1. Diejenigen vom Azol-Typus, wie z. B. Imidazol, Pyrazol, Triazol und deren Derivate, z. B. Benzotriazol, Methylbenzotriazol, Aethylbenzotriazol, Butylbenzotriazol, Dodecylbenzotriazol, Methylenbis-benzotriazol, und Naphthotriazol.
2. Salicylaldehyd-semicarbazon und deren C1- bis C20-Alkyl-Derivate, z. B. Methyl- und Isopropylsalicyl aidehydsemicarbazon.

Synthetic lubricants for aircraft gas turbines
The present invention relates to synthetic lubricants suitable for use in the severe conditions encountered in the operation of modern aircraft gas turbines.
Lubricants of this type, which are based on a thermally stable ester, contain a number of additives which primarily serve to give the base material good oxidation-resistant, corrosion-resistant and load properties at high temperature.
The problem of thermal stability in lubricants for aircraft gas turbines can be solved satisfactorily by using certain sterically hindered ester base materials, which generally also have good properties at low temperatures, since in many cases they are liquid at temperatures of -40 ° C. or below . A more difficult problem, however, is that of oxidation stability and corrosion resistance, which arises because the lubricants must work in contact with the air at high oil temperatures (about 200 ° C.). These conditions greatly accelerate the deterioration of the lubricant by oxidation, which generally leads to an increase in its viscosity and acidity and corrosion of or the formation of deposits on metal surfaces.
An excessive increase in viscosity can lead to a restricted flow of the lubricant to the bearings of the engine, which results in insufficient lubrication when starting and / or insufficient cooling when the engine is running. Deterioration in the condition of engine elements due to excessive corrosion or fouling can cause poor functioning of moving parts, and excessive build-up of oil-insoluble materials can lead to poor lubrication due to clogging of oil paths. It is highly desirable, therefore, that a lubricant of this type should have no more than a slight tendency to increase its viscosity and acidity in service.
The performance of a lubricant in this regard is often determined by subjecting it to an oxidation / corrosion test in which a sample of oil is held at high temperature in contact with metal specimens while a stream of air is blown through it for an extended period of time. Standards for performing such tests are provided in certain government and engine manufacturer regulations for gas turbine lubricants.
In a standard of this test for oils that are to be used at high temperatures, the sample weighs 90 g, while the test conditions selected are a temperature of 204 C, an air flow rate of 5 liters per hour and a test duration of 72 hours; 6.25 cm2 plates made of magnesium alloy, aluminum alloy, copper, silver and steel are used as metal test pieces. In one variant, the temperature is 218 C and the test duration is 48 hours. In these test standards, oils that have moderate resistance to oxidation at high temperatures have a large increase in viscosity and acidity and tend to attack certain metals, especially copper and magnesium.
Another serious problem with lubricants of this type is that they must have adequate loading capacity.
This problem arises because ester bases which are agile enough to meet the requirements placed on lubricants of this type at low temperature (e.g. to easily start engines in extreme cold conditions) are very thin and under the operating conditions have too little physicality at high temperatures. Various methods are used to determine the loading capacity of such lubricants; z. B. by means of the known transmission device IAE. Government and engine manufacturer regulations usually specify lower limits for loading characteristics.
Various additives have been suggested to solve the above problems, but in making a final lubricant blend it is important that combinations of base oil and additives remain clean in use and do not result in unacceptable deposits on engine components. One method of determining the cleanliness of an oil in this regard is the panel coking test, described below. An indication of the cleanliness of an oil can also be obtained by measuring the amount of insoluble material formed in the above-described oxidation / corrosion tests.
Regulations for lubricants for gas turbines in modern aircraft are set by the British and American governments and various manufacturers and designers of such turbines, such as: B. Bristol Siddeley Rolls Royce, Pratt & Whitney and General Electric. Unfortunately, the requirements of these different locations are not always the same, and it is possible that an oil may meet the requirements of one location while it does not meet the requirements of other regulations. Z.
For example, British regulations generally tend to give greater weight to resilience than American regulations; while it is possible to meet these stringent stress requirements through an appropriate choice of stress additives, the oils obtained have heretofore been satisfactory from the standpoint of the very high resistance to oxidation and corrosion required by certain American regulations.
A special composition of a lubricant has now been found which overcomes the disadvantages mentioned. This lubrication composition meets or approximates the requirements of the current (July 1967) regulations for the turbines of supersonic transport aircraft.
