B. Vinylchlorid, Vinylbromid, Vinylidenchlorid; Olefine, z.
B. Äthylen, Propylen, Isobutylen; Acrylsäure- und Methacrylsäure- ester von Alkoholen, die 1 bis 18 C-Atome aufweisen, wie Methyl- und Äthylmethacrylat; Arcylamid; Meth- acrylamid; Methacrylnitril; Acrylnitril; Vinylester von Carbonsäuren, z. B. Vinylacetat, Vinylpropionat, Vinyl- benzoat; Vinyläther, z. B. Vinylmethyläther, Vinyliso- butyläther; vinylaromatische Verbindungen, z. B. Styrol, a-Methylstyrol, Vinyltoluol, p-Äthylstyrol, 2,4-Dimethyl- styrol, o-Chlorstyrol, 2,5-Dichlorstyrol.
Für das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren kann jedes zweiwertige Phenol verwendet werden, das als einzige reaktionsfähige Gruppen zwei phenolische Hydroxyl gruppen aufweist. Beispiele hierfür sind die folgenden Verbindungen: 1,1-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-methan, 2,2- -Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propan, 4,4-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)- -heptan, usw.; zweiwertige Phenoläther wie Bis(4-hydro- xyphenyl)-äther, Bis(3,5-dichlor-4-hydroxyphenyl)-äther, usw.;
Dihydroxy-diphenyle, wie p,p'-Dihydroxydiphenyl, 3,3'-Dichlor-4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl, usw.; Dihydroxy- arylsulfone, wie Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-sulfon, Bis(3,5-di- methyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-sulfon, Bis(3 - methyl-5-äthyl-4- -hydroxyphenyl)-sulfon, usw.; Dihydroxybenzole, Resor- zin, Hydrochinon;

Process for the production of thermoplastic graft copolymers As is known, the graft copolymers consist of a polymeric or copolymeric base chain onto which side chains of another type of polymer or copolymer are grafted.
Graft polymerization is suitable for the production of polymers that are modified to eliminate undesired properties and thus to improve the usefulness of a product. For example, the tendency to crack under tension in polycarbonates can be reduced by grafting polycarbonate chains onto a polymer base chain by means of functional groups. The tensile heat resistance of a polycarbonate graft copolymer increases in many cases with increasing content of the basic chain to a maximum and then falls again. Accordingly, graft copolymerization offers a means of producing copolymers with specific properties tailored to a given application.
One aim of the present invention is a process for the production of thermoplastic graft copolymers in which polycarbonate groups are grafted onto a polymer base chain.
According to the invention, the above objectives can be achieved by converting a solution of a basic polymer which has pendant functional groups in an organic solvent with a dihydric phenol and a carbonate precursor in the presence of an acid acceptor and a monohydroxy compound as a chain terminator, with at least some of the functional groups are carboxyl groups and the carbonate precursor used is carbonyl halide, haloformate or a mixture of these substances.
Preferably, the base polymer contains an average of less than about 50 functional groups per molecule of the base polymer. In the present context, the designation (appended) means that the applicable carboxyl group is not part of the base chain of the base polymer, but rather represents a side chain thereof. Accordingly, the carboxyl group offers a point of attack for the condensation of aromatic polycarbonate side chains it is critical that the graft copolymer is thermoplastic, and to ensure this, the number of functional chains attached to the base polymer must not be excessively high.
Otherwise, the graft copolymer made from the base polymer and the aromatic polycarbonate and the aromatic polycarbonate graft copolymer made gels or cross-links and thus does not remain thermoplastic. The base polymer used according to the invention can either be a homopolymer or a copolymer composed of two or more basic building blocks. A copolymer base polymer can be made from two monomers that have functional groups. But it can also be made from two types of monomers, of which only one type has functional groups.
The following formula is used to determine the number of functional groups or the functionality: S = (Pn) (molar fraction of the functional groups in the polymer) where S is the functionality and Pn is the average degree of polymerization.
All thermoplastic polymers which have functional groups which are at least in part carboxyl groups can be used to produce the base polymer. Examples of thermoplastic polymers suitable for the manufacture of the base polymer are homopolymers, copolymers and interpolymers of cellulose ethers and esters which have free carboxyl groups, eg. B. ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, cellulose butyrate, homopolymers and copolymers of unsaturated carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, e.g. B. acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and maleic anhydride, etc.
Furthermore, the thermoplastic polymers can be copolymers of the above-mentioned compounds with other Monomerverbin- boys which contain the vinylidene group without functional groups. These include monomeric compounds such as vinyl halides, e.g. B. vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinylidene chloride; Olefins, e.g.
