Abstract

alpha-Glucosamine base is prepd. by reaction of glucosamine hydrochloride with a tertiary base (pref. triethylamine) in water at 10-20 degrees C for not longer than 30 mins. followed by precipitation of the base by addition of methanol and its separation from the liquid phase and washing with methanol. The pure base may be used to produce the therapeutically active sulphate and hydriodide.
