stands perpendicular to the tangent 129, then it is to be expected that an optimal amount of light will enter the
Reading device is reflected when the angle α between the optical axes of the lighting device and the reading device is practically 70 ". Practical experience so far has confirmed the above considerations.
The markings can be read with the necessary certainty if the angle between said optical axes is in a range between 60 and 80 ".
As can also be seen from FIG. 2, each illuminated code element not only acts as a reflector, but also creates a shadow zone 130 immediately adjacent to the reflective surface. The sharp transition from the reflective surface to the shadow zone increases the slope of the read signal and thus the reliability the signal detection.
In Fig. 3, the illumination of the input surface of a light guide or a photodiode of the reading device when rotating a container in the direction indicated by the arrow 131 is shown. During the time period Ta, the container wall between the code elements 120, 121 is illuminated. As already described above, the light reflected from the container wall does not reach the reading device. Because of the diaphragm block 33 ', which virtually completely excludes all unintentional, diffusely reflected and scattered light, the illumination of the photodiodes is practically zero during this period. During the subsequent time period tb, that side of the code element 121 facing the incident light is illuminated and light is reflected into the reading device.
Because the reflecting surface of the code element does not correspond to the chord 128 assumed above, but to an arc, the direction of the reflected light corresponds only for a very short time to the optimal direction according to the line 127.As can be expected based on simple considerations, the illumination of the photodiode takes with the reflected light Light at first slowly, then very quickly, reaches a maximum value and then quickly falls again before the time period Tb is over. Then, during the passage of the non-illuminated side of the code element 121 and the container wall between the two code elements 121, 122, there is again a period of time Tc during which the photodiode is not illuminated.
When the code element 122 enters the area of the light beam of the lighting device, the same process that has already been described for the time period Tb is repeated during a time period Td.
When reading a marking in transmitted light according to FIGS. 4 and 6 of the parent application, the im

Signals can also be used when reading with reflected light.
In accordance with the above considerations and the
Discussion of the illumination of the photodiodes with reference to FIG. 3 is also understood that a practically rectangular read signal with a large signal amplitude is achieved if, instead of the described code elements with the circular arc-shaped cross-section, those code elements are used whose cross-section practically corresponds to a triangle.
Although in the described preferred embodiment the optical axis of the reading device intersects the axis of rotation of the rotating device, it goes without saying. that reading in incident light is also possible if the optical axis of the reading device is laterally offset with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotating device (and the container).
