Process for the production of threads, fibers or foils by melt spinning of linear
Polyesters or mixed polyesters
The invention relates to a process for the discontinuous or continuous production of threads, fibers or films by melt spinning of linear polyesters or mixed polyesters, which are formed in the presence of phosphorus compounds by transesterification or esterification and / or polycondensation from aromatic p-dicarboxylic acids or their esters and glycols or alkylene oxides have been obtained with the addition of other dicarboxylic acids or their esters or from glycol esters of aromatic p-dicarboxylic acids.
Both the discontinuous and the continuous production of linear polyesters from aromatic p-dicarboxylic acid esters and glycols is known.
It is also known that both aromatic p-dicarboxylic acids and glycols or alkylene oxides and the glycol esters of aromatic p-dicarboxylic acids are used as starting products for the production of linear polyesters.
The modification of the polyesters by using the addition of other dicarboxylic acids or their esters is also known.
It is also known to carry out the transesterification and polycondensation in the presence of suitable catalysts or catalyst mixtures which do not promote the thermal degradation of the polyesters or mixed polyesters.
To improve the whiteness and to increase the thermal stability, phosphorus compounds can be added before or during the polycondensation.
According to the known processes, no absolutely thermally and glycolytically stable intermediate or
End products obtained in the form of the melts or the solidified and comminuted melts on an industrial scale. Even polyesters that are manufactured using phosphorus compounds are not characterized on a large-scale technical scale by no absolute thermal and glycolytic stability.
For example, with such a stabilized and condensed batch, the relative viscosity of the granulate is 1.40, while the spun material has a relative viscosity of 1.37.
The thermal degradation of, for example, polyethylene terephthalate is accompanied by the formation of unpleasant fission products such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, acetaldehyde and terephthalic acid. The damage to the polyester occurs predominantly in the course of the polycondensation with a constant increase in the number of carboxyl groups in the polyester as a result of the opposing equilibrium reactions that are taking hold.
The process according to the invention is based on the object of producing absolutely thermally and glycolytically stable linear polyesters or mixed polyesters with improved properties on an industrial scale.
The inventive method for producing threads, fibers or films by melt spinning of linear polyesters or mixed polyesters, which in the presence of phosphorus compounds by transesterification or esterification and / or polycondensation of aromatic p-dicarboxylic acids or their esters and glycols or alkylene oxide with the addition of other dicarboxylic acids or their esters or from glycol esters of aromatic p-dicarboxylic acids are obtained by spinning linear polyesters which have a relative viscosity tailored to the end product, measured in a solution of 100 mg of the polyester or mixed polyester in 20 ccm of one made of equal parts by weight existing solvent mixture of phenol and S-tetrachloroethane, from 1.25 to 1,
50 and have a carboxyl group content of less than 50 aqu./g g and which have been prepared using a catalyst mixture. The polyesters produced according to the invention or
Mixed polyesters can be processed into high-quality threads, fibers or films without difficulty.
The process described can be used when transesterification and polycondensation are carried out continuously and the melt is either discharged in a known manner, solidified and the solidified melt is comminuted and further processed in a known manner or is further processed directly without the involvement of a further processing stage.
The process can also be used when transesterification and polycondensation are discontinuous and the melt - as already described be - discharged in a known manner, made to solidify and the solidified melt is comminuted and further processed in a known manner.
The method also extends, for example, to cases in which the transesterification process is switched off, i.e. In other words, after grounding and / or polycondensation has taken place, the melt is either discharged again in a known manner, solidified and the solidified melt is comminuted and further processed in a known manner or is further processed directly without the involvement of a further process step.
The process described can be used specifically when using dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol or terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol or diglycol terephthalate.
