We know that a pocket calculator requires a thin and waterproof keyboard. There are thin keyboards for calculators of this kind. These keyboards have the disadvantage of not having a click and of being quite rigid. In the case where existing keyboards have this click, their assembly comprises a large number of parts and the drawback lies in the fact that these keyboards are controlled by conventional keys, which increase the size and thickness of the keyboard. calculator and therefore go against the aim of making it small enough to fit in a pocket.
The present invention aims to overcome these drawbacks and relates to a keyboard for a pocket electronic calculator. This keyboard is characterized by the fact that it comprises at the top a sheet with molded flexible keys, the sheet covering a network of snap contacts, the network being supported by an insulating wedge, itself placed above the keyboard. a printed circuit forming the lower part of the keyboard, the circuit being connected to the electronic device of the calculator, said network of contacts comprising curved tabs intended to produce a click under the effect of sufficient pressure from the user's finger,
said insulating wedge supporting the curved tabs and having sufficient thickness to ensure contact between the tabs and the printed circuit after crossing a critical point by the curved tabs, the network tabs being actuated by the flexible keys of said sheet, the latter comprising a support formed by a fabric frame carrying on its upper face the marks of the keyboard and the flexible keys, the lower face of said frame being provided with pushers actuating the contact tongues and with reinforcing plates. said plates comprising a set of retaining lugs passing through the constituent parts of the keyboard in order to assemble them.
The appended drawing represents an embodiment of the keyboard which is the subject of the invention, given by way of example.
Figs. I to 3 represent the entire keyboard, fig. 1 being a sectional elevation view taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 2, fig. 2, a plan view of FIG. 1 and fig. 3 an exploded perspective view.
Fig. 4, on a larger scale, is a sectional elevation view of a keyboard key.
Figs. 5 and 6, on a smaller scale than that of FIG. 4, show a contact tab, FIG. 5 being a sectional elevation view taken along line V-V of FIG. 6, and fig. 6, a plan view of FIG. 5.
Figs. 7 to 9 show three positions of a network contact tab, FIG. 7 in the rest position, FIG. 8, before the position of the critical point under the effect of a first pressure from the user, and FIG. 9, the contact position under the effect of a second pressure from the user.
Fig. 10 is a diagram of the operation of the tongue shown in FIGS. 7 to 9.
Fig. It is a perspective view of a contact tab.
Fig. 12 is an electrical diagram of the keyboard.
The keyboard, in the embodiment shown, comprises a printed circuit I (fig. I and 3) suitably etched and drilled to receive lugs 2 for retaining the constituent parts of the keyboard. This circuit I is covered with an insulating wedge 3, the thickness of which depends on the vertical displacement of a contact tab 4. This wedge 3 is pierced with holes 5 corresponding to the distribution of the keys of the keyboard, and with holes 6 traversed by the lugs 2. These holes 6 are found in the printed circuit 1 and in the network 7 (fig. 3) of the contact tabs. This network 7 is placed on the wedge 3; it is formed from a single piece; for example by a beryllium bronze sheet, this material being provided with the desired elasticity after quenching.
The network 7 is covered with a gilding prior to quenching to protect its surface against corrosion due to the heat treatment, said gilding ensuring good electrical contact when the tabs 4 are in operation.
After quenching, each contact tab 4 of network 7 is bent, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 11, to give it the desired click during operation. The camber of the tabs is obtained by means of a suitable device.
Each of the contact tabs 4 of the network 7 (Fig. 6) is attached to a frame, the four corners of which are provided with holes 6 (Fig. 3) to allow the fixing lugs 2 to pass through all the parts of the keyboard. The electrical connection of the network 7 to the printed circuit I is made by means of a pad 8 (fig. 3). The frames and the tabs constituting a network of contacts are chemically machined, for example with iron perchloride, instead of being stamped, to avoid burrs.
