Lichtsteuerzelle

Light control cell
The invention relates to a light control cell with an optical which can be controlled by an electric or magnetic field
Rotational ability, consisting of a liquid crystal arranged between two plates and the use of such a cell as an element of a page write matrix for writing in a hologram memory.
Optical devices are known which utilize the Dynamic Scattering (D.S.) effect (e.g. British Patent No. 1,167,486). These devices are essentially a capacitor with transparent plates, the dielectric of which is formed by a nematic substance. An electric current flows through this capacitor, the moving charge carriers of which create turbulence in the nematic substance. Since nematic substances are optically anisotropic, light incident on the liquid crystal is scattered by the turbulence through the transparent capacitor plates. This changes the transparency or the reflection of the cell.
Light control cells that use the dynamic scattering effect cannot be used wherever high demands are placed on the optical homogeneity of the cells, because the fluid turbulence is a problem in such cases. Another disadvantage is that the scattering process loses coherence and polarization of the incident light, so that e.g. Laser light cannot be modulated with a D.S. cell without destroying these properties. In addition, for many applications in which small dimensions of the power supply parts are important, e.g. in battery operation, the relatively high threshold voltage of approx. 6 volts and the likewise relatively high voltage of approx. 20 volts, at which the light scattering reaches saturation, are disadvantageous.
Finally, the lifetime is likely to be significantly influenced by the ion transport through the nematic substance (the higher the current through the cell, the shorter its lifetime).
The purpose of the invention is to eliminate the drawbacks mentioned. The invention is therefore based on the object of specifying a light control cell which is optically homogeneous and which maintains the coherence and polarization of the incident light.
According to the invention, this is achieved by a light control cell of the type described above, in which at least one of the plates is translucent, the liquid crystal has a helically twisted molecular arrangement in relation to the direction perpendicular to the plates and the plates have the structure of their surfaces facing the liquid crystal exert a directional force on the molecules of the same in order to orient the molecular dipoles parallel to the surface in a certain direction.
To control the rotation of the plane of polarization, an electric or magnetic field can be generated in the liquid crystal perpendicular to the plates.
In the following, the wall orientation of the plates denotes a certain surface quality that affects the molecules adjacent to the plate, i.e. exerts a straightening force on the boundary layer of the liquid crystal. The molecules in the boundary layer are parallel to the wall orientation.
The wall orientation is known to be achieved, for example, by rubbing the surface of the plate with a cotton swab or swab.
The liquid crystal consists of a nematic compound, for example. Nematic liquid crystals have a parallel structure, i. In the unaffected state, their molecules are essentially oriented parallel in a preferred direction.
If there is a nematic liquid crystal between two plates with the same wall orientation, the crystal structure assumes a preferred direction parallel to the wall orientation. If the two plates are now rotated against each other, the boundary layers adhere to the plate surfaces. The nematic molecules are oriented between the boundary layers in such a way that there is a continuous transition from one direction of wall orientation to the other.
If one considers the orientation of the nematic molecules along any normal perpendicular to the plates, a helically twisted arrangement results.
A screw structure of this type can also be achieved in that a small amount of cholesteric crystalline liquid or other optically active substance is added to the nematic liquid crystal. Cholesteric liquid crystals already have a screw structure in the unaffected state. By adding them to a nematic liquid crystal, the screw structure is induced in it, so to speak. The screw structure is fixed to the plate surfaces by the wall orientation or the adhesion caused by it.
A liquid crystal with a helical structure is optically active, i. the direction of polarization of continuous linearly polarized light follows the helical winding of the crystal structure.
This optical activity can be controlled by an electric or magnetic field. If a sufficiently strong field in the direction of the screw axis (i.e.
perpendicular to the plates), with the exception of the adhesive boundary layer, the molecules align themselves parallel to the field. This destroys the screw structure and the optical activity disappears. After switching off the field, the previously existing structure is restored.