An optimum effect is achieved if, for example, the transesterification process with the aid of one of the following catalyst mixtures of: a) Manganese-II acetate, cobalt-II acetate, an antimony compound, preferably antimony trioxide and a boron compound, preferably boron trioxide or b) manganese II- Acetate, cobalt-II acetate, a boron compound, preferably boron trioxide and a soluble titanium compound, preferably tetramethoxy titanium or c) manganese II acetate, cobalt II acetate, an antimony compound, preferably antimony trioxide and a soluble titanium compound, preferably teramethoxy titanium or d ) Manganese (II) acetate, cobalt (II) acetate and a boron compound, preferably boron trioxide or e) Cobalt (II) acetate, an antimony compound, preferably antimony trioxide and a soluble titanium compound, preferably tetramethoxy titanium or f)
Manganese II acetate, an antimony compound, preferably antimony trioxide and a soluble titanium compound, preferably teramethoxy titanium or g) an antimony compound, preferably antimotrioxide and a partially soluble titanium compound is carried out.
The technical progress of the process described consists in the fact that, compared to the known processes with regard to the production and processing temperatures, absolutely thermally and glycolytically stable polyesters or mixed polyesters can be produced, which allow their melting for a longer time either in a vacuum or in an inert gas Maintain atmosphere at the same viscosity.
As a result, the process allows the risk-free use of continuous processes with subsequent direct further processing of the melts.
The process also has positive effects on discontinuous processes in which the discharged, solidified and comminuted polyester or mixed polyester is further processed, such as B. with the help of the grate spinning process or the film casting or blow molding process. In the last-mentioned case, the polyesters or mixed polyesters do not suffer thermal and glycolytic degradation during their production or further processing, which would impair the quality of the end product.
The melt viscosities achieved with the process described allow the crushed polyesters or mixed polyesters to be processed at relatively low temperatures without any noticeable damage to the material.
The process makes it possible to produce polyesters or mixed polyesters in the form of threads, fibers, foils and the like in an extremely gentle manner, without undesirable side reactions such as glycolic ether formation or thermal and glycolytic degradation, with particularly high melting points and improved white content, low number of carboxyl groups and high strengths as well as other excellent textile technological values or
Properties.
The positive effects extend not only to the spinning or casting or blowing process, but also to the entire further processing of the spun, cast or blown threads, fibers, foils and the like.
With the help of the process it is, for example, easily possible to produce grain-free and lint-free polyester or mixed polyester silks with only a small number of thread breaks.
example
1000 kg of dimethyl terephthalate, 760 kg of ethylene glycol, with the addition of TiO2 as a matting agent and 0.05% of a catalyst mixture - based on DMT - are made from manganese (II) acetate, cobalt (II) acetate, antimony trioxide and tetramethoxy titanium in a diphenyl-heated vessel made of VA steel and provided with a stirrer. The transesterification is carried out in a temperature range of 150-2100 C in a nitrogen atmosphere, the methanol released is distilled off via a column. The excess glycol is then driven off at temperatures of 210-2400 C.
After: filtering and transferring the melt into a diphenyl-heated condensation vessel made of VA steel and equipped with a stirrer, 0.06 mol / o triphenyl phosphate is stirred into the melt. The precondensate is polycondensed under reduced pressure (below 1 Torr) at a temperature of 2800 C.
The polycondensation is terminated before the attainable, maximum degree of polycondensation at a KW value of 15. The polycondensation product has a relative viscosity of 1.35, a carbon xyl group content of 39 aqu. 100 g and a melting point of 2610 C. The viscosity of the spun silk is between 1.35-1.36. Thermal or glycolytic degradation did not take place.
The relative viscosity was determined with a solution of 100 mg of the polyester in 20 cmS of a mixture of phenol and tetrachloroethane consisting of equal parts by weight at 25 C using an Ostwald viscometer (capillary diameter 0.84?, 9 mm). The carboxyl group content is determined in a benzyl-alcoholic solution with benzyl-alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution. The polyethylene terephthalate is discharged in a known manner, made to solidify, comminuted and further processed. The spun silk is lint and grain free and has a whiteness of 75 0/0.
If the batch described above is not terminated but condensed out to the maximum, a polycondensation product is obtained with a relative viscosity of 1.45 and a carboxyl group content of 65 eq / 106 g. The viscosity of the spun silk is between 1.37-1.38. There was strong thermal degradation and thus damage to the fiber substance. The white content of the spun silk is 68 0/0.
