The present invention relates to a binding agent for molding sand or core sand, which is added to the sand prior to the production of the molds or the cores and thereby exhibits good binding of the sand and advantageous properties when exposed to heat caused by the molten metal.
Molding compounds for foundry purposes, which mainly consist of quartz sand, for example silver sand, are often bound with cement or water glass. It is known to use such molding compounds as additives such as natural or synthetic resins, clay sand, coal dust, waste products of wood digestion such as. B. to add sulphite waste liquors or cell pitch powder or molasses.
It is also known to first add bentonite and then carbon to the molding sand in the production of cement-free molding compounds. The function of the coal dust is to prevent the sand from burning on the cast piece during casting due to its gas formation and the coating of the quartz grains with coal and to create a smooth and clean cast surface. It also helps to compensate for the expansion of the sand and to avoid sand defects. The coal dust fulfills this function through its ability to form lustrous carbon at the casting temperatures in an amount of a maximum of about 12%. Furthermore, it provides a sufficient amount of buffer substances that allow sufficient sand expansion.
Since coal dust also has some serious disadvantages, was used as a bright carbon oiler z. B. proposed the use of polystyrene. Polystyrene has the advantage of converting up to 90% into shiny carbon under casting conditions and reducing the level of dust and toxic substances in the foundry Molding sand defects leads. A considerable amount of heat is also observed.
These disadvantages are overcome by the present invention. The binder according to the invention for molding sand or core sand is characterized in that it contains polyurethane in the form of a powder, coated with a water-oil emulsion, bentonite and wood flour.
The polyurethane contained in the binder according to the invention is coated with a small amount of a water-oil emulsion which has the ability to bind foreign dust (quartz dust, bentonite) and is also a very good lustrous carbon former. The proportion of the coating material is about 0.005% and is preferably an emulsion of a vegetable oil in water. The polyurethane used is preferably a product provided with a flame retardant, with a grain size of about 0.08 to 0.15 mm.
The proportions of the individual components, which can be varied within wide ranges according to the intended use, are approximately in the following ranges:% from to preferred
Amount% polyurethane (wrapped) 10 90 75 bentonite 5 60 20 wood flour 1 10 5
The highly swellable bentonite contained in the binder according to the invention preferably has a content of at least 75% montmorillonite. The montmorillonite is a silicate with a band structure, which is generally characterized by the
Formula [Al2 (OH) 2] [SOio] is illustrated. Due to the high montmorillonite content, the strong swelling capacity of bentonite, which up to the
Can absorb six times its volume in water, ge guaranteed. Due to the bentonite content of the binder, the
The malleability of the molding sand is guaranteed.
A hardwood flour with a grain size of 0.08 to 0.15 mm is particularly suitable as wood flour.
In the preparation of the binder according to the invention, the mixture is expediently mixed carefully and intensively with suitable devices, the coating agent being sprayed on.
It has been shown that dry mixing results in a much better distribution of the components in the mixture and then also in the sand. It is also possible to initially only add part of the total bentonite required, the remainder to be added later if necessary. In addition, the use of a largely ready-mixed binder for the foundry means considerable labor savings and allows for reduced stocks.
The binder according to the invention also guarantees, in addition to the greatest efficiency when preparing the molding sand in the foundry, the greatest possible environmental protection, since dust formation and the generation of harmful exhaust gases are avoided. Another additional advantage is its practical incombustibility when using a polyurethane containing a flame retardant, so that the mixture can be stored without any problems without the risk of a heat explosion or self-ignition.
