The ball bearing for longitudinal displacements, also called ball bushings, has been known for several decades. We can discern a demand for two categories of these guidance modes.
Common bearings such as handling bushings for which an average precision is sufficient and precision bearings which are mainly used in machine tools, optics, electronics, measuring devices for which high guiding qualities are required.
High precision axial bearings are found on the market, but the main defect noticed in this category of bearings is the excessive external dimensions.
However, there is an axial and rotary bearing by alternating circulation paths on the working sectors. This bearing may have a small footprint, but its load capacity is low due to the fact that, in certain positions, only a few of the circulation paths are used; on the other hand, its manufacture is complicated and expensive.
In the presence of a limited space for the housings, a small center distance, a limitation of the moving mass, it is often preferred to mount the sliding bearing despite other resulting disadvantages. In addition, even large bearings often have a lack of guide rigidity due to the fact that the internal races are too short and their number too low. Often, the aforementioned defects are associated with an insufficient number of balls.
There are also bearings for longitudinal movements of the type with independent guide rails. The precision of the thickness of these rails often leaves much to be desired, the latter being formed by stamping. Another type of bearing consists of a casing of drawn and tempered sheet metal. Here too, the thickness precision of this envelope is insufficient; on the other hand, its hardness is too low for ball contacts.
In addition, these types of bearings have their accuracy depending entirely on the diameter of the housing.
In summary, these bearings are too large or of insufficient load capacity or of average precision and do not come within the context of the invention.
The aim of the present invention is, therefore, to provide an axial guide element which can replace existing devices while eliminating the aforementioned drawbacks and to allow its use in new cases.
The ball contact bearing on a shaft according to the invention comprising an outer sleeve of generally tubular shape, the balls being arranged in closed circulation paths formed in a cage of generally tubular shape located inside the sleeve, the sleeve having in its bore working sectors ensuring contact of the balls with the shaft and clearance sectors allowing the return circulation of the balls, is characterized in that the outer diameter of the sleeve has a value of at most 1.505 times the diameter of the shaft on which it operates for a shaft with a diameter of up to 16.5 millimeters, respectively not more than 1.405 times for a shaft with a diameter of 17 to 30.5 millimeters,
not more than 1.355 times for a tree with a diameter ranging from 31 to 40.5 millimeters and not more than 1.285 times for a tree with a diameter of 41 to 81 millimeters.
The bearing is thus a compact element combining good load capacity and high precision. In addition, its walk is smoother and quieter.
In the case where it is desired to obtain an exact reciprocal positioning of two bearings on a shaft independently of housings having an alignment error, the sleeve, in a variant, is rectified on its outer surface such that the contact surface adjustment in said housings is a short part of the total length of the element.
Indeed, for example, a slightly convex outer surface of the sleeve allows a certain inclination of the bearings in their housing, the latter being reciprocally aligned by the shaft; this also results in a better distribution of the load on the balls in operation.
The inner cage may include closed paths for the circulation of balls, the number of which is at least 6 for small models and is carried up to 12 for medium dimensions; the two rectilinear lines of these paths burst on both sides of the wall of the cage, therefore the balls remain in contact with the shaft on their return, it follows that in these rectilinear lines, the balls remain radially at a distance substantially constant of the center of the bearing, the clearance sectors in the sleeve are therefore of a shallow depth, the latter thus gains in rigidity and allows a lower section height, which, associated with more and significantly smaller balls, results in the low profile with heavy load specification.
In addition, the sleeve is in one piece and its working sectors can be machined by grinding and lapping with great precision, allowing fit qualities rarely achieved in compact components.
On the other hand, the sleeve may have at its ends internal parts in the form of a truncated cone facing the curves of the traffic paths. These curves may include ramps for ascent and descent of the balls formed in the cage so that the top of the balls is at a constant distance from the truncated cone portions of the sleeve over the entire course of the ramps. For the first embodiment, the closed version, the sleeve has a charging hole slightly larger than the diameter of a ball and arranged to allow mounting the loading of the last balls in the circulation paths, it also serves as an indexing device. of the cage into the sleeve. For the second embodiment, the open version, the balls are loaded into the circulation paths through the opening, by rotating the cage.
This version benefits substantially from the same qualities as the closed version. However, its fit on the shaft is regulated by the diameter of the housings.
