The invention relates to a tool unit for forming flat material, consisting of two tool plates, each of which can be bent around the shell of a roller and cooperating projections and recesses for forming the flat material during the run have between the tool plates attached to the rollers, as well as a process for their production.
So that such a tool unit effects the desired reshaping of the flat material, the projections and recesses provided for this purpose on the two tool plates must fit together, even after they have been bent around the rollers. However, the problem arises that the tool plates that work together expand differently when they are bent around the rollers, so that they no longer fit one another exactly during the forming process. It has therefore been practically impossible to date to produce such tool plates in a flat state and then to bend them around the rollers.
In the case of a tool unit of the type mentioned at the outset, this difficulty is overcome according to the invention in that the tool plates are designed in such a way that their cooperating projections and recesses fit onto one another after being bent around the rollers.
This design of the tool unit can compensate for the expansion characteristics of both tool plates when bending around the rollers, so that the existing in the flat state certain mutual position of the projections and recesses is retained even after bending around the rollers.
In an advantageous further development of the invention, the tool unit can be provided with recesses which do not deform the flat material, and also with projections which do not deform the flat material. Appropriately, the recesses can be equally deep.
The tool unit can advantageously be designed in such a way that the projections which do not deform the flat material have a height which is at least equal to the thickness of the flat material.
A tool unit in which the one tool plate is a patrix and the other tool plate is a die that has a groove, the patrix having a projection so that the flat material to be deformed is received by the groove, as well as a recess on the opposite one Sides of the front has to take on the to be deformed sheet material, and wherein the die tool has a recess on one side of the groove to receive the sheet material and to form a projection between the recess and the groove, can be designed ,
that the male mold parallel to the groove in the recesses has a projection that does not permanently deform the flat material.
A method for producing such a tool unit, in which so much material is removed from the surfaces of the flat tool plates that the cooperating projections and recesses are formed, is characterized according to the invention in that further material is removed in order not to be involved in the forming of the Flat goods involved projections and recesses to form until their cooperating, the flat material deforming projections and recesses after bending around the rollers fit together.
Advantageously, the material can be removed on one side of one tool plate anywhere except for the areas where the projections necessary for permanent deformation are provided, which serve as die elements, and the material can be removed on one side of the other tool plate down to the areas where projections which are necessary for permanent deformation and which serve as male mold elements and which are not involved in the permanent deformation are provided which run parallel to the female mold projections.
Furthermore, it can be useful for the material of each tool plate to be removed to a constant depth in order to produce tool plates with a base part of constant thickness and projections of constant height.
The projections and recesses causing permanent deformation of the flat material are to be referred to briefly in the description as functional, while the projections and recesses or areas which do not cause permanent deformation are to be referred to as non-functional.
The invention will then be explained in more detail, for example with reference to figures. The figures show: FIG. 1 a partial section through the interacting cylinders for deforming flat material.

The invention will now be described on the basis of tools for cutting out and folding flat material for the manufacture of a cardboard container blank, for example a container for frozen food. It can be seen that the innovation can also be used for tools for the separate implementation of these processing operations as well as for tools for performing similar Licher deformations of flat goods.
The deformations of the flat material are carried out by passing between cooperating rotary cylinders (0 and tl. The cylinders 10 and 11 (FIG. 1) have cooperating tools 12 and 13 which lie tightly against the surface of the cylinder and form a line deforming the material in order to deform flat material passing through between the cylinders. The flat material can have the shape of a continuous band or the shape of individual flat pieces that are processed one after the other. In the preferred exemplary embodiment, the tools are etched flexible plates which are bent around the cylinders and secured at their opposite ends, the cylinders having spaces 10a and 11a in which means are provided for securing the tool plates to the cylinders.
The device for fastening the tool plates to the cylinders does not belong to the invention, so that for the sake of simplicity in Fig. 1 the plates are connected at their ends to the cylinder by bolts 14 which run through the plates and into the adjacent side wall of the cylinder the gap are screwed in. The cylinder 10 is a flat material-carrying cylinder and has grippers 15 in the intermediate space 10a that grasp this material, which grasp the leading edge of the flat material to be processed and transport it through the deformation line between the cylinders 10 and 11.
When the cylinder is rotated, conventional feed or transport cylinders can be used to feed the flat material to the cylinder 10, and a conventional receiving cylinder can be used to pick up and deliver the deformed material from the cylinder 10.
In the illustrated embodiment, the Plat th 12 and 13 are flexible plates that have cooperating elements that deform the flat material, in particular for cutting and folding the material. In the case of the tools shown, the cutting of the material along a given line is effected by tearing it off by compressing the material along the line between the elements that deform the material.
