Process for the production of moldings or coatings from polymers containing isocyanurate groups The invention relates to a process for the production of moldings or coatings on non-textile substrates by producing polymers that have isocyanurate groups in the molecule from compounds or mixtures of compounds with more than one isocyanate group in the molecule and production of the molded body, respectively. Coatings made from these polymers.
The polymerization of compounds with aliphati rule and aromatic isocyanate groups is known and has been described in many variations. In general, alkaline catalysts are used in this polymerization. These cause a conversion of the NCO groups into isocyanurate rings, this reaction generally being carried out in bulk or in solution to defined proportions of isocyanurate rings containing the polymers or with complete Ausreak tion of the NCO groups present. When using compounds with more than one isocyanurate group in the molecule, this trimerization generally leads, under uncontrollable conditions, to a completely crosslinked and brittle material.
A further difficulty in these polymerization reactions must be regarded as the fact that there is generally an incubation time which makes it practically impossible to start this reaction at a defined point in time. The exothermic polymerization of NCO groups can only be started at room temperature only when using very active catalysts. However, it is then practically impossible to get hold of the reaction.
Therefore, such polymerization reactions are generally carried out with weakly effective (basic) activators at elevated temperatures or a polymerization together with the usual, exothermic and room temperature addition reactions of an NCO group of compounds with active hydrogen atoms due to the exothermic heat of reaction this addition reaction started. In addition, polymerization reactions with special isocyanates such as tolylene diisocyanates using, for example, 2,4,6-tris-dimethylaminomethylphenol or N, N ', N "- tris (3-dimethylaminopropyl) hexahydrotriazine, were already carried out earlier.
The reaction products obtained in this way, however, have such a strong amine odor that this stands in the way of practical use. In addition, the amine components used lead to an uneven course of the polymerization reaction and thus to a process product which is not technically satisfactory in every respect.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that plastics based on polyisocyanates with advantageous technological properties are obtained if a compound with more than one isocyanate group, optionally in the presence of auxiliaries such as leveling agents, dispersants, stabilizers, etc., is reacted with such basic catalysts brings that contain at least two aromatic nuclei and at least one araliphatically bound tertiary amine function in the molecule.
The process according to the invention is accordingly characterized in that basic catalysts are used in the production of the polymers which have at least two aromatic nuclei and at least one araliphatically bound tertiary amino group in the molecule.
Surprisingly, these special catalysts give a polymerization reaction of the isocyanate groups that begins even at room temperature and proceeds evenly, without the reaction becoming uncontrollable as a result of spontaneous reaction, or without the reaction having to be triggered by an additional mechanically or chemically initiated thermal shock.
The shaped bodies produced by the process according to the invention are distinguished by a high temperature resistance and practical incombustibility, as can be seen in detail from the exemplary embodiments. When processing on foams, they are in this respect also the, evidently due to the defined polymerization reactions taking place, with the catalysts already listed above, namely 2,4,6-tris-dimethylamino-methylphenol and N, N ', N '' -Tris- (3-dimethylaminopropyl) -hexahydrotriazine, superior to manufactured foams.
As polyisocyanates, aliphatic and preferably aromatic polyvalent isocyanates come into question, for. B. alkylene diisocyanates such as tetra- and hexamethylene diisocyanate, arylene diisocyanates and their alkylation products such as the phenylene diisocyanates, naphthylene diisocyanates, diphenylmethane diisocyanates, tolylene diisocyanates, di- and triisopropylbenzene diisocyanates and triphenylmethane triisocyanates, p-isocyanatophenylthiophosphoric acid, isocyanate isocyanate, isocyanato-phenyl-isocyanate, isocyanato-phenyl-isocyanate-isocyanate, isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate-isocyanate, ) ethyl isocyanate or the xylylene diisocyanates and also the polyisocyanates substituted by a wide variety of substituents such as alkoxy, nitro, chlorine, bromine, and also with insufficient amounts of polyhydroxyl compounds such as trimethylolpropane, hexanetriol,
Glycerol, butanediol, polypropylene oxides, polyethylene oxides or adducts of ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide with polyfunctional starters such as polyols, poly amines or amino alcohols, modified polyisocyanates. The polyisocyanates which can be prepared according to Belgian patent specification No. 714,850 are also suitable as polyisocyanates to be used according to the invention. A preferred polyisocyanate that may be mentioned is the polyisocyanate which can be prepared by aniline-formaldehyde condensation and subsequent phosgenation. Further z.