The ball cage can be in one piece of steel, brass, aluminum or plastic. In order to save space in length and lengthen the rectilinear lines of the ball circulation paths and, therefore, the running surface of the working tracks, the curves of the circulation paths are, in certain cases, elliptical.
The drawings show, by way of example, the compact axial bearing according to the invention.
In the drawings:
fig. 1 shows a side view partially in section of a first embodiment of an axial bearing of small dimensions,
fig. 2 is a sectional front view of the embodiment of FIG. 1,
fig. 3 is a front sectional view of a second embodiment of a compact axial bearing,
fig. 4 is a cutaway view of one end of a variant of the embodiment of FIG. 1, the element comprising a rubber ring seal,
fig. 5 is a cutaway view of one end of a variant of the embodiment of FIG. 3, the element comprising a semi-circular cover,
fig. 6 is a schematic view of the variant, comprising an outer surface provided for self-alignment in the housings.
The main characteristic of the bearings described with reference to fig. 1 to 6 lies in the small footprint they present. For these bearings, the outer diameter of the sleeve, which corresponds to the maximum outer dimension of the bearing itself, has a value of at most 1.505 times the diameter of the shaft on which it operates for a shaft with a diameter of up to 16.5 mm, respectively at most 1.405 times for a shaft with a diameter ranging from 17 to 30.5 mm, at most 1.355 times for a shaft with a diameter ranging from 31 to 40, 5 mm and not more than 1.285 times for a shaft with a diameter ranging from 41 to 81 mm.
The first embodiment of the bearing shown in FIGS. 1, 2, 4 and 6 is an element for unlimited linear displacement on a shaft 2. This element is closed and must operate on an unsupported shaft along the travel stroke.
The element comprises a one-piece tubular sleeve 1 in hardened steel comprising in its bore working sectors 5 separated by clearance sectors 6. Sectors 5 and 6 are located on two different diameters, the difference in diameter corresponds approximately to 1 / 5 of the diameter of a ball 4. The group of sectors 5 located on the small diameter is ground and lapped according to a special process and ensures the contact of the balls in work. In contrast, the group of sectors 6 on the large diameter leaves a radial passage for the return circulation of the balls. The length of these sectors has a value of up to 0.80 times the total length of the element.
Every. At the end of the sleeve 1 there are parts in the form of a truncated cone of revolution 7 forming an angle of rise on the generatrix identical to the angle of rise of the curved parts 9 of the ball races 8 in a cage 3 described below. The cone parts 7 and the set of curves 9 of the paths 8 are positioned with precision with respect to the axis of the element. The sleeve 1 is terminated at each end by short cylindrical parts which can be used to position a dust seal, it also has a radial hole 11 with a diameter slightly greater than that of a ball which is used during assembly , to load the last balls of the tracks and, by means of a screw 12, to index the cage 3 in its place in the sleeve 1.
Between the sleeve 1 and a shaft 2 is mounted a one-piece tubular cage 3, which is responsible for forming the closed paths 8 for the circulation of balls 4. The paths 8 comprise two rectilinear and parallel parts along the generatrices of the cage 3 which burst the cage inside.
These two rectilinear parts, which have a length corresponding to the length of the working sectors 5 of the sleeve 1, are connected by a curve at each end. The two curves of the circuit form two up ramps and two down ramps and eliminate the contact of the balls 4 with the shaft 2. The two curves are made in such a way that the balls which traverse them, radially follow the cones of revolution 7 of the sleeve 1 at a distance corresponding to approximately 0.07 times their diameter. The total length of a closed circulation path is calculated in such a way that it corresponds to a multiple of the ball diameter while reserving a final build and operating clearance. For this calculation, the distance lost in a curve must be taken into account. The lateral play of the balls in the circulation paths is approximately 0.06 times the ball diameter.
The ball cage 3 has an internal diameter greater by a value of 1/75 relative to the diameter of the shaft 2.
Its outer diameter is adjusted to the diameter formed by the working sectors (5) of the sleeve 1 and is fixed by an indexing screw which engages in the load hole 11 of the sleeve 1. In a variant, an annular seal 18 rubber, retained in a recess 19 closes the end of the element (Fig. 4).