The present invention relates to a composition for lubricating based on a synthetic oil, which is characterized in that the base oil consists of a liquid, neutral polyester, as obtained by esterifying (1) an aliphatic monohydric and / or polyhydric alcohol, the 5th to 10 and preferably 5 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule and no hydrogen atoms bonded to any carbon atom in position 2 with respect to a group -OH is obtained with (2) an aliphatic mono- and / or polycarboxylic acid having 3 to 12 carbon atoms per molecule, wherein the base oil contains the following additives in dissolved form:
: (a) 1 to 8, preferably 2 to 6, especially 3 to 5, percent by weight of an alkylated aromatic or araliphatic amine as antioxidant, in particular one in which the alkyl groups have up to 14 carbon atoms, (b) 0.005 up to 1.5, preferably 0.01 to 0.5 wt / o of a copper passivator, (c) 0.5 to 5.0, preferably 0.5 to 3.5, in particular 1.0 to 3.0 0 / o by weight of a neutral organic phosphate of the formula (RO) 5PO, in which R are tolyl groups, phenyl groups, xylyl groups or alkyl or cycloalkyl groups with up to 10 carbon atoms, (d) 0.005 to 0.1, preferably 0.01 to 0 , 05 wt / o of a dialkyl hydrogen phosphate of the formula (R1O) 2- P (O) OH,
wherein R1 is an alkyl or cycloalkyl group of up to 10 carbon atoms, e.g. B. butyl or cyclohexyl, and (e) 0.005 to 0.2, preferably 0.01 to 0.1 wt / o of a dialkyl phosphite of the formula (R20) 2.P (O) H, in which R2 is an alkyl or cycloalkyl group of up to 10 carbon atoms, e.g. B. butyl or cyclohexyl.
The above combination of additives and base oil results in a lubricant that is relatively clean in use, but the cleanliness of the lubricant can be improved by the addition of a dispersing polymer, usually at a concentration of 0.01 to 5.0, especially 0 , 01 to 1.0 wt. / O, can be further improved. Polymer dispersing additives for oils for lubrication are known materials; Acrylate and methacrylate polymers, copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone with acrylates and methacrylates and copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone with olefins, as described in British Patent No. 1,085,375, are suitable. The polymers or copolymers must of course be soluble in the ester base oil.
The most suitable ones usually have a molecular weight in the range from 1,000 to 1,000,000, especially from 5,000 to 500,000. The acrylates and methacrylates mentioned are preferably those derived from acrylic or methacrylic acid and monohydric alcohols having 1 to 24 and especially 4 to 18 carbon atoms are derived.
If the lubricant is to be used to lubricate components of engines containing lead alloys, it is desirable to incorporate a lead corrosion inhibitor therein, usually at a concentration of from 0.01 to 1.0, preferably from 0.05 to 0.25 weight per cent . Suitable lead corrosion inhibitors are C1- to Cro-allryl gallates, neopentyl glycoidisebazate, sebacic acid and quinizarine. Propyl gallate is preferred.
If desired, the hydrolytic stability of the compositions according to the invention can be improved by adding from 0.005 to 0.5, preferably 0.02 to 0.1% by weight of an additive to promote the hydrolytic stability. Suitable additives for this are aliphatic or aliphatic / aromatic amines with up to 30 carbon atoms or hydroxyl derivatives thereof, preferably tertiary amines.
Most suitable amines for this purpose are those of the formula R4 (R5) NR6, where R4 and R5 are alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R6 is an alkaryl or hydroxy substituted alkaryl group of 20 carbon atoms. A preferred compound of this type is 2: 6-di-tertiary-butyl-4-dimethylaminomethylphenol.
The concentrations of additives given in this description are based on the ester base oil. The composition can contain more than one member of any of the specified classes of ingredients.
The base oil
The base oil is a hindered polyester of the type described above. Polyester is understood as meaning an ester which has at least 2 ester bonds per molecule; thus include diesters, such as. B. neopentyl glycol dipelargonate and di (2: 2: 4-trimethylpentyl) sebacate. The term neutral means a completely esterified product.
In the esterification reaction indicated above, more than one of the various indicated reactants such as. B. a mixture of monocarboxylic acids can be used; in any case, the neutral ester product obtained in this esterification reaction sometimes consists of a mixture of different ester molecules, so that the term polyester is to be understood in this context.
