B. Ber. dtsch. chem. Ges. 75 [1942], 460; J. Org. Chem.

The present invention relates to a new process for the preparation of cis-olefinically unsaturated compounds of the general formula
EMI1.1
in which R is hydrogen or methyl, which process is characterized in that a vinyl-cis-hexenyl-ketone of the formula
EMI1.2
with nitromethane or nitroethane in the presence of a base to form a nitro-cis-alkenone of the general formula
EMI1.3
and this is first converted into the nitronate by treatment with a base and the latter is then hydrolyzed to a compound of the general formula I by means of an acid.
The vinyl-cis-hexenyl-ketone II used as the starting material is a new compound that is produced by oxidation of the corresponding secondary alcohol, i.e. H. des Nona-l, cis-6-diene-3ol, can be prepared by methods known per se. Possible oxidizing agents are: chromium trioxide / sulfuric acid / water, chromium trioxide / pyridine, chromium trioxide / acetic acid, chromium trioxide / dimethylformamide; other chromium compounds, such as B. sodium chromate in the solvents mentioned, manganese dioxide in solvents such as hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ethers; Dimethyl sulfoxide / air, dimethyl sulfoxide / dicyclohexylcarbodiimide with acids, such as. B. phosphoric acid or trifluoroacetic acid. The preferred oxidizing agent is chromium trioxide / sulfuric acid / water.
The oxidation is advantageously carried out in a two-phase system, with solvents such as hydrocarbons (e.g. benzene, hexane), halogenated hydrocarbons (e.g. methylene chloride, chloroform), ethers (e.g.
Diethyl ether, diisopropyl ether) are used.
A particularly useful solvent is diethyl ether.
The molar quantitative ratio (calculated in oxidation equivalents) of nonadienol to oxidizing agent is expediently 1: 1.
The reaction temperatures are expediently between about 40 ° C. and +30 ° C., preferably between about 200 ° C. and +100 ° C., in order to prevent side reactions, in particular isomerization of the cis double bond in acidic reaction media.
When temperatures between about -5 and 200 ° C. are maintained, the reaction times are generally about 10-60 minutes.
The ketone II can according to methods known per se, for. B. by neutralization with a base, extraction with an organic solvent and optionally by fractional distillation.
The conversion of the ketone II to the nitro-cis-alkenone III can be carried out as follows:
Suitable bases are: alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alcoholates of primary, iren, secondary or tertiary alcohols, e.g. B. sodium methoxide or potassium tert-butoxide; primary, secondary or tertiary amines, such as. B.
Triethylamine, diethylamine, pyridine. The base can be used in excess, in an approximately equimolar amount, in less than the equimolar amount or only in a catalytic amount based on the ketone II. Catalytic amounts of sodium methoxide have proven particularly suitable. The reaction can be carried out with or without a solvent. Primary, secondary, tertiary alcohols (such as methanol, isopropanol or tert-butanol) are particularly suitable as solvents; primary, secondary and tertiary amines (such as diethylamine or triethylamine); aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons (such as hexane, benzene); Halogenated hydrocarbons (such as chloroform); Ether (such as diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran). Lower alkanols such as methanol or ethanol, in particular methanol, are preferably used.
The nitromethane or nitroethane can be used in excess or in an approximately equimolar amount, based on the ketone II. It is preferable to use a large one, such as B. an approximately 2- to 7-fold excess. The reaction is expediently carried out under reflux.
The reaction product III can be isolated by methods known per se by neutralization and extraction with organic solvents.
To convert the nitro-cis-alkenones m into the corresponding compounds I, the nitro compound III is first treated with a base, advantageously in excess, and thus converted into the corresponding salt (nitronate). Possible bases are: z. B. alkali and alkaline earth metal hydroxides, primary, secondary and tertiary alkali and alkaline earth metal alcoholates, as well as alkali and alkaline earth metal carbonates. Preferably, alkali hydroxides, such as. B. sodium hydroxide is used.
The salts formed (nitronates) are then hydrolysed by means of an acid such as a mineral acid, preferably sulfuric acid, to give the corresponding carbonyl compounds 1 [Nef reaction].
The solvents used are water, primary and secondary alcohols, such as. B. Ethanol and isopropanol mixed with water; Ether, such as B. ethylene glycol dimethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran mixed with water; Sulfoxides, such as dimethyl sulfoxide mixed with water, and formamides such as dimethylformamide mixed with water, are possible.
The reaction temperatures in the acid hydrolysis of the salts can range between room temperature and about 40.degree. Hydrolysis temperatures below about +5 C are particularly useful insofar as isomerization, in particular the cis-trans isomerization of the cis double bond, can be largely prevented. If, instead, one works at around room temperature, considerable isomerization occurs.
The reaction products are isolated using methods known per se: neutralization of the excess acid, extraction with an organic solvent. Pure products can be obtained by fractional distillation or chromatography.
The compounds of the formula I obtained can be converted in a known manner (cf., for example, Ber. Dtsch. Chem. Ges. 75 [1942], 460; J. Org. Chem. 38 [1973] 177) to the corresponding cis-pentenyl -cyclopentenones, namely to the known fragrance cis-jasmone, or to the likewise known 2-pent (cis-2en) -yl-cyclopent-2-en-one are cyclized. The latter compound is known to be an intermediate product for the fragrance methyl jasmonate.
If a compound of the formula I with R = methyl is used for the cyclization, the new compound of the formula is obtained as a by-product (approx. 3%)

