The invention relates to a ballast for mains-operated electrostatic paint spraying systems.
For electrostatic spraying of so-called metallic paints, which contain aluminum pigment. Known electrostatic paint spraying systems are only suitable if the paints contain no more than 24% aluminum pigment and, when using a special aluminum pigment, no more than 6% of the same. Otherwise the metallic lacquer forms a continuous conductor under the effect of the applied high voltage due to the polarization of the aluminum particles, which short-circuits the high voltage, so that the metal particles are no longer electrically positive or positive.
can be charged negatively and the device is shut down.
The object of the present invention is to create a ballast which can be connected upstream of known, commercially available electrostatic paint spraying systems and with the help of which it is possible to process metallic paints in the paint spraying system which contain a higher proportion of metal pigment than previously permitted.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that it comprises an ohmic resistor connected upstream of the voltage supply connection of the paint spraying system, which is in series with the power supply of the paint spraying system with respect to the network.
This measure makes it possible to spray metallic paints electrostatically with known and commercially available paint spraying systems, the metal pigment content of which can be up to 50%, without the high voltage in the paint spraying system collapsing.
In the following an embodiment of the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawing.
The figure shows the circuit diagram of the ballast described.
According to the figure, an electrostatic paint spraying system 1 is connected via a ballast 2 to phase P and neutral conductor N of an alternating voltage network.
The ballast 2 contains an ohmic resistor 3, for example arranged in phase. This can preferably be designed as a variable resistor, as indicated in the figure. To secure the device from breakdowns, a fine fuse 4 can also be provided.
The ohmic resistance is in series with the voltage supply of the electrostatic paint spraying system 1 with respect to the network.
It has proven to be particularly advantageous to dimension the ohmic resistance 3 in such a way that the voltage occurring at the input of the electrostatic paint spraying system 1 is reduced to approximately half the voltage for which the device was originally designed. With a mains voltage of 220 volts, in a preferred example, the input voltage for the paint spraying system was reduced to about 110 volts. Potentiometers of 3200, 4500 or 7500 ohms were used. The current flowing through the ohmic resistor 3 was about 0.1 amperes in the example
The fact that a regulating transformer connected upstream of the paint spraying system instead of the ballast 2 did not produce the same effect, leads to the assumption that the ohmic resistance results in a more favorable phase position of the high voltage occurring in the paint spraying device.
This could make it possible for the metal pigment particles to be isolated in the dielectric of the paint when the high voltage is reduced. whereby a breakdown and breakdown of the high voltage is avoided.