Examples of suitable acids and alcohols which can be used in the production of the polyester are caprylic acid, capric acid, caproic acid, oenanthic acid, pelargonic acid, valeric acid, pivalic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, 2-ethylhexanecarboxylic acid, adipic acid, sebacic acid, azelaic acid, 2: 2: 4 Trimethylpentanol, neopentyl alcohol, neopentyl glycol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolbutane, pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol.
The most suitable polyesters are the esters of trimethylolpropane, trimethylolbutane, trimethylol ethane, pentaerythritol and / or dipentaerythritol with one or more 3 to 10 carbon atoms having monocarboxylic acids, in particular one or more of those mentioned in the previous section, as well as more complex esters, e.g. B. those prepared from trimethylolpropane, sebacic acid and / or azelaic acid and one or more monocarboxylic acids having 3 to 10 carbon atoms, in particular one or more of those mentioned in the previous section. The trimethylolpropane and the dicarboxylic acid are best reacted in a molar ratio of 1: 0.05-0.75, preferably 1: 0.075-0.4, the amount of monocarboxylic acid being sufficient to achieve a carboxyl / hydroxyl equilibrium in the reagents to accomplish.
The antioxidant
Suitable alkylated aromatic amine antioxidants are those of the formula R8C6H4NHC6H4Rs wherein the groups R3 are alkyl groups of up to 14 carbon atoms (not necessarily the same in any given molecule), preferably octyl or nonyl groups. p, p'-Dioctyldiphenylamine is particularly effective. Other suitable alkylated aromatic or araliphatic amines are, for. B. the mono- and di C1- to C14-alkylphenyinaphthylamines, phenothiazines, iminodibenzyls and diphenylphenylenediamines, especially those in which the alkyl groups are octyl or nonyl groups.
For best results, however, it is desirable to use a two component antioxidant made up of a mixture (1) of an alkylated phenylnaphthylamine, especially a mono- or di-C1 to C14 alkylphenylnaphthylamine, e.g. a mono- or dioctyl- or a mono- or dinonylphenylnaphthylamine, and (2) an alkylated diphenylamine, in particular a mono- or di-C1- to C14-alkyldiphenylamine, e.g. B. a dioctyl or dinonyl diphenylamine.
When using this combination, it is preferred to add 0.5 to 4.5, and especially 0.5 to 3.5% by weight of component (1) and 0.5 to 5.0 and especially, in the composition for lubricating 1.5 to 4.0% by weight of component (2) should be used. Most preferably, the weight of component (2) is 1 to 10, and especially 2 to 4 times the weight of component (1). The alkylated diphenylamine is used for its cleanliness and long-lasting quality. p, p'-dioctyldiphenylamine is particularly preferred. The effectiveness of the alkylated diphenylamine antioxidants in accelerated oxidation attempts is increased by an alkylated phenylnaphthylamine, preferably a monooctylphenylnaphthylamine.
The combination proved to be very satisfactory for controlling the increase in viscosity in the oxidation test and leads to only insignificant sludge deposits.
The copper passivators
The copper passivators are a well-known class of materials whose function is to reduce the extent to which copper is attacked by corrosive substances. The copper passivator used in the composition according to the invention must of course be soluble in the base material. The effect of this additive is to reduce corrosion in engine component materials that are exposed to the lubricant for long periods of time at high temperature and in the presence of air. The effectiveness of metal passivators can be determined using the oxidation / corrosion tests described above.
Copper is the most critical metal in such attempts; it has been found that if this metal can be effectively passivated, the corrosion of the other present metals, with the exception of lead, is so minor that it can be neglected. Suitable classes of copper passivators include:
1. Those of the azole type, such as. B. imidazole, pyrazole, triazole and their derivatives, e.g. B. benzotriazole, methylbenzotriazole, ethylbenzotriazole, butylbenzotriazole, dodecylbenzotriazole, methylenebis-benzotriazole, and naphthotriazole.
2. Salicylaldehyde semicarbazone and their C1 to C20 alkyl derivatives, e.g. B. Methyl- and isopropylsalicylic aidehydsemicarbazon.
3. Condensation products of salicylaldehyde and hydrazine derivatives, and fatty acid salts of such condensation products. A particularly suitable hydrazine derivative is aminoguanidine and suitable fatty acids are those having 2 to 24 carbon atoms.
