Abstract

Des-A-9 beta-steroids, esp. of formula (I), are made by the hydrogenation of des-A-DELTA 9-steroids, esp. of formula (II) where R' is lower alkyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl, 3-oxobutyl, 3-chlorobut-2-enyl, 2-alkoxycarbonylethyl, 2-carboxyethyl, 2-cyanoethyl or isooxazolylmethyl of formula R3 and R4 are both lower alkyl or one is H and the other is lower alkyl; D is where R5 is hydroxy opt. etherified or esterified; R6 is H or lower alkyl; R7 is H or hydroxy; R8 is H, hydroxy or lower alkyl; and R9 is opt. esterified hydroxy.
