It is known to decorate ceramic materials by the screen printing process, the decor being printed on the fired glaze and then fired.
For this purpose e.g. in the manufacture of wall panels, the biscuit firing, the smooth firing and the decorative firing are required.
In the so-called single-firing process, there is no need for biscuit firing. however, the decor firing is necessary for printed tiles.
Efforts have been going on for a long time to circumvent the very expensive decor firing by decorating the unfired glaze using the screen printing process, with decals or the like, and thus burning in the decor in the smooth firing.
The strength of the unfired glazes is not sufficient for decoration by the screen printing process, with decals or the like. They must therefore be solidified with the aid of fixing agents or binders to such an extent that they withstand the process of decorating them.
In fine ceramics, e.g. where a lot is decorated with decals, water-soluble binders such as alginates, carboxymethyl celluloses are used. Dextrin, hydroxyethyl celluloses, methyl celluloses, polyvinyl alcohol, tragacanth, sugar and similar substances are used. These products are either added to the glaze slip and applied together with it. or they are applied as a solution to the already applied glaze.
Attempts have also been made to use dispersions of plastics, e.g. Polyvinyl acetate to be used for this purpose. But that failed because the glazes coagulate when mixed with these plastics. A synthetic resin dispersion then applied to the unfired glaze results in a film of sufficient strength when it is fixed, but only forms a small bond with the glaze, is easy to peel off and also clogs the screen after a short time when decorating using the screen printing process.
The same applies to separately applied dispersions or solutions of plastics in non-aqueous solvents, the latter additionally having unpleasant secondary properties. There was therefore a need to find a fixing agent and / or binding agent which enables the perfect decoration of unfired glazes, engobes and enamels - in particular using the screen printing process - and a flowing, uncomplicated production.
It has now been found, surprisingly, that the deficiencies outlined are avoided and that decorating with glazes is flawless. Enamels and engobes in the unfired state is made possible if a means for fixing and / or binding these unfired glazes, enamels or engobes is used according to the present invention.
This agent is characterized in that it contains water-dispersible plastics and one or more water-soluble binders.
Homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl compounds can be used as water-dispersible plastics. such as. Vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, methacrylamide, esters of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acid, e.g. Methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl esters, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, butadiene styrene, vinyl propionate, butadiene, ethylene, styrene, maleic acid esters and unsaturated carboxylic acid esters.
Products such as polyvinyl alcohol can be used as water-soluble binders within the combination according to the invention. Polyacrylic compounds, cellulose ethers, e.g. Carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, and hydroxyethyl cellulose, polysaccharides such as e.g. Tragacanth, sugar derivatives, starch and dextrin, alginates, casein and lignosulfonates can be used alone or in combination with one another.
To produce an agent according to the invention, the abovementioned components can be dispersed separately in water, optionally with the aid of dispersants, or dissolved in water and then mixed with one another. The quantitative ratio of the dispersible plastics to the water-soluble component can be between 100: 1 and 1: 1, mainly between 10: 1 and 2: 1, depending on the combination of substances present.
The dispersions produced in this way can also contain dispersants to regulate the viscosity, as well as plasticizers, preservatives and antifoams.
In addition, it is desirable to keep the pH of the dispersions constant over a relatively long period of time so that they do not suffer a drop in viscosity which would lead to separation. The pH values required depending on the components used are generally in the range of pH 4 - 10, preferably pH 5 - 7. To adjust the pH, known buffer salts, such as alkali or ammonium phasphates, also ammonia, etc. can be used. serve.
The finished dispersions can also be brought into the form of powders which are redispersible in water by removing water. The water content of the liquid dispersion is usually in the range from approx. 50 to 70%. Dispersions or powders can be brought to the application concentration by diluting with water. In the case of liquid dispersions, this is preferably done in a ratio of 1: 5 to 1:10 for application using the centrifugal method or using a spray gun on the unfired glaze or in a ratio of 1:15 to 1:50 for application using the waterfall method or the immersion method.
In general, drying takes place very quickly in a normal atmosphere, but can be accelerated by a subsequent artificial drying.
The agents described can, be it in liquid or powder form, be used for a separate fixation treatment following the application of the glaze, engobe or enamel coating; however, they can also be mixed with the glaze, engobe or enamel slip and applied together with it. The glaze obtained in this case is of excellent strength and can be perfectly printed.
The film layer obtained by subsequent application to the unfired glaze, engobe or enamel is very thin and uniform and is characterized by a solid, non-sticky surface. A particular advantage of this film layer is its excellent, firm connection or matting with the underlying unfired glaze. With the previously usual means, the glaze only has a poor connection with the film layer; the latter is rather lifted off during printing in many cases, damages the decor and clogs the screen printing fabric.
The film obtainable with the agent according to the invention is flexible and elastic. It dries very quickly in the atmosphere, so that a special drying treatment can be dispensed with. As a result of the flexibility, there is no tension during drying, and the film does not stand out from the glaze. Because of the advantageously short drying time, it is now also possible to machine-print the objects treated with the fixing agent. The film is not lifted off the screen printing stencils and does not clog them. The use of the fixing and / or binding agents according to the invention enables fast, productive and error-free decorating.
For example
An aqueous dispersion contains 31% polyvinyl acetate and 5% dibutyl phthalate as a plasticizer and 6% dissolved polyvinyl alcohol. The water content is 58%. The dispersion is adjusted to a pH of approx. 7 with sodium hexametaphosphate and a preservative is added.
The dispersion is diluted in a ratio of 1:30 with water to the application concentration and applied to freshly glazed wall panels on a conveyor belt using the waterfall method. A fine film is created on the glaze, which enables printing using the screen printing process less than 60 seconds after application. The film has a good connection with the glaze. Cleaning of the screen mesh is also not necessary when printing several thousand plates afterwards.
Example 2
An aqueous dispersion contains 35% dispersed polyvinyl acetate, 5% dissolved polyvinyl alcohol, 0.2% antifoam and 59.8% water. It is diluted 1: 8 with water to the application concentration and applied to the unfired glaze using a spray gun. The result is a film that adheres well to the glaze and enables the glaze to be printed on after less than 60 seconds.
Example 3
An aqueous dispersion contains 32% copolymer of vinyl acetate-ethylene dispersed, 4% dissolved hydroxyethyl cellulose, also 0.2% silicone antifoam emulsion, 0.1% preservative and 63.7% water. It is diluted 1: 6 with water and applied to the unfired glaze using a spray gun. The result is a fine film with a good bond to the glaze, which enables perfect decoration with decals.
Example 4
A dispersion consisting of 38% dispersed copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, 4% dissolved sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, 0.2% antifoam agent, 0.2% preservative and 57.6% water, is mixed with 1.5% of a glaze slurry. The applied glaze has excellent strength and can be easily processed and printed.
Example 5
A dispersion of 30% of a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, 5% dibutyl phthalate, 5% polyvinyl alcohol, 0.2% antifoam and 59.8% water is diluted 1: 7 with water and applied to the unfired glaze using a spray gun. After less than 60 seconds, the screen printing process can be used to decorate without any problems.