B. ethylene, propylene, isobutylene; Acrylic and methacrylic esters of alcohols which have 1 to 18 carbon atoms, such as methyl and ethyl methacrylate; Arylamide; Methacrylamide; Methacrylonitrile; Acrylonitrile; Vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, e.g. B. vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl benzoate; Vinyl ethers, e.g. B. vinyl methyl ether, vinyl isobutyl ether; vinyl aromatic compounds, e.g. B. styrene, α-methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, p-ethylstyrene, 2,4-dimethylstyrene, o-chlorostyrene, 2,5-dichlorostyrene.
The preferred base polymer for the process according to the invention is butyl methacrylate-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or styrene-hydroxylethyl acrylate.
In practice, the process of the invention for the preparation of the graft copolymer is carried out by the base polymer being reacted with a divalent phenol and a carbonate precursor in the presence of an acid acceptor and a chain terminator. The base polymer is first dissolved in an organic solvent. The dihydric phenol, the chain terminator and the acid acceptor are then added. Then a stoichiometric amount of the carbonate precursor is fed into the system for the reaction with the dihydric phenol and for the formation of an aromatic polycarbonate which condenses with the hydroxyl groups attached to the base polymer.
The reaction is carried out at atmospheric pressure and preferably at temperatures between 20 and 130.degree. However, these conditions are not critical to the process.
The chain terminator used for the reaction is a monofunctional hydroxy compound such as phenol, cyclohexanol, methanol or p-bromophenol. The amount used is at least 1 mole of the chain terminator per mole of the functional groups contained in the base polymer. The use of a chain terminator is essential to the process to avoid the formation of a gelled or crosslinked product. Phenol is the preferred chain terminator.
Any dihydric phenol which has two phenolic hydroxyl groups as the only reactive groups can be used for the process according to the invention. Examples of these are the following compounds: 1,1-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) methane, 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, 4,4-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) heptane, etc. ; dihydric phenol ethers such as bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) ether, bis (3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxyphenyl) ether, etc .;
Dihydroxydiphenyls such as p, p'-dihydroxydiphenyl, 3,3'-dichloro-4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl, etc .; Dihydroxyaryl sulfones, such as bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, bis (3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, bis (3-methyl-5-ethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, etc. .; Dihydroxybenzenes, resorcinol, hydroquinone;
Halogen and alkyl substituted dihydroxybenzenes such as 1,4-dihydroxy-2-chlorobenzene, 1,4-dihydroxy-2,3-dichlorobenzene, 1,4-dihydroxy-2-methylbenzene, etc .; and dihydroxydiphenyl sulfoxides, such as bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfoxide, bis (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfoxide, etc.
Either a carbonyl halide or a halogen formate can be used as the carbonate precursor for the process according to the invention. Suitable carbonyl halides are carbonyl bromides, chlorides, fluorides etc. and mixtures of these substances. Suitable halogen formates include the bis-haloformates of bivalent phenols (bis-chloroformates of hydroquinone, etc.) or glycols (bis-haloformates of ethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, polyethylene glycol, etc.). Of the other known carbonate precursors, phosgene, i. Carbonyl chloride preferred.
The reaction is carried out in the presence of an acid acceptor, which can be an organic or inorganic compound. Suitable organic acid acceptors are the tertiary amines including pyridine, triethylamine, dimethylaniline, tributylamine, etc. Suitable inorganic acid acceptors are the hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates or phosphates of alkali or alkaline earth metals.
The products obtainable according to the invention can be used for many purposes in the production of molded parts or for the production of sheet material or foils or films. The advantage of the present products is that they are resistant to organic solvents, have better crack resistance properties under tension than the straight-chain organic polycarbonates, and have excellent heat resistance.
In the following examples, all parts are based on weight, unless otherwise stated.
Example 1 A solution of 43 g of methyl acrylate, 0.38 g of acrylic acid and 0.5 g of 4,4'-azo-bis-isobutyric acid nitrile in 43 g of toluene was irradiated with a sunlight lamp (removal of 30 cm), under a nitrogen atmosphere for 30 min. The solution becomes viscous and the temperature rises to 70 ° C. The reaction was continued with intermittent irradiation for a further 32 min (irradiation time). The polymethyl acrylate (PMA) solution obtained contains 45% solids.
Parts of the PMA solution prepared as described above were dissolved with bis-phenol-A (BPA) and phenol in 380 g of methylene chloride and 45 g of pyridine and phosgenated at a rate of 0.5 g / min until a drop in temperature was observed. Then a solution of 18 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid in 100 ml of water was slowly added. The polymer was precipitated and washed with methanol. The proportions and yields of the individual polymers are given in the table below. The viscosity values (intrinsic) are measured in dioxane at 30 ° C.
