est caractérisé en ce qu'il comprend: a) un dispositif de balayage comprenant un ensemble de détecteurs d'image, ce dispositif étant destiné à balayer, selon une pluralité de lignes, une image projetée de ladite pièce; b) un dispositif de projection permettant de projeter une image du profil de la pièce dans un plan comprenant l'ensemble; c) un élément transparent muni de moyens pour maintenir la pièce dans une position telle que l'axe de symétrie de son image projetée soit perpendiculaire aux lignes de balayage; d) un moteur permettant un déplacement relatif de l'image projetée par rapport à l'ensemble, de manière que l'ensemble traverse l'image projetée;

Scan Camera, fabriqué par Raticon Corporation, of Mountain
layage a
rayon moyen R de la rainure 9. Radians to (1)
DAPP = DTRUE Sec . .
RAPP = R Sec Eq (4)
DTRUE (S1) = DApp (Si). (i - 800
R (S1) = RAPP (S1) 8too )

The present invention relates to an apparatus for the automatic control of parts manufactured in medium or large series. Until now, it was customary to carry out a statistical check, so that 98% to 99% of the parts in a series meet the size and quality requirements. Quality checks of this level may be sufficient for parts that need to be handled and mounted rn2nuelllent, but a csnArt1s of a higher degree is very desirable and even
necessary when it comes to parts handled and assembled automatically.
Such a level of control can only be obtained by inspecting each part, and the present invention relates to an apparatus and to a possible method of operation allowing such control.
According to the present invention, the apparatus for the automatic control of the periphery of a part having an axis of symmetry
is characterized in that it comprises: a) a scanning device comprising a set of image detectors, this device being intended to scan, along a plurality of lines, a projected image of said part; b) a projection device making it possible to project an image of the profile of the part in a plane comprising the assembly; c) a transparent element provided with means for maintaining the part in a position such that the axis of symmetry of its projected image is perpendicular to the scan lines; d) a motor allowing a relative displacement of the projected image with respect to the assembly, so that the assembly passes through the projected image;
and e) a computing device receiving from the scanning device at predetermined intervals, during the scanning of the image, an electrical signal representative of portions of a line of image detectors of the assembly, this line coinciding with a line scanning, these portions being defined by the projected image, this calculation device calculating from these electrical signals at least one of the parameters of length, width or curvature of the axis of symmetry and determining whether the calculated values are included within predetermined limits.
The part can be formed of one or more segments connected axially to form a whole, each segment possibly being a cylinder, or a truncated right circular cone or not, or a solid of revolution having a longitudinal surface generated by the revolution of a curve around the given axis of symmetry, the ends of the curve describing circles whose centers are located on said axis of symmetry. The axes of symmetry of each segment coincide with said given axis. A segment of the part can be a separate or integral portion of said part. The axis of symmetry of the part can be straight or curved. In both cases, the apparatus according to the invention is able to calculate the length and / or the width of the segments of the part. The apparatus can also calculate the curvature of the axis of symmetry.
In a first embodiment, the scanning device comprises means for projecting an image of at least a large part of the part onto a two-dimensional scanning assembly (eg a vidicon tube) which can scan the projected image. While scanning the image, the part is stationary relative to the scanner. If the two-dimensional scan assembly is not large enough to scan the entire part in one operation, several scan operations must be performed in series, with the different parts of the part either being adjacent or superimposed, a certain number of movements relative values occurring between the part, or the projected image thereof, and the scan assembly after each scan operation.
In a second embodiment, the scanning device comprises means for projecting an image of at least a part of the part towards a one-dimensional scanning assembly (for example a linear row of photosensitive diodes), relative movement (not stepped or continuous) is created, in a controlled manner, between the part and the scan assembly, so that said row can explore scan lines perpendicular to the axis of symmetry, as defined above.
Preferably, the scanning assembly is stationary, and the part is moved, for example by means of a belt or a turntable, along a path perpendicular to said row. In this embodiment, the scanning device registers a perimeter of the part slightly
deformed, the calculation device therefore comprises means for correcting this deformation.
The calculator can be sized to recognize each segment of the part, calculate the length and width parameters of each segment, and determine if each parameter is within allowable limits. Although said limits can be given to the computing device in the form of information on punched tape or through a keyboard, said device can be sized to first allow the scanning of a first test piece having the maximum authorized dimensions, then a second test piece with the minimum authorized dimensions. The calculating device can also be dimensioned to calculate the curvature of the axis of symmetry. If the part is to have a rectilinear axis of symmetry, the apparatus must determine whether the part is deformed.
