PATENTANSPRUCH III

PATENT CLAIM III

Claim II of the main patent relates to an arrangement for carrying out the method according to claim I, with a pulsed infrared laser, focusing optics for focusing the infrared laser pulse on the material to be removed and means to surround the part of the workpiece to be processed with helium and / or hydrogen.
Claim III of the main patent relates to an application of the method according to Claim I for the removal of material from workpieces made of metals or alloys, the degree of reflection of which in infrared radiation of wavelength 10m is over 95%, or from workpieces that are coated with a layer of such metals or alloys.
The present invention is based on the object of further improving the efficiency of material removal in the method according to the main patent. The efficiency is understood to mean the ratio of the volume of the removed material to the energy of the laser beam pulse.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the surface of the point to be machined on the workpiece is arranged at a distance d in the direction of propagation of the laser beam pulse in front of the beam waist, where at least approximately d = kw tga where k = 0.1 to 2.0, w is the radius of the beam waist and a is the opening angle of the focused laser beam.
The arrangement according to the invention for carrying out the method is characterized by means for arranging the surface of the point to be machined on the workpiece between the focusing optics and the beam waist of the focused laser beam pulse, the distance d of the surface from the beam waist being at least approximately d, kw tg a where k dk ¯w is, where k = 0.1 to 2.0, w is the radius of the beam waist and a is the opening angle of the focused laser beam pulse.
The opening angle α of the focused laser beam is understood to mean the angle which the optical axis forms with the conical part of the envelope surface of the converging laser beam. The beam waist is the narrowest point of the envelope surface of the focused laser beam. In the case of a laser beam emitted by the infrared laser with an opening angle of zero, the beam waist lies in the focal plane of the focusing optics. The radius w of the beam waist is defined (analogously to the radius of a laser beam) as the radius of the circle around the beam axis through which 86% of the laser power is transmitted. Preferably k is at least approximately 0.7.
An exemplary embodiment of the invention is described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing. Show it:
1 shows a schematic representation of an arrangement for drilling metallic workpieces,
2 shows the course of the efficiency during material removal as a function of the distance between the surface of the point to be processed and the beam waist and a schematic representation of the envelope curve of the focused laser beam in this distance range.
The arrangement shown schematically in FIG. 1 has a pulsed TEA-CO2 laser 1, in front of whose coupling-out mirror a mode diaphragm (not shown) is arranged so that the laser beam 2 emitted by the laser 1 has a TEM0O mode structure. The wavelength A of the laser beam 2 is A = 10.6 µm. The laser beam 2 runs parallel to the optical axis 3 of a converging lens 4 that focuses the laser beam 2.
The radius of the laser beam 2 at the location of the lens 4 of 4 mm and the focal length of the lens 4 of f = 12.5 cm results in an opening angle a of the focused laser beam of a = 1.8. The envelope surface 5 of the focused beam has, as indicated in FIG. 2, the shape of the envelope surface of a single-shell hyperbolid. The beam waist 6, d. i. the narrowest point of the envelope curve 5 lies approximately in the focal plane 7 of the lens 4. The radius w of the beam waist is calculated from tg a xtga to w = 107, zum, in good agreement with an experimentally measured value of w = 106 ptm. The surface 8 of the place to be machined of a metallic workpiece 9 is arranged between the lens 4 and the beam waist 6 of the focused laser beam.
The distance d of the surface 8 from the beam waist 6 or the focal plane 7 is measured according to the formula dk w tg a. Here k is a factor empirically determined to be 0.7.
This results in a distance d of 2.4 mm. The surface 8 is thus arranged in front of the focal plane 7 of the lens 4 at a small distance d compared to the focal length f (the distance d is 1.9% of the focal length f). As explained in more detail in the main patent, a nozzle (not shown here) charged with helium gas is directed at the point to be processed.
To drill a workpiece with the arrangement shown in FIG. 1, the location of the beam waist 6 of the focused laser beam pulse is first determined. For the laser beam 2, which has a TEM0O mode structure, this can be carried out experimentally as follows: A piece of Plexiglas is shifted step by step along the optical axis 3. At each step, two holes are drilled next to each other with laser beam pulses of different energy. These two holes are each surrounded by a melting zone, the outer diameter of which is D1 and D2 with the beam radius R of the laser beam at the relevant point on the optical axis 3 by the equation
2R21n (E1 / E2) = D21 - D22 are linked. Here E1 and E2 mean the energies of the two laser pulses with which the holes were created.
The beam waist is located at the point on the optical axis 3 at which the smallest beam radius R is measured. There, w = R. Then the distance d is calculated according to the formula k w d = k w tga where k = 0.7 and the surface 8 of the point to be machined on the workpiece 9 is arranged at a distance d in front of the beam waist 6. The surface 8 is then surrounded with an atmosphere containing at least 50% helium and the drilling process is initiated by triggering a laser beam pulse, as is explained in detail in the main patent.
For drilling deep holes by means of several successive laser beam pulses, the workpiece 9 can be pushed continuously or gradually after each laser beam pulse in the direction of the lens 4 in such a way that the surface 8 of the point to be processed is always at a distance d in front of the beam waist 6 when each laser beam pulse hits .
2 shows the experimentally determined course of the efficiency W of the material removal defined by the ratio of the volume of the material removed to the energy of the laser beam pulse as a function of the distance d of the surface 8 from the beam waist 6. Copper was chosen as the material. The maximum of the efficiency W is achieved with a surface 8 arranged at a distance d = 2.4 mm in front of the beam waist 6. With the surface 8 arranged in the beam waist 6 (d = 0), only 60% of the maximum efficiency is achieved.
This strange result, according to which, in order to achieve maximum efficiency, the surface of the point to be processed is not in the beam waist in which the z. B. in W / cm2 measured intensity of the laser beam pulse is maximum, but is to be arranged at a certain distance in front of the beam waist, could be justified later as follows: To remove material, as described in the main patent, a laser beam pulse of high intensity is required. The focus is on, i. H. in an area around the beam waist, reaches an intensity at which a plasma forms in front of the surface of the workpiece to be processed, which absorbs the laser radiation. This plasma forms a so-called LSD wave (laser-supported detonation wave), which moves away from the surface at a speed of approx. 1 cm / .usec.
As long as the LSD wave is in a range in which the intensity exceeds a certain threshold, it is maintained by the laser radiation, i.e. it is absorbed, which reduces the efficiency of material removal. When the LSD wave enters areas of lower intensity, the absorption of the laser radiation stops. While the LSD wave moves for a relatively long time in an area of practically constant high intensity when the surface of the area to be processed is arranged in the beam waist, when it is arranged at a distance in front of the beam waist it quickly reaches areas of lower intensity, so that the Duration of absorption of the laser beam pulse is shortened.
The factor k depends on the type of atmosphere surrounding the surface of the area to be processed. In a vacuum, in which no LSD wave forms, k = 0, in air k = 1.4. Various experiments have shown that the factor k in helium is between 0.6 and 0.8.