When tearing off, the flat material is pressed together by the tools along the dividing line, while one tool on one side of the line is stepped inwards by at least the thickness of the flat material in order to create a clearance for the material on this side of the line, and the other tool on the other side of the dividing line is stepped inwardly in order to increase the goods on this side of the line. Fig. 2 shows the principle of tearing with flat tools 20 and 21 for cutting ent long a single line that extends transversely to the tool, that is, transversely to its direction of movement on the cylinder.
The tool 20 has an outer step 20a on one side of the dividing line and a step 20b on the opposite side of the line, which is offset inwardly from the outer step by at least the thickness of the flat material. The tool 21 has an outer step 21a opposite the inner step 20b and thus overlaps the outer step 20a along the dividing line, so that the material is pressed together in the area of the top lap.
The tear-cutting overlap is preferably a maximum of 0.0125 cm (0.005 inches). The outer steps of the tools are usually separated on the deformation line by a gap of 0.005-0.0l cm (0.002 to 0.004 inches).
The tool 21 also has an inner step 21b opposite the outer step 20a of the tool 20, and the step <B> 21b </B> has a depth which is at least equal to the thickness of the flat material. When the goods are compressed by the tools along the dividing line, the goods on one side of the dividing line are picked up by the inner step of one tool and the goods on the other side of the dividing line are picked up by the inner step of the other tool.
The parts of the outer steps of the tools 20 and 21 that do not overlap have practically no function, which is why these outer steps can be cut away, as indicated by dashed lines in Fig. 2, so that the separating elements of the tools actually form the projections 20c and 21c ( Fig. 3), which protrude from the bottom of the tool plate and have a height that is at least equal to the thickness of the material. Furthermore, if part of the outer step 21a of the tool 21 is removed, the inner step 20b of the tool 20 can be seen with a projection 23 if desired, which is opposite to the cut-away outer step (Fig. 3).
This projection has an influence on the deformation of the good.
When deforming flat material for the manufacture of blanks such as cardboard blanks, it is desirable to score the blank along lines that run perpendicular to the parting line that runs in the longitudinal direction of the tools. In such a case, the male mold is provided with projections or outer steps which extend from the inner step 20b and generally perpendicular to the shoulder between the inner step 20b and the outer step 20a. Such a tool is shown in perspective in FIG. 6 and in section in FIG. 7 with a cooperating tool.
The tools in Fig. 6 and 7 and their parts have the same reference characters as the tools in Fig. 2, since the tools are basically the same, except for the additional projections 24a and 24b. According to FIG. 7, the outer step 21a of the tool 21 must be cut out along the projections 24a and 24b. These recesses 25 and 26 are shown above the projections 24a and 24b.
The recesses 25 and 26 in the outer step 21a of the tool 21 are necessary so that the outer step 21a has a section 27 which overlaps the projection 24a and a section 28 which overlaps the projection 24b, the tool provided with a recess being a Has shoulder that delimits the overlapping section and also serves as a space for receiving the flat material in the tool 21 on one side of the dividing line. In Fig. 7, the recesses in the tool 21 are arranged to the right of the jumps 24a and 24b before. It can be seen that the recesses can be arranged on both sides of the projections 24a and 24b.
Here, too, the outer step of the tool 21 can additionally be cut off along the dashed lines in FIG. 7 without the function of the tool 21 being impaired. It can be seen, however, that the cut-off parts indicated by the dashed lines do not extend into the functional part of the tool which is necessary to form the projection 21c.
The tools can be made to both cut and fold. Fig. 4 shows two flat tools 30 and 31, which can undertake such processing of flat material. Tools 30 and 31 are similar to tools 20 and 21. The tool 30 has an outer and an inner step 30a and 30b, which are opposite the inner steps 31b and 31a of the tool 31, the outer steps overlapping along the parting line in order to effect a tear. The inner step 31b, however, has a projection 33 which protrudes outwardly therefrom along the fold line and can be brought into congruence with a recess or groove 34 in the outer step 31a in order to press the goods into the groove.
The projection 33 protrudes outward only up to the level of the outer step of the tool 30, while the groove 34 has a depth that is at least equal to the thickness of the flat material, so that the flat material can be bent around the projection 33. The play between each side of the groove 34 and the projection 33 preferably has the thickness of the flat material. It can be seen that the groove 34 is formed in the tool with the outer step on the fold line and that the projection is formed on the tool that has the inner step on the fold line.
