Addition for plaster of paris
The present invention relates to an additive for plaster of paris (the term plaster of paris is known to be used to wet model plasters). The addition is intended in particular for hemihydrate plasters, provided that such plaster is used for shaping in the ceramics industry, especially in the manufacture of porcelain, including sanitary porcelain, possibly also in the manufacture of earthenware or interlocking brick production.
The plaster molds used in the ceramics industry are required to have not only high compressive and tensile strength, but also high abrasion resistance and thus retain a smooth surface for a long time so that post-treatment of the moldings made using the plaster molds is not necessary before drying . Furthermore, the tendency of the plaster of paris molds to form cracks under the different temperature and humidity conditions during storage and use of the molds should be as low as possible in order to keep the production of unusable moldings and the cost of providing replacement molds low. At the same time it is very important that the plaster molds can absorb a lot of water quickly when they are used in order to speed up the removal of the moldings from the molds.
The above-described requirements are met by the addition according to the invention for plaster of paris. Due to the addition according to the invention, in plaster of paris molds, compared with objects made of plaster of paris that do not contain this addition, their flexural strength by about 50% and their compressive strength by about 25% as well as the surface smoothness can be increased and this smoothness can be maintained for a longer time than before, finally the tendency to form Cracks are reduced without these improvements being bought at the expense of an undesirably large change in the setting time of the plaster of paris during the production of the molds or a considerable change in the amount and rate of water absorption of the molds.
The invention now provides an additive for molded plaster containing polymers of vinyl acetate, at least 80 percent by weight of these polymers having particles with a diameter of 0.1 to 1 micron, and up to 0.5 percent by weight of ionic emulsifiers, based on the weight of the Polymers or copolymers. The additive also preferably contains up to 2%, based on the weight of the polymer, of protective colloids and up to 6%, based on the weight of the polymer, of nonionic emulsifiers, the total amount of protective colloids, ionic and nonionic emulsifiers at least 2% by weight, but at most 8% by weight, based on the polymer weight.
The additive according to the invention can be used for all known plaster of paris, which contain hemihydrate plaster as an essential component, which has been or could be used up to now for the production of plaster molds in the ceramic industry. These gypsum masses can also be conventional additives such. B. foam-preventing or foam-destroying substances such. B. organopolysiloxane emulsions, contained or mixed with it.
The copolymers of vinyl acetate and monomers copolymerizable therewith and containing at least 40 percent by weight of vinyl acetate units can also be used as polymers of vinyl acetate. Examples of monomers which can be copolymerized with vinyl acetate and which result in polymers suitable for the addition according to the invention are in particular vinyl laurate, also di-n-butyl maleate, vinyl chloride and acrylic acid esters. The copolymers can consist of more than two different types of polymer units.
The vinyl acetate polymers to be used according to the invention can be prepared in a known manner by emulsion or dispersion polymerization. They can be added in the form of aqueous dispersions or in the form of the water-redispersible powders produced by drying the dispersions obtained in the polymerization and optionally mixed with additives to the plaster of paris before molding, in particular together with the mixing water.
The ratio of water to gypsum during hardening is not changed by the addition according to the invention, as long as the amount of mixing water conventionally used, ie. H. the amount of additive-free amount of water used for hardening the gypsum, by the amount of water usually introduced with the additive according to the invention is reduced.
The additive according to the invention is preferably used in amounts of 0.25 to 5 percent by weight, in particular 1 to 2 percent by weight, calculated on the dry weight of the vinyl acetate polymers and based on the dry weight of the gypsum.
The polymers of vinyl acetate can contain, as protective colloids, ionic and / or nonionic emulsifiers, which are usually present in such polymers from their production, or dispersants of the aforementioned classes that are mixed therewith. Examples of protective colloids are polyvinyl alcohol, which optionally contains up to 40 mol percent acyl groups, in particular acetyl groups, gelatin and cellulose derivatives, e.g. B.