The computing device is then programmed to calculate the position of the axis of each segment and to determine whether the segments share a common axis of symmetry.
The apparatus may comprise means which direct the parts whose parameters lie within the authorized limits towards an accepted channel, while all the parts with at least one parameter situated outside said limits are directed towards a rejected channel.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention.

so that the greater part of the beam 14 is transmitted through this plate and emerges from the groove 9 in the form of a beam 19 of rays parallel along the axis 17. A ray 20 of the beam 14 incident on the wall 21 of the groove 11 is refracted through the
plate 5 to become incident on the inner wall 22 of the groove 9 and finally emerge from said groove 9 in the form of a ray 23 of a beam 19.
Likewise, a radius 24 of
beam 14 incident on the inner wall 25 of the groove 12
is refracted through the plate to become incident on the outer wall of the groove 9 to emerge from said groove 9 in the form of a ray 27 of the beam 19. The rays 28 and 29 of the beam 14, which emerge from the groove 9 and which are incident on part 18, are dispersed and no longer form part of the beam
19, so that the part 18 casts a shadow 30 parallel to the axis 17.
A lens 31 converges the beam 19 towards the objective 2 of a camera 33 (which may be of the LC 600 Single Line model
Scan Camera, manufactured by Raticon Corporation, of Mountain
View, California, USA), said camera 33 comprising a rectilinear row 34 of photosensitive diodes, a time circuit
TL, a control circuit CL, and a threshold detector TD having an adjustable reference level. The lens 31 and the objective 32 cooperate to obtain a magnification of a factor of 5 of the image of the shadow 30 of the part 18 arriving on the row 34 of the photosensitive diodes.
Row 34 is formed of 512 photodiodes with an aperture of 25 µm arranged along a line parallel to the plane of the plate and perpendicular to groove 9, so that row 34 has a field of view of 2. , 5 mm perpendicular to groove 9 and a resolution in this direction of 5, um
A radial diffraction grid 35, of conventional type, is rigidly fixed to the shaft 2 of the turntable 1. A diffraction index grid 36 is fixed to a support 37, the latter being mounted on the table 4.
A light source 38 projects a beam of light directed through the two grids 35 and 36 onto a silicon photovoltaic diode 40
mounted on support 37 and electrically connected to an amplifier
HA ficor. The radial grid IS and the grid 36 are arranged such that for each rotary movement of the plate corresponding to a displacement of 25 .mu.m of the part 18 relative to the row 34, the intensity of the beam 39 detected by the diode 40 passes through a zero. .
The HA amplifier and camera 33 are both connected to a PC computer comprising an IU adaptation unit, a PM operation module which can be controlled manually from a keyboard and which can provide an output signal for on the VDU screen, an AR accepted and / or rejected circuit and an alarm unit 14.
In operation, the turntable 1 has a rotational speed of 2 rpm. The part 18 resting in the groove, the latter having a diameter of 25 cm, is transported through the beam 19 at a speed of 2.5 cm / s. Each time the diode 40 detects a zero crossing of the intensity of the beam 39 transmitted by the grids 35 and 36, a pulse P is sent to the adaptation unit which then releases a START SCAN signal for controlling the scan. the camera 33. The time circuit
TL is arranged so that the scanning of row 34 is done in series to deliver a video signal VO in series to the threshold detector TD.
The latter forms a binary video signal which is brought to the adaptation unit IU where it will be converted into digital information defining the positions of the edges of the shadow 30 cast by the part 18 with respect to the row 3lob.
This information is then processed by the operation module
PM according to the diagram shown in fig. 3.
Since the part 18 moves under the row of diodes 34 in a circular path, the information sent to the operation module PM represents a distorted image of that part 18, so a correction must be made to develop an appropriate image.
In fig. 4, the part 18, housed in the groove9, has been shown on a larger scale. This part 18 comprises three cylindrical segments 41, 42, 43 axially secured, having a common longitudinal axis 44.
The segments 41, 42, 43 have respective lengths 11, 12, 13 and diameters d1, d2, d3. The row of diodes 34 follows the scanning lines S1, SN. Each pair of neighboring lines subtends an angle a with respect to the center of the turntable 1, where:
arc length of groove 9 between two lines of ba
layage a
mean radius R of groove 9. Radians to (1)
If the part 18 is short, its length can be equated with the length of the arc.