B. polyisocyanates blocked with phenols, oxy- gen or bisulfite, acetal-modified isocyanates and partially polymerized isocyanates with isocyanurate rings. Mixtures of different isocyanates can of course also be used, in which case monoisocyanates such as phenyl isocyanate, naphthyl isocyanate or cyclohexyl isocyanate can also be used.
Solids, coatings, lacquers or foam and cellular bodies can be produced by the process. The production of foams is given before. To produce foams, the blowing reaction is carried out using additional blowing agents. As a propellant, in addition to the splitting off gases such as nitrogen-decomposing compounds such. B. azo compounds, sulfonylazides, low-boiling hydrocarbons and their halogenation products are used, for. B. halogenated methanes or ethanes, ethylene dichloride, vinylidene chloride, trifluorochloromethane, methylene chloride. The usual emulsifiers and foam stabilizers can be used as additives to facilitate the foaming reactions, e.g.
B. higher alkyl or aryl sulphonic acids and their salts, sulfuric acid esters of castor oil or castor oleic acid and their salts, oleic or stearic acid salts, silicone oils containing basic groups, co-condensation products containing siloxane and alkylene oxide components.
According to the invention, the catalysts used in the polymerization reactions are those basic tertiary amines which, in addition to at least one araliphatically bound tertiary amine group, contain at least two aromatic nuclei in the molecule. The aromatic nuclei can either be condensed with one another directly or connected to one another via radicals such as alkylene groups, alkylidene groups, which can be interrupted by heteroatoms, or heteroatoms such as oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus or amino groups.
In addition to aromatically bound tertiary amino groups, the molecules should optionally contain at least one araliphatically bound tertiary amino group. B. should be separated from the aromatic system by 1-5, preferably 1-3, carbon atoms. The chain between the aromatic rule and the araliphatic amino group can contain additional heteroatoms or by heteroatoms, eg. B. oxygen atoms, be interrupted.
Such catalysts can be produced in various ways. Corresponding aromatics can be converted into polynuclear chloromethyl compounds by chloromethylation, which can be converted into benzylamine or β-phenethylamine groups either by direct reaction with secondary amines or by treatment with cyanides, reduction and peralkylation. Benzylamine groups can also be obtained by Mannich reaction of corresponding active aromatic systems such as phenols or tertiary amines with aldehydes such as formaldehyde and secondary or primary amines.
In this case it is possible, by the simultaneous use of additional aldehyde, especially formaldehyde, to build up the catalyst to be used according to the invention. In addition to the araliphatic tertiary amino groups, these catalysts can contain further functional groups, in particular tertiary amino, halogen or phenolic hydroxyl groups.
Condensation products of polyhydric phenols, formaldehyde and secondary amines are according to the invention; used as catalysts before given. Particularly favorable results are obtained above all if condensation products of one mole of a phenol, n moles of secondary amine and m moles of formaldehyde are used as catalysts, the quantitative ratios being determined by the equation z # hm> n and z the An means number of aromatic CH bonds in the phenol component that are reactive towards formaldehyde.
The phenolic hydroxyl groups present in these systems do not react under the reaction conditions due to their tendency to split off with the polyisocyanate used as the reaction component. According to IR spectroscopic investigations, the foams obtained are practically free of urethane bonds. The in the molecules IN ANY dene, araliphatically bound tertiary amino group can also be part of a ring system, eg.
B. an oxazolidine ring, as they are obtained for example in Mannich reactions of corresponding aromatics in the presence of secondary amines. Both phenols with several aromatics can be used and the formation of the polyaromatics from mononuclear phenols and formaldehyde can be carried out together with the Mannich reaction.
Monohydric or polyhydric phenols with at least one CH bonds capable of condensation with respect to an aldehyde in the o- and / or p-position to the OH groups can be used as phenols. Phenol, cresols, xylenols, dihydroxybenzenes, nonylphenol, tert-butylphenols, isoctylphenols, isododecylphenols, ethylphenols, etc. may be mentioned as examples. The phenols used can also be substituted by substituents such as chlorine or bromine.
Instead of these mononuclear phenols, polynuclear phenols such as 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane, tetrachloro- and tetrabromo-4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane, 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl or 2,4'-dihydro- xydiphenylmethane can be used. Formaldehyde is generally used in the form of its aqueous solution or as paraformaldehyde or trioxane. As a sec. In addition to the particularly noteworthy dimethylamine, amine components can be any secondary amines such as diethylamine, dibutylamine, piperidine, pyrrolidine or morpholine.
The catalysts to be used according to the invention can be prepared by known processes, e.g. B. by adding formaldehyde to the mixture of phenolic components and the amine. Here at least 1 mole of formaldehyde must be used per mole of secondary amine in order to achieve the greatest possible conversion of the amine. The simultaneous formation of the polyaromatic system naturally requires the use of additional formaldehyde over the amounts corresponding to the amine.