Further details of exemplary embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the description made below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Show it
1 shows a model of a liquid crystal with a helical structure,
2 shows an electro-optical device with continuously controllable transmission,
3 shows a graphic representation of the transmission of a cell according to the invention as a function of the voltage applied to the plates and
FIG. 4 shows a graphic representation of the angle of rotation of the device shown in FIG. 2 as a function of the applied voltage.
In Fig. 1, the orientations of various layers of a liquid crystal with a helical structure are shown schematically. The existing screw structure can either be caused by the wall orientation of two plates (not shown) between which the liquid crystal lies, or induced by the admixture of cholesteric compounds. The boundary layer 1 is oriented in the y direction, while the boundary layer 2 has an orientation in the z direction. In any plane 3 lying between the boundary layers, there is an orientation in the direction of an angle lying between the y- and the z-direction, the angle depending on the distance from the boundary layers.
The electro-optical device shown in FIG. 2 for the continuous control of the transmission consists of an electro-optical cell 11 which is arranged between a polarizer 12 and an analyzer 13 parallel thereto. The
Cell 11 has the shape of a plate capacitor and is constructed from two plates or electrodes 14, 15 arranged plane-parallel at a distance and a dielectric 16 lying in between.
The dielectric 16 consists of a nematic liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy (i.e. the dielectric constant along the longitudinal axis of the molecules is greater than the dielectric constant in the direction e1> E perpendicular thereto
The two electrodes 14, 15 consist of glass plates; their surfaces facing the liquid crystal are coated with SnO. The SnO2 surfaces are treated in such a way that the molecules of the liquid crystal in the boundary layer are oriented with their longitudinal axes parallel to the electrode surface in a preferred direction.
In the assembled cell 11, the preferred directions of the two electrodes 14, 15 are rotated against each other.
The molecules of the liquid crystal align themselves in the boundary layers according to the preferred directions of the electrodes. In between, the nematic molecules are oriented in such a way that there is a continuous transition from the preferred direction in the
Boundary layer at the electrode 14 to the preferred direction in the boundary layer at the electrode 15 results. If one looks at the orientation of the molecules of the liquid crystal along any normal perpendicular to the electrodes, a helically twisted arrangement results.
It has been shown that the polarization direction of light incident through the electrode 14 and linearly polarized parallel to its preferred direction follows the orientation of the nematic molecules and, when the light leaves the cell 11 through the other electrode 15, with the latter
Preferred direction coincides. If the preferred directions of the two electrodes 14 and 15 are rotated by 90 relative to one another (crossed wall orientation), the polarization direction of the incident light is rotated by 900.
The cell 11 lies between the polarizer 12 and the analyzer 13 in such a way that the preferred direction of the electrode 14 adjacent to the polarizer 12 is in relation to the polarization direction of the
Polarizer 12 is parallel. When the wall orientation is crossed in the cell 11, the preferred direction of the electrode 15 is therefore perpendicular to the polarization direction of the analyzer 13. Incident from a light source 17 through the polarizer 12
Light is thus polarized in the direction of the Z coordinate shown, enters the liquid crystal 16 through the electrode 14 and is continuous on the way through it up to y
Rotated in the direction, leaves the cell 11 through the electrode 15 and is not allowed through by the analyzer 15 oriented in the z-direction. An observer 18 thus sees no light from the light source 17.
If, on the other hand, the analyzer 18 is rotated 90 ° with respect to the polarizer 12, the light from the light source 17 reaches the observer 18.
If a voltage is now applied to electrodes 14 and 15, i. H. If an electric field perpendicular to the electrodes is generated in the liquid crystal, a torque acts on the nematic molecules because of E "> EA, which tends to set the longitudinal axes of the molecules in the direction of the field. With increasing voltage at the electrodes approaches the orientation more and more in the direction of the field vector until it is practically parallel to the field vector at a sufficiently high voltage. At the same time, the screw structure and thus the optical activity of the liquid crystal almost completely disappears. Polarized light incident through the electrode 14 leaves the cell 11 with it unchanged polarization direction.