Particularly effective copper passivators are Me thylenis-benzotn.azol and salts of 1-salicylalaminoguanidine and fatty acids with 13 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. B. palmitic acid. If the lubricant is to be used in engines containing copper alloy components, it is desirable to add a lead corrosion inhibitor to the mixture.
The stress additives
In the compositions according to the invention, a three-component stress additive system is used, namely a main stress additive (additive (c) above) and two intensifying additives ((d) and (e) above). Very high loading capacity can be achieved using large concentrations of major loading additive, but beyond a certain point this leads to an unacceptable increase in viscosity in oxidation tests. A high load capacity in combination with satisfactory oxidation test results can be achieved by keeping the concentration of the main load additive within the limits given above and adding very small amounts of the two intensifying additives (d) and (e).
The phosphite additive (e), when used alone at the indicated low concentrations, gives insufficient improvement to the loading properties of the lubricating compositions and becomes corrosive at higher concentrations. However, it has been found that very low levels of phosphite additive (s) have a synergistic effect on the major stress additive, and this combination is effective for most purposes. It was also found that the further addition of a very small amount of the dialkyl hydrogen phosphate additive (d) further increases the loading properties of the mixture in loading tests carried out at high temperature (200 OC), as specified by an aircraft turbine manufacturer.
Tritolyl phosphate is the preferred stress additive (c), but triphenyl phosphate, phenyl / tolyl phosphate, trixylyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate and tricyclohexyl phosphate are also effective.
If desired, a very small amount (up to 25 parts per million) of an antifoam agent, e.g. B.
a silicone incorporated into the composition.

The compositions were tested for oxidative stability, corrosion resistance, toughness and cleanliness using tests of the type specified in government and engine manufacturer regulations for lubricants to be used in the turbines of supersonic jet aircraft.
Attempt to determine oxidation and corrosion
This test was carried out as already described, a temperature of 218 ° C. and a test duration of 48 hours being used and the air being blown through at a rate of 5 liters per hour.
The results are given in Table 3 below, which also gives the desired limits for oils of the type in question. Table 3 also shows the four commercially available oils P, Q, R and S for aircraft gas turbines that have been adopted on the basis of an American engine manufacturer specification containing this oxidation / corrosion test. The regulation applies to a type 2 turbine oil, i.e. an advanced type of aircraft turbine oil, and its oxidation and corrosion requirements (namely, a viscosity increase of not more than 50% and changes in metal weight of + 0.3 to -0.3 mg / cm 2) are very severe.
The table shows that the results obtained with oils A to H can advantageously be compared with the results obtained with oils P, Q, R and S and that the first-mentioned oils are cleaner.
In addition, Oils A through H have a much higher load capacity than Oils P through S, and Oils A through H are intended to meet the current requirements of the latest British regulations for advanced aircraft turbine oils, which require a much higher load capacity than the American regulation or at least get close to them. The only other known oils which meet the load requirements of these UK regulations are those described in UK Patent No. 1,180,388. An example of such an oil is Composition L of Table 3 (which corresponds to Composition B).
Composition L meets both the exposure and oxidation / corrosion requirements of the British regulations, but is outside the oxidation / corrosion limits of the American regulations, while oils A to H are well within these limits.

In this test, an oil sample was held at 190 cc for 5 hours with a copper plate inserted therein and air being blown through at a rate of 28 liters per hour. A lead plate was rotated in the oil and its weight loss measured after the experiment. Oil of the type in question is considered good in this regard if it results in a weight loss not exceeding 1.0 mg / cm2.
With composition A the weight loss was 0.31 mg / cm2., Test to determine the load capacity
The load capacity of the compositions for lubricating A and H was determined by the known test with the transmission device IAE, in which a series of transmissions is sprayed with the oil to be tested at certain elevated temperatures and the transmissions are started at a certain speed while a load is applied. The load at which the gears start to churn is recorded. The results can be found in Table 4 below. Oils B, C, D and G were tested on the basis of a simplified embodiment of the test with the transmission device IAE, in which the oils are simply sufficient or insufficient.
All oils have passed this test, which shows that their loading properties are similar to those of Oil A. Oils A, B, C, D, G and H meet or approximate the very stringent current exposure requirements of the latest UK regulations for advanced turbine lubricants for supersonic transport aircraft.
These load requirements are above those of the already mentioned American regulation for an oil type 2, on the basis of which the oils P, Q, R and S were accepted. No oil has currently (July 1967) been accepted due to British regulations.