Even if a folding is to be carried out, the outer stage of the tool 31 can be cut off as shown in dashed lines in Fig. 4 and has already been explained in connection with Fig. 2, as long as projections 35, 36 (Fig. 5) remain to limit the opposite sides of the groove 34 and to press the flat material around the projection 33 when the tools come together. The projections 35 and 36 then delimit the groove 34, that is to say the die element for folding, while the projection 33 forms the male element.
It will therefore be seen that the tools can be formed so that the projections protrude along the parting line and cooperate with projections on the cooperating tool which are offset against it and that for folding the male element like the projection project from the base of the tools can, while the matrix element may consist of several separate parallel projections conditions to limit a groove that can be brought ge with the projection of the male element to cover.
It will also be seen that certain areas of the tools, which may be called non-functional areas, are present and can optionally be removed or left unchanged without affecting the function of the cutting or folding tool.
The flat tools 30 and 31 (Fig. 4) could not be placed around a cylinder and bring their ele ments together, since the outer surface of each tool expands differently when it is placed around a cylinder. When the tools are placed around their associated cylinder, the end position of the well-deforming elements on the outer surface and relative to one another depends on this extent. For this reason, such cooperating tools have so far not been formed in the plane and then curved or bent into the desired position.
Investigations have shown that in the case of the tools 30 and 31 (FIG. 4) the elements would not come into congruence with one another if the tools were bent around the cooperating cylinders of a machine which deforms flat material. Since the expansion of the outer surface of the tools and the displacement of the good-forming elements take place in the circumferential direction of the cylinder, this misalignment would not be too critical if the cutting or folding were done along lines perpendicular to the leading and trailing edges of the tool unless the cutting or folding should not be done along the entire extent of the line.
But it will be difficult if the lines as a whole tend to stretch across the cylinder rather than in its circumferential direction. Any displacement of the interacting elements relative to one another can, if the cut or fold lines run transversely to the cylinder, have the effect that the separating elements do not intersect and the folding elements cut instead of folding. According to the innovation, however, the tools are designed in such a way that the elements that deform the flat material do not come out of their mutual coincidence when they are bent around cylinders of the same diameter.
In order to achieve this, non-functional sections of the tool such as the sections of the outer steps 30a and 3l a are removed in order to compensate for the cross-sectional areas of the tools. If the tools have essentially the same cross-sectional area in the bending direction, any displacement of the elements is essentially the same and the elements that deform the product remain in congruence. So if the tools are made of flexible material, they can be bent from a flat position, which can for example be the position in which the tool plates are provided with their deforming elements, around cylinders of the same diameter, without the covering of the good deforming elements is lost.
The tool material can be removed by etching or by another suitable method, for example mechanically or chemically. If the tools have been made according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, they have uniform base parts with substantially the same thickness and projections for separating and folding th, which start from the base parts, the cross-sectional areas of the tools are kept essentially the same so the well-deforming elements overlap when the tools are bent around the corresponding cylinder.
8 and 10 tools 12 and 13 are forms abge. The cardboard blank produced by the tools 12 and 13 is used to produce food containers. The male mold 12 has a continuously closed projection 41 which delimits the outline of the cardboard blank, which is generally rectangular, and there are also separating projections 41a-d on the corresponding sides. The projection 41a defines the leading edge of the cardboard blank and lies along the leading edge of the tool, while the projection 41c lies along the trailing edge of the tool.
The area of the tool outside the projection 41 is normally the outer step of the tool and is etched away, as can be seen from FIG. 9, in order to match the cross-sectional area of this tool with the tool 13. The tool 12 also has a plurality of folding projections which extend therefrom to define the top, bottom and back of the carton. The top, back and bottom side surfaces lie side by side in the interior of the area defined by the closed projection 41 (FIG. 8).
The top of the carton is delimited by folding protrusions 45 and 46 of the male element, which run parallel to the front and rear edges of the tool, and by folding protrusions 47 and 48 of the male tool, which run between the folding protrusions 45 and 46 at its opposite ends. The projection 45 is located in the vicinity of the before jump 41 a and to this inward.
The back of the carton is bounded by folding projections including projection 46 and a male projection 50, which runs parallel to it on the side remote from projection 45, as well as male projections 51 and 52 which extend between projections 46 and 50 at the opposite end thereof .
The bottom of the carton is defined by the folding tab 50 and a male folding tab 54 which is parallel to but separate from the tab 50 and by male tabs 55 and 56 which extend between the tabs 50 and 54 at the opposite end of the tab. The area of the tool between the folding projection 54 and the adjacent separating projection 41c forms the front of the carton, while the male folding projections 60 and 61 extend from the opposite ends of the folding projection 54 to the adjacent separating projection 41c.