Thus, the total angle subtended by the part
18 in the center of plate 1 is given by:
workpiece length 18 # = radians
mean radius R of groove 9
= 11 + 12 + 13 radians Eq (2) R
If it is assumed that the part 18 rests in the groove 9 so that the normal N to the longitudinal axis 44 intersects this axis 44 at its midpoint M, the first scan line S1 and the last scan line SN determine each with this normal N an angle 0/2.
The scanning line SX intersects the part lS at two points and B and forms an angle with the normal N. This line SX detects an apparent diameter DAPP (= AB) of the part 18, this diameter being given by the relation:
DAPP = DTRUE Sec. .
. Eq (3) and having a midpoint MD at a distance RAPP from the center of the plate 1 given by
RAPP = R Sec Eq (4)
A person skilled in the art easily sees that the maximum divergence between DAPP (apparent diameter) and DTRUE (true diameter) and between RAPP and R is given by the following simplified equations:
:
EMI3.1
The apparatus described here is suitable for testing a part having a total length of 12.5 mm, so that according to equation (2)
0/2 # 1 radian
20 and according to equations (5) and (6), for a component with a length of 12.5 mm
DTRUE (S1) = DApp (Si). (i - 800
R (S1) = RAPP (S1) 8too)
It can therefore be seen that by moving the part under the row of diodes 34 along a circular path, the error reading the diameter of the part 18 is less than or equal to 0.125% (which can be neglected), and the axis longitudinal 44 is deformed according to a parabola. Thus, the row of diodes 34 sees part 18 as shown in FIG. 5.
In order to correct this deformation, it is accepted that the part 18 rests in the groove, so that the normal N to the longitudinal axis 44 and passing through the center of the turntable 1 intersects this axis 44 at its midpoint M and the parabolic correction factor can be applied to DATA information.
If, in reality, the part is indeed in the admitted position, the corrected information contains the true shape and the real dimensions of the shadow 30. However, if the part 18 presents an angle with respect to the position admitted above, and the same correction factor is applied, then the corrected information represents the shadow 30 of the part 18 as shown in FIG. 6, in which each segment41,4 ,,,, 243 is deformed into a parellelogram having dimensions as shown in the drawing. Likewise, if the object is longer or shorter than expected, then its true midpoint is not known until the entire object has been scanned. Either way, the correction is applied assuming the midpoint known.
If the estimate is wrong, the object will appear as a parallelogram. This information is in a form suitable for processing.
In addition, once the information has been corrected as described previously, the operation module calculates the lengths 11, 12, 13, the diameters dl, d2, d3, and the axis of the segments -, o of the part 18 according to the following procedure: (1) The information relating to each scan line is examined in turn.
If the information relating to a line indicates the presence of shadow 30 of room 18. then: a) or the width of shadow 30 exceeds a limit value
given for the width of a shadow 30 detected by the line
previous scan and another segment is defined, b) or the width of the shadow 30, does not differ from the limit value
given for the width of the shadow 30 detected by the
previous scan line, and the length of the same
segment is incremented.
In this way, the operation module divides the shadow 30
of the part 18 in a plurality of segment portions
as shown at 45 in fig. 7. These portions are much more
as numerous as segments 42, ¯Q of part 18 and
they take into account the chamfers at the
ends of part 18 and machining irregularities in
the width.
(2) The operation module PM combines the segment portions to define and size segments according to the process shown in the diagram illustrated in fig. 8. Each segment corresponds to one of segments 41,42,43 of part 18.
The apparatus is arranged in such a way as to examine a reference part TEST (MAX) having the maximum allowed dimensions and a reference part TEST (MIN) having the minimum dimensions allowed. It stores these limit values in response to instructions from the keypad K. These reference parts are arranged so as to pass opposite the row, the corresponding segments being in a matching orientation.
The production parts to be inspected are introduced into the groove2 (for example by sliding them along a slide not shown) and can be aligned with their corresponding segments in the same orientation or in an opposite orientation. The operational module defines and sizes the new segments of each part, checks each part to verify that it is straight and that the length and width parameters of each segment are well within the limits defined and memorized in this module. This module then sends instructions to the accepted / rejected circuit according to the result obtained. This circuit comprises, in a known manner and not shown, two air jets controlled so as to direct the part either towards an accepted channel or towards a rejected channel, depending on the result obtained.
The apparatus can be adapted to examine a part aligned, with respect to the row, at an angle other than 900. In addition, it can also be adapted to examine a part having a conical segment, truncated or not, of section. circular. Such a segment can be defined by its length and the radii of each end.
