Process for the preparation of new organophosphorus compounds a
A new class of organophosphorus compounds has been found which can be incorporated into polyurethanes, with chemical bonding occurring. These are bis (hydroxypolyalkoxyalkyl) aminomethyl phosphonates of the formula
EMI1.1
where R and R 'are optionally substituted ethylene radicals, R2 and R3 are lower alkylene radicals, and m and m' are integers from 1 to 10.
Examples of these phosphonates are:
EMI1.2
EMI1.3
The production method of the new substances can be illustrated by the following reaction sequence:
EMI2.1
In the above formulas, Rz, R3, m and m 'have the same meanings as above and R, and Rs are hydrogen or an alkyl radical optionally substituted by chlorine.
In summary, it is first possible to condense phosphorous acid with a 1,2-epoxyalkane, optionally substituted with chlorine, or with two such epoxyalkanes. Then, according to the invention, the bis (hydroxypolyalkoxyalkyl) phosphonate obtained is mixed with formaldehyde and a dialkanolamine of the formula
EMI2.2
implemented.
As 1, 2-epoxyalkanes, for. B. in question: Ethylene oxide, 1,2-epoxpropane, epichlorohydrin (1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane), 1,2-epoxybutane, 1,2-epoxyoctane, 1,2-epoxydecane.
Usable amines for the inventive method are, for. B. 2,2'-iminodiethanol, 2,2'-imino-2-dipropanol, 6,6'-imino-1-dihexanol.
The reaction can be carried out at temperatures from 0 to 100.degree. C., preferably from 25 to 70.degree. To end the reaction, the reaction mixture is heated to 50 to 70 ° C. for about an hour after the starting materials have been added.
It is significant that the chlorine content of the product can be influenced by varying the ratio of epoxyalkane to chloroepoxyalkane in the preparation of the intermediate product. Products with a high chlorine content can be produced using only chloroepoxyalkane, or chlorine-free products if an unsubstituted epoxyalkane is condensed with the phosphorous acid.
The high hydroxyl content of the products according to the invention enables the production of high molecular weight polyurethanes by reaction with an organic isocyanate. The new compounds can serve as the sole polyols or in a mixture with other polyols. Since the new products are built into the polymer chain of the polyurethanes and extend it, they are not leached out of the polyurethane foam.
Example I Preparation of bis- (hydroxypolyethoxyethyl) -N, N -d i-ethanolanunometl2ylphasphonate
In a 1 liter three-necked reaction vessel equipped with a thermometer, stirrer and inlet tube, 32.8 g (0.40 mol) of phosphorous acid and ethylene oxide are added at temperatures of up to 70 ° C. The ethylene oxide is added until the temperature of the exothermic reaction begins to drop, indicating that most of the phosphorous acid has reacted.
The vessel is then held at 70 ° C. while a slow stream of ethylene oxide is passed through the reaction mixture for half an hour to ensure that the reaction has ended. The reaction mixture is concentrated at 70 ° C./1.0 mm Hg and yields 147.0 g of bis (hydroxypolyethoxyethyl) phosphonate.
In a separate 1 liter vessel, which is provided with a thermometer and stirrer and which contains 42.1 g (0.40 mol) of diethanolamine, 46.0 g (0.40 mol) of 40% aqueous formaldehyde are introduced and the Maintained reaction temperature between 20 and 30 C. After the addition has ended, the reaction mixture is stirred for a further hour before the mixture is added dropwise to the phosphoric acid-ethylene oxide reaction product, the temperature being kept between 25 and 50.degree. All of the above-mentioned reactions that are exothermic are controlled by water cooling. After the last addition has ended, the reaction mixture is stirred for a further hour at room temperature and then heated to 70 ° C. for one hour.
Finally, the mixture is concentrated at 70 C / 1.0 mm Hg, and 188.0 g of bis- (hydroxypolyethoxyethyl) - -N, N-diethanolamino-methylphosphonate, which, according to analysis, contains 6.3% P and a hydroxyl equivalent- has a weight of 120.

A 15% excess of 1,2-epoxypropane is added and the mixture is heated to 65 ° C. for one hour before it is concentrated at 70 ° C./1.0 mm Hg.
In another reaction vessel equipped with a thermometer and stirrer and containing 42.1 g (0.40 mol) of diethanolamine, 46.0 g (0.40 mol) of 40% aqueous formaldehyde are added and the temperature of the mixture is kept in the range of 20-30 C. When the addition is complete, the epoxypropane-phosphoric acid reaction product is added over the course of one hour, the temperature being maintained between 25 and 50 C. All of the above-mentioned reactions that are exothermic are controlled by water cooling. After the addition is complete, the reaction mixture is stirred for a further hour at room temperature and then heated to 70 ° C. for one hour.
It is then concentrated at 70 ° C./1.0 mm Hg and yields 188.0 g of bis - (hydroxypolypropoxypropyl) -N, N-diethanolaminomethylphosphonate which, according to analysis, contains 7.1% P and a hydroxyl equivalent weight of 110.

The epichlorohydrin is added until the temperature of the exothermic reaction begins to decrease, indicating that most of the acid has reacted. A 15% excess of epichlorohydrin is added to the mixture and the temperature is kept at 70 ° C to ensure that the reaction is terminated.
The mixture is then concentrated at 70 ° C./1.0 mm Hg and yields 370.0 g of bis (hydroxypolychloropropoxy) phosphonate. 34.5 g (0.3 mol) 40% aqueous formaldehyde are introduced into a separate 1-liter reaction vessel equipped with a thermometer and stirrer and containing 31.6 g (0.3 mol) of diethanolamine, while the reaction temperature is between 20 -30 C.
After the addition is complete, the reaction mixture is stirred for a further hour and then added to 0.3 mol of epichlorohydrin-phosphoric acid reaction product, as described above. This reaction mixture is heated to 70 ° C. for one hour and then at 70 ° C./1 .0 mm Hg concentrated. 370 g of bis- (hydroxypolychlorpropoxychlorpropyl) - -N, N-diethanolaminomethylphosphonate are obtained, which according to analysis contains 6.1% P and 7.1% Cl and has a hydroxyl equivalent weight of 120.