Further details on the preparation of the catalysts used can also be seen from the examples.
In addition to these catalysts, the usual catalysts known in isocyanate chemistry, z. B. organic metal compounds, inorganic cal and organic metal salts and tertiary amines such as dimethylbenzylamine or triethylenediamine can also be used. In general, according to IR spectroscopic analyzes, depending on the conditions, in particular depending on the reaction temperature reached, more or less high proportions of carbodiimide structures are formed in the foams, the proportion of which in the foams is due to the use of the catalysts known for the production of carbodiimides, especially 3-5-valent organic phosphorus compounds such as phospholines, phospholine oxides, tertiary phosphines, (cyclic) esters,
Amides and ester amides of phosphorous and phosphoric acid, can be increased.
Foams can be produced in the customary and generally known manner, preferably by machine, by mixing the reaction components and pouring them into a suitable molding device. The amount of propellants is determined by the desired volume weight. In general, between 1 and 100, preferably between 5 and 50 parts by weight of a fluorochloromethane or a corresponding amount of another propellant, based on the isocyanate component, are used. In general, densities between 15 and 200 or even higher, preferably between 20 and 200 kg / m3, are aimed for.
The amount of catalyst is essentially determined by the nitrogen content and the basicity of the catalyst, between 0.5 and 100% by weight, preferably between 1 and 25% by weight, of catalyst component, based on the isocyanate component, deploy.
In addition to the components used in foam production, the usual auxiliaries such as pigments, flame retardants such as antimony, phosphorus or halogen compounds, provided they do not react with the isocyanate as a result of functional groups, can be added.
In the same way, paints and solids can be produced by methods that are known in principle. Paints are applied with the use of solvents and, if necessary after the addition of the customary paint auxiliaries, pigments, etc., applied to a wide variety of substrates such as wood, glass, metal or paper. The condensation can also be completed at an elevated temperature.
Solids are produced by pouring the polyisocyanates or polyisocyanate mixtures to which the catalyst has been added into molds, optionally with cooling or reheating.
An IR spectroscopic examination of the plastics, varnishes, coatings and foams obtained shows high proportions of isocyanurate rings in addition to small amounts of carbodiimide groups. A) Preparation of the catalysts to be used according to the invention A1 282 parts by weight (3 mol) of phenol are mixed with 900 parts by weight of a 25% strength aqueous dimethylamine solution (5 mol), and then another 570 parts by weight of For malin (7 moles) are added in the course of 30 minutes. The mixture is heated to about 30 for 1 hour and then to 80 over a further 2 hours.
After 2 hours at 80, the organic phase is separated off from the aqueous solution by adding sodium chloride and the organic phase is concentrated at 80 to 90 / 10-20 Torr. About 500 parts by weight of a condensation product are obtained which, with a nitrogen content of 12.10 / 0, has a viscosity of about 1000 cP ". By concentrating the product at 100, 491 parts by weight of reaction products with an amine equivalent weight of 119.2 and a viscosity of 12650 cP ".
A2 Analogously to A1, equal amounts by weight of phenol, dimethylamine and formalin are converted. Instead of the separation described there by adding sodium chloride, the product is isolated by an immediate vacuum treatment at 100/12 Torr. This gives about 580 parts by weight of a condensation product with an equivalent weight of around 125 and a viscosity of around 50,000 cP ". As As In the in Al or
A described manner, the components listed in the table are reacted mitein other and the reaction products listed there obtained.

The solution is applied to metal and cures after just 2 hours at room temperature to form a hard coating which essentially contains isocyanurate rings in the IR spectrum.
b) A coating corresponding to Example 4 a) is produced by using 25 parts by weight of a pre-adduct comprised of 3 moles of hexamethylene diisocyanate and 1 mole of water and 1.5 parts by weight of a catalyst A 9.
c) A coating corresponding to Example 4 a) is obtained from 25 parts by weight of one polyisocyanurate and 2 parts by weight by co-trimerizing 2 moles of toluene-2,4-diisocyanate and 1 mole of hexamethylene diisocyanate (to 50% of the theoretical NCO value) of the catalyst A 3 produced on a glass surface:
d) A coating corresponding to 4 a), but more elastic, is made from 25 parts by weight of a polyisocyanurate obtained from tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate and a propylene oxide adduct with trimethylolpropane (OH number 510) containing 17.3% NCO and 1, 5 parts by weight of a catalyst A 6 on paper and fabric Herge provides.
