Ausserdem arbeitet man üblicherweise in Gegenwart eines inerten organischen Lösungsmittels, wie z. B. Dimethylformamid, Dimethyl- sulfoxid, Kohlenwasserstoffen wie Benzol und Toluol, chlorierten Kohlenwasserstoffen wie Chloroform und Alkanolen, wie Methanol, Aethanol u. dgl.
Die Herstellung von Verbindungen der Formel Il und deren Tautomeren wird beispielsweise in dem folgenden Reaktionsschema veranschaulicht, worin auch die tautomeren Mischungen mitberücksichtigt sind.

Verbindungen der Formel III werden in Verbindun gen der Formel II und deren Tautomere mit einem Reduktionsmittel wie Natriumborhydrid, Wasserstoff in Gegenwart von Raney-Nickel, Zink in Aethanol u. dgl, übergeführt. Die Reaktion wird üblicherweise bei Raum temperatur oder darüber, vorzugsweise bei einer Tempe ratur zwischen 20 C und 100 C durchgeführt. Ausser- dem arbeitet man üblicherweise in Gegenwart eines inerten organischen Lösungsmittels, wie z.
B. Dimethyl- formamid, Kohlenwasserstoffen wie Benzol, Toluol, Alkanolen wie Methanol, Aethanol u. dgl.
Das Hydroxylproton einer Verbindung der Formel 11a kann einer Protonenwanderung unterliegen, wobei die entsprechende isomere Verbindung der Formel Il entsteht. In Lösung ist das erhaltene Produkt nach der Reduktion einer Verbindung der Formel III üblicher weise eine Mischung der tautmeren Formeln II und Ha. Die relative Menge der isomeren Formen ist abhängig von Faktoren wie dem Lösungsmittelsystem, dem pH des Mediums und dem speziellen Produkt, d. h. der Bedeutung von R1, R:" R3, R4, R5 und R6 in den Formeln II und Ha.
Verbindungen der Formeln III und IIIa können z. B. durch Oxidation eines 1-Phenyl-2-amino-alkyli- soindolinderivates wie folgt hergestellt werden:

Die Oxidation kann mit einem Oxidationsmittel wie gasförmigem Sauerstoff oder chemischen Oxidantien wie Chromtrioxid in Essigsäure u. dgl. erreicht werden.
Die Reaktion kann vorzugsweise in Gegenwart eines organischen Lösungsmittels, wie z. B. Kohlenwasserstof fen wie Benzol, Toluol u. dgl., Alkansäuren wie Essig säure, Propionsäure u. dgl., Aethern, Alkoholen und Lösungsmitteln wie Dimethylformamid u. dgl. durchge- führt werden. Die Reaktion erfolgt üblicherweise bei Raumtemperatur oder bei erhöhter Temperatur. Bevor zugt sind Temperaturen zwischen 20 und 100 C.
Verbindungen der Formel I sind psychostimulierend, antiinflammatorisch und antipyretisch wirksam. Sie eig nen sich weiterhin zur Herstellung von pharmazeutisch wertvollen Verbindungen der Formel<B>111</B> und deren Tautomeren.
Das folgende Beispiel illustriert das erfindungsge- mässe Verfahren. Alle Temperaturen sind C angege- ben. Zersetzungsschmelzpunkte wurden in offenen Ca pillaren bestimmt. Sie können abhängig von der Erhit zung um 10 variieren. <I>Beispiel</I> Zu einer Lösung von 0,4 g (0,0016 Mol) 3'-Phenyl- spiro-[imidazolidin-2,1'-phthalan] [oder 2-[2'(α-Hy- droxybenzyl)-phenyl]-2-imidazolin] in 40m1 Chloro form werden 0,25m1 Bortrifluoridätherat zugegeben. Diese Lösung wird 6 Stunden unter Stickstoffatmos phäre zum Rückfluss' erhitzt und 18 Stunden bei 25 gehalten.
Es werden weitere 0,25 ml Borfluorid-ätherat zugegeben und 3 Stunden zum Rückfluss erhitzt. Die Lösung wird mit wässriger Carbonatlösung gewaschen. Konzentration der getrockneten Chloroformphase ergibt ein gelbes Öl, das in Tetrahydrofuran gelöst wird. Nach dem Ansäuren mit äthanolischer Schwefelsäure und Zugabe von Aethylacetat, erhält man einen kristallinen Niederschlag, der nach Umkristallisation aus einer Mi schung von Methanol und Aethylacetat 0,15 g (28 %) weisse Prismen von 2,3-Dihydro-5-phenyl-5H-imidazo [2,1-a]isoindol-sulfat vom Schmelzpunkt 216 -223 (Zers.) liefert.
Der Mischschmelzpunkt ist 219 -224 (Zers.) Das Ausgangsmaterial kann wie folgt hergestellt werden: Eine Lösung von 3,3 g Chromtrioxid und 5,9 g 2-(2- Aminoäthyl)-1-phenylisoindolin in 250 ml Essigsäure wird 18 Stunden bei 55-60 gerührt. Die Lösung wird gekühlt, auf Eis gegossen und alkalisch gestellt. Extrak tion mit Methylenchlorid und Entfernen des Lösungs mittels ergibt ein braunes Öl, das teilweise kristallisiert. Umkristallisation aus einer Mischung von Chloroform und Aethylacetat liefert 2-(2-Benzoylphenyl)-2-imidazo- lin als weisse Prismen vom Schmelzpunkt 194-196 (Zers.).
Zu einer Lösung von 5 g Natriumborhydrid in 100 ml Aethanol werden 25 g 2-(2-Benzoylphenyl)-2- imidazolin [oder 2,3-Dihydro-5-phenyl-5H-imidazo [2,1-a]isoindol-5-ol] in kleinen Portionen zugegeben. Die Suspension wird 18 Stunden bei 25 gerührt und in 600 ml Eiswasser gegossen. Nach Filtration erhält man 24,5 g (97 %) eines kristallinen Niederschlages vom Schmelzpunkt 117-119 .
Eine Probe wird aus einer Mischung von Methylenchlorid, Aether und Petroläther umkristallisiert, wobei man weisse Prismen von 3'- Phenylspiro [imidazolin-2,1'-phthalan]- [oder 2-[2'- (a-Hydroxybenzyl)-phenyl]-2-imidazolin] vom Schmelzpunkt<B>119-1211</B> erhält. Ultraviolett Maxima (2-Propanol 259 ms (i = 2,400) Inflexions 284 my (e = 1,500) nmr (CDCl3) d 3.47 (s, 4, -CH2-CH2), d 5.80 (s, 1, CH), 8 6.23 (s, 2, OH, NH), ö 7.d-7.8 (m, 9, arom CH); nahes IR (CHCl3) max 1.49 ,u (e = 0.9) (NH).
