Wird ein solches erfindungsgemässes Mittel auf eine eisüberzogene Metalloberfläche aufgebracht, z.B. auf Teile einer eingefrorenen Eisenbahnweiche oder eines vereisten Gleiswechsels, kommt die gefrierpunkterniedri- gende Lösung in der geschlossenen Phase (dem Disper- sionsmittel) unmittelbar mit dem Eis in Berührung, bringt es zum Schmelzen und wird dabei verdünnt;

In gewissen Fällen ist erwünscht, die Konsistenz (Dichte) des erfindungsgemäs- sen Mittels so einzustellen, dass diesem durch Disper- gieren von Gas-(Luft)-Bläschen durch deren Verwirbe- lung mittels eines Wirbelstromes eine zusätzliche disper- se Phase überlagert wird, wodurch man eine schaumar tige Masse geringer Dichte, aber hoher Formbeständig- keit erhält;
Antifreeze and de-icing agent The invention relates to an antifreeze and de-icing agent, preferably to prevent icing or to de-icing frozen railway switches and track changes in which the mobility of the metal parts is impaired by icing.
The antifreeze and deicing agents according to the invention can also be used in other mechanical Einrichtun conditions or parts of the equipment that must be able to work at low temperatures, such as in ship winches, mechanical Einrichtun conditions in cold stores and. Like. More, on the one hand to prevent icing and for simultaneous lubrication, and on the other hand also for de-icing.
It has been known for years and is common practice to deice ice railway switches and track changes using water-soluble agents that lower the freezing point of the water and the dissolved substances below the ambient temperatures that occur. The freezing point of an aqueous solution of equal amounts of such agents is reduced in inverse proportion to the associated molecular weight of the substance used. In order to be able to carry out this de-icing economically, the substances used must be cheap and have the lowest possible molecular weight.
The most well-known of the substances commonly used here is sodium chloride in the form of table salt dendrites; But there are also other cheap materials, e.g. Urea and calcium chloride, usage.
In such known de-icing methods, the disadvantage must be accepted that at the moment when the ice has melted, the solution pours over the threshold (the thresholds) into the bedding surrounding this, which means that when water again deposits on the metal of the switch (of the change), for example due to frost, snow, condensation or rain, the points (change) freeze up again very quickly and thus lose their ability to move or this is impaired, namely now at normal freezing temperature of the water. In addition, the duration of the effectiveness of such known antifreeze agents is a maximum of 4 hours.
In such known methods, further difficulties arise from the fact that when the switches are icy (iced switches) lubricating oil or grease is scraped or scraped away by the ice crystals when the switch parts are moved, or when such switches (track changes) are thawed , the effectiveness of the lubricant is worsened, either by salt acting as a deicing agent or by a rise in the ambient temperature.
This destruction of the lubricant layer, together with the corrosive effect of the cheap substances usually used, leads to the formation of layers of rust on the surface of the previously carefully smoothed, sliding switch or track change parts, which in turn affects the signalman when the switches or track changes are operated Difficulties arise.
The invention is based on the object of producing an anti-freeze and de-icing agent that has none of the aforementioned disadvantages of known agents and allows points (track changes) for a period of at least one day between successive inspections by the operating company safety responsible switchman, but to keep clear of ice for at least 18 hours.
The American patent no. 2 948 625 has made known an anti-freeze liquid that is preferably used for aircraft use and consists of a carefully weighed water-in-oil emulsion in which the closed phase or
the dispersant consists of a long-chain fatty acid ester or half-ester dissolved in white oil (in particular sorbitol-oleic acid half-ester sorbitan sesquioleate (sorbit sesqui oleate)), and the disperse phase consists of a deicing liquid, namely an aqueous solution of lithium chloride with small Additions of carboxymethyl cellulose to increase the toughness (viscosity),
as well as an imidoxide serving as a vapor phase protection agent for copper and an alkyl of a quaternary ammonium salt as a corrosion inhibitor. This liquid deicing agent is said to have the effect that the oil film normally surrounding the deicing liquid therein is unstable.
This oil film often becomes discontinuous, i.e. it tears or breaks open, and thus allows the deicing liquid to come into contact with any layer of ice: the ice is melted by lowering the freezing point of the water, and a mixture of melted ice and The liquid that forms then forms a liquid film between the surface of the aircraft and the ice coating. It is then easily possible, as explained in the US patent specification, to lift off the ice coating or to brush it off the surface.
In contrast, the deicing agent according to the invention is formed by a stable, non-ionized or cationic oil-in-water emulsion, in which a non-corrosive, aqueous solution of a freezing point-lowering substance in the closed phase (the dispersant) and a fat or Oil is present in the disperse phase, at least one of the two components of the emulsion having surface capillary-active properties,
which reduce the surface tension at the contact surfaces between the two phases.
If such an agent according to the invention is applied to an ice-coated metal surface, e.g. on parts of a frozen railway switch or an icy change of track, the freezing-point lowering solution comes into direct contact with the ice in the closed phase (the dispersant), causes it to melt and is diluted in the process;
at the same time, part of the oil (fat) contained in the disperse phase of the emulsion according to the invention can reach the metal surface, adhere there as a result of the action of the surface-active (capillary-active) substances and act as a deposit in the form of a lubricating and protective film. The emulsion according to the invention remains stable, and the action of the freezing point lowering substance prevents the formation of any ice layers in the emulsion according to the invention within the temperature range to be expected in the moderate and subpolar zone.
The emulsion according to the invention, when applied to a metal surface before the frost causing the freezing occurs, acts both as an anti-freeze and de-icing agent. If the temperature falls below the freezing point of the water, the emulsion according to the invention behaves like a lubricant; if the presence of snow, fog, frost or the like
a water deposit forms, e.g. In the form of snow flakes, ice crystals, or in the form of an icing condensate, only a slight dilution of the closed phase or the dispersant in the emulsion according to the invention is effected, which in turn enables the emulsion to be effective as an effective lubricant over a period of several days remains.
The emulsion according to the invention can be produced either as a non-ionized emulsion or as a cationic emulsion, because an anionic emulsion generally acts like a detergent and would prevent the fat (oil) from sticking to the metal surface.
A non-ionic, surface-active emulsifier such as diethylene glycol monostearate can be used. To further improve the adhesion of the fat or oil to the metal surface, a cation-active substance, for example alkyl trimethyl ammonium chloride or alkyl propylene diamine dioleate, can be added.
In order to improve the retention properties when the anti-freeze and de-icing agent according to the invention is used on metal surfaces, without impairing its freezing point lowering effect, a cellulose compound, e.g. Sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, incorporated who the.
Such a connection swells with the absorption of water, while at the same time maintaining the toughness (viscosity) of the de-icing agent unchanged, so that this connection helps to ensure proper adhesion of the agent to the metal surface.
In order to impart thixotropic properties or flow behavior to the agent according to the invention, in order to ensure better distribution and better adhesion to smooth metallic sliding surfaces, high-polymer substances, e.g. B. poly-isobutylene, and / or other connec tions, such as polyethylene glycol, glycerine, hy drated castor oil or sugar residues od. Like. More, are installed.
As the freezing point lowering agent in the closed phase of the deicing and antifreeze agent according to the invention, a salt is preferably used which has both a corrosion-inhibiting and non-corrosive effect and has a low molecular weight.
Sodium nitrite is an example of this; its effectiveness in terms of lowering the freezing point can be compared to that of ordinary salt or urea, and at the same time it is corrosion-inhibiting; it can be used either alone or in conjunction with cheaper material such as the last two materials mentioned above.
In the disperse phase, a naphthenic crude oil is preferably used, which is cheap and remains effective even if other constituents of the emulsion are eliminated over time under normal weather conditions.
Suspensions of solid particles made of lubricious material, for example graphite or molybdenum disulfide (e.g. in colloidal form), can also be introduced into the disperse phase so that these solid particles are deposited on the metal surface as an adherent coating after other constituents have parts in a similar manner are eliminated. On the other hand, fats or oils can be used according to the wishes or requirements in each case.
In order to prevent drying out during storage, a moistening material such as sorbitol, for example, can be incorporated into the emulsion according to the invention.
A few examples of anti-freeze and defrosting agents according to the invention are described in more detail below, without this being intended to restrict the essence of the invention. The means described for example were developed for use to thaw railway switches and track changes, but they can also be used for other mechanical equipment or facilities or for parts of facilities that are exposed to the action of frost.