Water-soluble methyl cellulose, (darboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyethylmethyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl cellulose, copolymers of maleic acid or its half-esters and styrene, also starch, dextrin derivatives, polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyacrylic acid amide. Hydroxyethyl cellulose is preferred.
Examples of ionic emulsifiers are anionic emulsifiers, e.g. B. alkali and ammonium salts of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, straight-chain or branched monocarboxylic acids, e.g. B. sodium laurate or sodium stearate, of acidic esters of 9 to 18 carbon atoms containing alkanols and sulfuric acid, e.g. B. sodium lauryl sulfate, of secondary sulfonic acids of 10 to 18 carbon atoms having alkanes, of alkylarylsulfonic acids and of dialkyl sulfosuccinates, and cationic emulsifiers, e.g. B. Stearamidopropyldimethyl - beta-hydroxyethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate. Examples of nonionic emulsifiers are block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, e.g.
B. from 10 moles of ethylene oxide and 30 moles of propylene oxide and reaction products of at least 4 moles of ethylene oxide and organic, active hydrogen atoms, d. H.
in the reaction according to Zerewitinoff gaseous hydrogen-forming compounds with at least 8 carbon atoms, which can be fatty acids, alcohols, alkylphenols, oxycarboxylic acids, carboxamides or primary or secondary amines, e.g. B. Reaction products of 1 mole of nonylphenol and 8 to 50 moles of ethylene oxide or of 1 mole of oleyl alcohol and 20 moles of ethylene oxide. Reaction products from alcohols and / or alkylphenols and ethylene oxide are preferred. Mixtures of different classes of dispersants as well as of different types within the above mentioned classes of Dtsper, giermftteln can be used.
Processes suitable for producing the additives according to the invention are generally known and many substances which are suitable for this purpose are available commercially.
It was surprising, however, that these substances could be used to produce an additive that had the required special properties.
The additive according to the invention preferably does not contain any protective colloids as a dispersant and the amount of nonionic emulsifiers contained in the additive should outweigh the amount of ionic emulsifiers, if ionic emulsifiers are present at all. Preferred polymers of vinyl acetate are those in which at least 80 percent by weight of the polymer particles have a diameter of 0.1 to 0.3 microns.
In the following examples, the percentages given are percentages by weight, unless otherwise stated.
Examples of addition 1
A homopolymer of vinyl acetate, at least 80% of the polymer particles having a diameter of 0.2 to 1 micron, in the form of a 50% aqueous dispersion containing 1.4%, based on the weight of the polyvinyl acetate, of hydroxyethyl cellulose as protective colloid, 0 , 1%, based on the weight of the polyvinyl acetate, sodium lauryl sulfate as an ionic emulsifier and 1.0%, based on the weight of the polyvinyl acetate, nonylphenol polyoxyethylene glycol ether with an average of about 15 oxyethylene units per molecule as a nonionic emulsifier.
Addition 2
A homopolymer of vinyl acetate, where at least 80% of the polymer particles have a diameter of 0.1 to 0.3 microns, in the form of a 50% aqueous dispersion containing 0.1%, based on the weight of the polyvinyl acetate, of sodium lauryl sulfate as ionic Emulsifier and 6%, based on the weight of the polyvinyl acetate, nonylphenol polyoxyethylene glycol ether with an average of about 20 oxyethylene units per molecule as a nonionic emulsifier.
From 1.2 kg hemihydrate plaster (Windsheimer gypsum) and 1 kg water, which was mixed with the amounts of additives 1 and 2 given in the table below, expressed in% dispersion based on the weight of the gypsum or with no additives, prisms with the dimensions 4 x 4 x 16 cm are produced. The prisms are initially stored for 7 days at 200 ° C. and 100% relative humidity and then for 28 days at 200 ° C. and 65% relative humidity. Subsequently, flexural strength and compressive strength are determined. In addition, 1 ml of water is dripped onto each prism and the time it takes for the water to be completely absorbed and the diameter of the water stain are determined (the diameter of the water stain decreases as the amount of water absorbed increases.