In the following examples, the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example 1 a) 2-Nitro-cis-undec-8-en-5-one: 21.8 g (0.158 mol) of crude Nona-1, cis-6-dien-3-one were dissolved in 220 ml of abs. Dissolved methanol, added 59.3 g of nitroethane and 0.5 g of solid sodium methoxide. The mixture was then refluxed for 10 minutes under an argon atmosphere. The solvent was then almost completely removed, the residue was treated with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (approx. 150 ml) and extracted three times with 100 ml of ether each time. The organic phases were washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, combined, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated at 50 in a water-jet vacuum. This gave 34.18 g of thin layer chromatography (Rf = 0.65; silica gel 0.25 mm, Merck; solvent: methylene chloride) of uniform 2-nitro-cis-undec-8-en-5-one.

The nona-1, cis-6-dien-3-one of the formula II used as starting material was obtained as follows:
290 ml of ether were added to 28.8 g (0.206 mol) of nona-2, cis-6-dien-3-ol. The resulting solution was cooled to -15 to -20 "and slowly with stirring 51.4 ml (1.0 oxidation equivalent) 2.672N standard Jones reagent (267.2 g chromium trioxide, 230 ml conc. Sulfuric acid, with water) 1 liter diluted) so that the temperature in the reaction flask did not exceed -15 ". After the addition, stirring was continued for 35 minutes. It was then poured onto ice / saturated saline solution and extracted at 0 three times with 200 ml of ether each time.
The organic phases were then washed once with approx. 100 ml of saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, combined, dried over sodium sulfate, treated with 150 mg of hydroquinone and concentrated to a solution volume of approx. 300 ml at normal pressure.
The solution obtained in this way was subjected to post-oxidation by cooling it again to -15 to -20 "and slowly adding 17.2 mol (0.3 oxidation equivalent) of standard Jones reagent under the conditions already mentioned above. 35 minutes After the addition was complete, 4 ml of isopropanol were added in order to destroy the excess of oxidizing agent. Then working up as after the first oxidation, another 150 mg of hydroquinone were added and the solvent was distilled off at normal pressure, giving 22.0 g Non-1, cis-6-dien-3-one, uniform by thin-layer and gas chromatography.

Example 2 a) 1-Nitro-cis-dec-7-en-4-one: 63.0 g (0.456 mol) Nona-1, cis-6-dien-3-one were in 550 ml abs. Dissolved methanol, mixed with 126 g of nitromethane and 1.26 g of solid sodium methoxide. The mixture was then heated to 60 under an argon atmosphere and held at this temperature for 15 minutes. The solvent was then almost completely removed, the residue was treated with sodium bicarbonate solution and extracted three times with 300 ml of ether each time. The organic phases were washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, combined, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated at 50 in a water-jet vacuum. This gave 55.25 g by thin-layer chromatography (Rf = 0.75; silica gel 0.25 mm, Merck; solvent: methylene chloride) of uniform 1-nitro-cis-dec-7-en-4-one.
A column chromatographed (solvent: hexane / ether - 20/1; 10/1; 4/1) sample on silica gel (70 times the amount, Merck, 70-230 mesh) showed the following spectral data: IR spectrum (liq.):

b) cis-dec-7-en-4-on-1-al: 52 g (0.362 mol) of 1-nitro-cisdec-7-en-4-one were dissolved in 730 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 730 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide solution were added . Immediately thereafter, this two-phase mixture was slowly added dropwise, with thorough stirring, to 1700 ml of 10N sulfuric acid cooled to -5 to 10 so that the temperature never exceeded -5 ". Then it was extracted with 4 portions of hexane (approx. 300 ml each) at 0 and washed the organic phases through once with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, combined them, allowed to dry over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in a water jet vacuum at 40.
41.42 g of crude product were obtained, which was purified by column chromatography on 20 times the amount of silica gel (Merck, 7230 mesh; solvent: hexane / ether - 20/1; 9/1; 4/1). 27.5 g of a thin-layer and gas chromatographically uniform cis-Dec7-en-4-on-1-al were isolated, which showed the following spectral data: IR spectrum (liq.):

The dione obtained in this way could be cyclized to 2-pent- (cis2-en) -yl-cyclopent-2-en-one as follows:
13.5 g (0.08 mol) of cis-dec-7-en-4-on-1-al were dissolved in 70 ml of ether, 70 ml of 2N sodium hydroxide solution were added and the mixture was stirred under an inert gas for 20 hours at room temperature.
It was then extracted three times with 50 ml of pentane each time, washed neutral with saturated sodium chloride solution and the combined organic phases were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate.
The solvent was removed in a water jet vacuum and the oily crude product (12.08 g) was distilled over a Vigreux column. This gave a middle fraction of 2.86 g of 2-pent- (cis-2-en) -yl-cyclopent-2-en-one which was uniform by gas chromatography and which passed over at 57-58 / 0.035 Torr.