In order to be able to adjust the viscosity or toughness of the emulsion better, between 1 and 10% of cetyl alcohol (hexadecanol) can be added to the disperse phase.
Instead of alkyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, however, another cation-active compound can also be used, e.g. an alkyl propylene diamine dioleate or other fatty acid salts of aliphatic amines.

The tough and strong constituents of the emulsion according to the invention be written give this water a consistency (density) that greatly facilitates their use and ensures that they remain firmly in place after their application, over a period of at least one day between each other the subsequent inspections by the attendant responsible for maintaining the points, i.e. over a period of 18 hours or more.
All of the substances and components described above are not or hardly inflammable and do not give off any inflammable vapors; No solid particles settle on the surfaces treated with it. If the presence of solid particles is permissible or even desired for certain cases, benton or activated silicates, for example, can be incorporated into the emulsion to adjust or improve the thixotropy of the emulsion.
Deicing and frost protection agents according to the invention can also be stored for long periods of time where the outside temperatures fluctuate within very wide limits. The toughness (viscosity) of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, as well as both the suction and swelling properties it has, prevent its demulsification. Instead of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, however, sodium alginate, for example, can also be used to achieve the desired toughness (viscosity).
Hydroxy-ethyl cellulose, gelatin, or other compounds with a similar protein or cellulose structure, but also starch or starch derivatives can be used.
The consistency (density) of the agent according to the invention can be changed in such a way that a low-viscosity agent or a paste is obtained, so that the agent can be sprayed on, brushed on or e.g. can be applied using an oil can or grease gun; Such changes in the consistency of the agent according to the invention can be achieved by varying the proportion of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose or equivalent compounds and the amount and, if necessary, the particle size of the fat (oil).
In certain cases it is desirable to adjust the consistency (density) of the agent according to the invention in such a way that an additional dispersed phase is superimposed on it by dispersing gas (air) bubbles through their swirling by means of an eddy current, whereby a foam-like mass of low density but high dimensional stability is obtained;
this foam-like mass from the antifreeze and de-icing agent according to the invention can then be applied to a blanket of snow or a layer of snow that covers a switch or a track change.
Foaming and setting the required or desired properties of this mass can be improved by incorporating further capillary-active substances, proteins or saponins. Foams produced in this way of the antifreeze and de-icing agent according to the invention rest as cover layers on the snow due to their low density and their high dimensional stability, such foam-like layers due to the presence of cellulose, starch or egg:
veiss - (- protein) compounds withstand destruction very well, so that there is no risk of them tearing open.