Certain electronic diagrams involving contacts or groups of contacts which are electrically distinct from each other, it is possible to proceed with the splitting of the contact network as required. In these cases, the machining of the network of contact tabs would be carried out as a single block at the start of operations and, by a simple stamping on final assembly, the contact areas would be isolated. The connection of these contact zones would be carried out by means of a wedge in two parts, one of which would be formed of a double-sided printed circuit and of small thickness making it possible to solder the zones so as to guarantee their immobilization and to perform their connections to the electronic device of the calculator. The second part of the wedge would isolate the zone connections from the printed circuit 1 (fig. 3).
The thickness of this two-part shim should be equal to that of the insulating shim 3.
The assembly described is covered in a sealed manner by a sheet 9 of molded keys 10, this sheet being produced as follows: on a sheet 1 1 of white or colored textile, properly stretched, is deposited or printed marks 12, by example of numbers, letters or signs, in a distribution taking into account the use and distribution of the keys 10 of the keyboard. The textile sheet 11 is incorporated into a coating of flexible and transparent material, to form the web 9 of the molded keys 10.
This coating is carried out in a mold comprising three parts, the upper part of which is intended for the molding of the keys 10, the intermediate part, for the shaping of the pushers 13 and the membranes 14 with each key is provided as well as the reinforcement plates 15 of the ply 9 and the lower part forming with the intermediate part the retaining lugs 2, which are attached by molding to the reinforcing plates 15.
The operation of the keyboard described is as follows: each contact tab 4 (fig. 3 and 6) is arranged transversely with respect to the hole 5 drilled in the insulating wedge 3. This wedge electrically isolates the network 7 with respect to the conductors 16 of the circuit. printed 1. Under each contact tab 4 of the network 7 is arranged a conductive pad 17 (fig. 3 and 4) printed on the circuit. said patch being connected to the electronic device of the calculator by means of conductors 16 (FIGS. 2 to 4). In the rest position, a slight clearance separates the tongue 4 from the pad 17.
When the operator presses lightly by means of a button 10 on the middle of the curved tongue 4, a deformation occurs first in the direction A-A '(fig. 11). If the contact force continues to increase, the tongue deforms in the direction B-B 'after passing a critical point C (fig. 10). Depending on the thickness of the insulating wedge 3, there is a click accompanied by a sudden contact between the tongue 4 and the pad 17.
Figs. 7 to 1 1 show the successive phases of operation of the tongue 4. In FIG. 7, the force is zero, the tongue 4 being in its rest position. In fig. 8, the force is localized below the critical point C (fig. 10). In the following phase (fig. 9), the force makes it possible to cross the critical point C. At this moment, there is a click that the operator feels clearly at the end of his finger and contact is established. When the force disappears, the arched tongue 4 returns to its initial position by moving in the opposite direction.
The thickness of the curved tongue combined with its length and the distance between the two supports in relation to the diameter of the hole 5 drilled in the wedge 3 determine, together with the radius of curvature, the force necessary to actuate the contact and the duration operation of said contact.
The thickness of the insulating wedge 3 is related to the moment of contact over time, said contact occurring after passing the critical point C.
On the other hand, the radius of curvature given to the pusher 13 of the button 10 determines the duration of correct operation of a cambered contact while taking care to avoid an exaggerated pressure on the two supports formed by the opening 5. of wedge 3 does not deform the camber, regardless of the force exerted on button 10.
It should be noted that since no part is glued or riveted, the replacement of a contact network does not present any difficulty.
The keyboard described has the following advantages in particular: the small number of component parts facilitates the assembly of the keyboard. The click on each key allows the operator a great safety of use. As the keyboard is waterproof, it is not necessary to cover it with a protective cover against dust and liquid projections. As the numbers, letters and signs are printed on the frame fabric, changes in the presentation and distribution of the inscriptions are carried out without difficulty. Finally,
The use of silicone resin to cover the indications allows effective protection against deterioration, said resins resistant to temperature as well as to aging and to corrosive agents.