The end sides of the carton are delimited by the surfaces outside the folding projections 47, 51 and 55 along one side of the tool and outside the folding projections 48, 52 and 56 along the other side of the tool. Separating projections 62-64 form extensions at both ends of the folding projections 46, 50 and 5.1 in the area that corresponds to the end face of the carton, so that the carton blank is slit along this line so that the end faces downwards and upwards from the top and bottom side of the carton and foldable inward from the back of the carton.
The associated die tool 13 is shown in Fig. 10 and has separating projections that correspond to the separating projections of the male mold, but are offset from these in the manner already explained with reference to tools 20 and 21 and 30 and 31, and female projections that have the folding projections of the patrix tool work together to fold the flat material. The folding projections of the die tool and the dividing lines have the same reference symbols as the corresponding projections of the male tool and an additional line.
The outer step of the die tool would normally be provided within the outer edge of a separating projection the tool is provided with separating projections 62'-64 ', certain areas within the boundary formed by the projection 41' must be cut off for functional reasons in order for the cutting can be carried out on the projections 62'-64 ', as has already been explained with reference to the tools shown in FIGS. 6 and 7.
From Figs. 8 and 10 it can be seen that all Ge areas of these tools with the exception of those Ge areas have been etched away, the functional, well-ver forming elements form. If the fold lines run in such a way that the female mold does not have the same cross-sectional area as the male mold, so that its expansion characteristic is different from that of the male mold working together when it is placed around a cylinder, then it can be seen that various non-functional Areas of the male tool do not need to be removed.
Before jumps outside the limit can be retained to compensate for the expansion characteristics of the tools, since these are also non-functional areas of the male tool, or the width of the separation projection can be increased, as shown by dashed lines in FIG to compensate for additional material in the die tool because of the double projections that form the die sections of the tool.
Similarly, protrusions can also be provided in areas of the male tool where the female tool has been etched away. For example, protrusions 70 (dashed) could be added. Although the projections are normally arranged in the functional area of the die tool, the opposite area of the die tool, which is a non-functional area, has been etched away so that the flat material only around the projections into the gap created by the die tool is bent.
Therefore, the flat material is not deformed in these areas. Preferably, however, the identical projections are left in areas that are purely non-functional areas of the tool. If the areas of the female tool that are opposite to an area of the male tool that is normally a functional area since it receives the material are etched away, the area of the male tool becomes non-functional.
It can be seen, however, that the projections in these non-functional areas end shortly before the folding projections 45, 46 etc. because of the etching away of the die tool, so that a separation does not take place between these projections and the folding projections. Furthermore, the expansion can be compensated for by deeper etching of the die tool compared to the male die tool. If the die tool is etched deeper than necessary for functional reasons, the additional depth means the removal of a non-functional area.
As already mentioned, the material can be removed from the tool by a conventional method that is used to produce raised printing plates. In this method, the plate, which is preferably twice as thick as the flat material to be deformed, is coated with an etch-resistant, lichtemp-sensitive material that can be hardened under intense lighting. A film with transparent lines corresponding to the projections to be formed on the plate is arranged over the plate with the coating on, and light is projected through the transparent lines. The light-sensitive material is cured in the areas exposed to the light and adheres to the tool surface of the plate.
The uncured portions of the photosensitive material that have not been exposed to light are then washed or otherwise removed and an etchant is applied to the tool surface of the platen.
Since the hardened areas of the photosensitive material are etch-resistant, only those areas that are not covered by the hardened photosensitive material are etched away. Preferably, a tool plate with a base part of substantially uniform thickness is produced by the etching, from which the projections extend, which form the elements that deform the good. In the preferred method, the plate is approximately twice as thick as the sheet material to be deformed, and the etching of the tool surface to a depth which corresponds essentially to the thickness of the sheet material results in a plate whose base is approximately as thick as that Is protrusions.
It has been recognized that such a steel plate can be bent satisfactorily even if the flat product to be processed is cardboard, as is used, for example, for the production of cardboard boxes for frozen food, the sheet having a thickness of about 0.040 cm (0.016 inches).
It can therefore be seen that the innovation provides a method for the production of tool plates that are to be placed around the cylinder of a flat material forming machine. By driving according to the innovation, the tools can be produced in the plane and then bent around the cylinder and attached to it. The elements of the tools which shape the flat material are kept in congruence during the bending, provided that the plates and cylinders are bent with essentially the same dimensions.
Although the cylinders are preferably of the same dimensions, if the cylinders are to have different dimensions, the cross-sectional surfaces of the tools can be related in such a way that the correct expansion characteristics of the tools are obtained when they are bent around the cylinders on which they are to be used, so that the elements deforming the flat material on the tools remain correctly in cover.