After switching off the voltage, the
Wall orientation restored the screw structure of the liquid crystal.
If a voltage is applied to the electrodes of the device of FIG. 1 described above, in which the polarization directions of polarizer 12 and analyzer 13 are parallel, then the polarized light is partially or completely transmitted to observer 18, depending on the magnitude of the voltage. In the case in which the polarizer and analyzer are crossed, a sufficiently high voltage has the effect that no more light from the light source 17 reaches the observer 18.
3 shows the transmission of the device described, in which the polarization directions of the polarizer and analyzer are parallel, as a function of the voltage applied to the electrodes. It can be seen that the transmission without voltage is approximately 0. As the voltage increases, it initially remains approximately at this level until a threshold voltage due to polarization phenomena is reached. Above this threshold voltage, the transmission shows a continuous increase and finally reaches a kind of saturation.
The control of the optical activity can be carried out with alternating voltage in addition to direct voltage. Depending on the application, one of the two operating modes is preferable. In order to avoid polarization phenomena, the threshold voltage is particularly low when operating with alternating voltage. The curve of FIG. 2 is frequency-independent up to about 80 kHz.
In the device described, N (4-ethoxybenzylidene) -4-aminobenzonitrile (PEBAB) was used as the liquid crystal. It is evident that any other nematic substance with positive anisotropy, i.e. H. with E ,,> E l can be used with essentially the same result. The electrode areas of the cell described are about 4 cm2. The liquid crystal has a thickness of 10-100 Il.
The following results obtained with the device described clearly show the superiority of a cell according to the invention over a corresponding electro-optical cell which is based on the effect of dynamic scattering.
The polarization of the incident light remains practically unchanged, so that cells according to the invention can e.g. also suitable for modulating laser light. The threshold voltage for the occurrence of the electro-optical effect is approx. 1 V for alternating voltage and approx.
2.5 V, the saturation voltage for direct and alternating voltage approx. 4 V. The power consumption is considerably lower with direct voltage operation than with D.S. cells. Finally, the service life is very long because of the low transport of charge carriers.
Various advantageous effects can be achieved by a large number of possible modifications. For example, when using a colored or colored liquid crystal in the cell 11 together with two polarizers, a device can be produced which is impermeable to light without voltage and only allows one color to pass through when voltage is applied. The reverse process can also be implemented. In the transition area, you get between shades between black and the chosen color.
The cell 11 can also be operated in reflection. For this purpose the analyzer 13 arranged behind the cell (e.g. in the form of a film) is glued onto a conventional mirror. The incident light is either reflected or absorbed by this mirror, depending on whether there is voltage on the cell or not.
Due to its properties, the inventive
Cell suitable for a wide range of applications. One on the
The property of the application based on maintaining coherence consists in the use of the cell as an element of a page input matrix for writing in a hologram memory. As is known, such a matrix consists of a large number (e.g. 104) of elements which, depending on the control, block or let through coherent light and thus serve to write a bit into the memory. In particular, an arrangement is possible that allows addressing. For this purpose, the liquid crystal is placed between two plates, the conductive coating of which is divided into a number of mutually isolated strips in such a way that the strip directions of the two plates are perpendicular to each other.
A voltage can be applied to the strips by means of suitable connections, whereby the addressing of individual segments is possible.
In addition to this special application, the cells are generally suitable for modulating the light intensity, the low control voltages being particularly advantageous.
Since, in contrast to D.S. cells, the light beam can be extinguished, it is possible to manufacture electro-optical shutters. The electronic control and modulation of the direction of the polarization plane of linearly polarized light (e.g. in polarimetry) can also be implemented. Further areas of application are television technology and data processing (recording of optical and electrical signals).
Another possibility is the manufacture of spectacle lenses, the absorption of which is controlled by the intensity of the incident light.