The second embodiment of the bearing shown in FIG. 3 is an element for unlimited linear displacement on a shaft 13 having one or more radial supports along the displacement stroke; therefore, the element has an opening at 600 14 which allows it to pass the semi-cylindrical parts of the shaft. Its manufacturing and operating characteristics are the same as for the first element of FIGS. 1 and 2, except the distribution of the working 15 and clearance 16 sectors which is irregular so that the direction of travel of the ball circuits is reversed and the load capacity with respect to the opening 14 can be distributed symmetrically . On the other hand, in this embodiment, the bearing has several indexings by screw 12 so as to reinforce the entire element.
In a variant according to the second embodiment (fig. 5), the ball cage is linked to the sleeve by covers 20 which are taken outside the sleeve in a groove 21 and hold the cage by a flange 22 against a rubber wire 23. The reciprocal polar positioning of the assembly is effected by a boss 24 in the cover 20 engaging with the housings 25. The assembly is possible by elasticity of the covers and the cage, the rubber wire is compressing, a clearance, in this case, being provided between the cage and the sleeve. The cover is metallic or plastic.
This variant offers appreciable solidity advantages, all the elements of the bearing forming a compact assembly.
As shown in fig. 1, 2 and 3, the rectilinear parts of the ball tracks 8 burst on both sides of the wall of the cage so that the balls 4 can be in contact with the shaft and the sleeve; the ramps of the curves 9 which eliminate the contact between the shaft and the balls, are used to conserve material to hold the central tongue 17 of the circulation paths 8 of the cage 3.
The cage 3 is mounted in the sleeve 1 such that a rectilinear part of the circulation paths is opposite the working sectors 5 of the sleeve, the balls located in this rectilinear part serve as contact between the sleeve 1 and the tree 2 by working sectors 5; in opposition, the balls located in the other part, are opposite the clearance sectors 6 of the sleeve 1 and are not loaded, it follows an endless circulation of the ball train of each path at a displacement speed half of that of the element on its shaft, the balls leave the working sectors and change direction from 1800 up and down the ramps of curves 9, then, after having circulated opposite the clearance sectors,
they change direction again from 1800 on the ramps of the opposite curve to return to contact with the work sectors; in curves 9, they roll on the cones of revolution 7 and behave as on a velodrome track.
Alignment of two bearings only by the shaft they are working with is possible by providing adequate surface grinding on the outer surface of the sleeve. A schematic example is shown in fig. 6 or a sleeve 25 on a shaft 26 in a housing 27 has its outer surface 28 formed of two trunks of opposite cones of revolution interconnected by a convex part of radius r on the theoretical generatrix of the element. The angle y of the cones on the generator is between 20 and 5.
The length of the bearing according to the invention can be different depending on the use. If two elements position a shaft, a length of approximately 1.25 times the outside diameter may be required. On the other hand, if only one element is used, it is often useful to have a guide of great length. This construction method allows element lengths which can be up to more than 2.5 times that of the outside diameter.
The elements which have just been described have the following advantages:
a) Circulation of the balls in a path where the clearance is
determined in such a way that the balls travel one
behind the other in a constant space whatever
the non-working place of the circuit, thus avoiding crowds
ments and the effects of hooking existing in most
bearings with circulation paths.
b) Arrangement of circulation paths in a space
geometric allowing space saving which results in
possibility of multiplying the number of paths, their length
heal, and, consequently, the number of contacts.
c) Return of the balls in the lower position, on the same floor
than the working position, therefore:
- small footprint, favorable external diameter by
relative to the diameter of the axis,
- high rigidity of the sleeve due to the absence of
deep clearances in the latter.
d) Long working range in relation to the total length
from the whole.
e) Monobloc ball cage allowing, thanks to a large
resistance, to obtain specifications b) and c).
f) Working areas honed using a special process.
guaranteeing a geometric precision which allows a
guidance of the bearing of the order of a micrometer; the finish of
surface allowing very smooth operation of the in
looks and better wear resistance.
g) Very precise external concentricity of the bearing by
relation to the tree.
h) In a variant, an alignment of the bearings by
relative to the shaft, regardless of the alignment of
housings, by an external fitting diameter bearing
only in the center of the element for a short part of
the length of the sleeve.
i) Robust design for the open variant with the
end covers, the latter holding the
appears compactly, the open versions suffuse
often frant of a fragile construction.
