Die Erfindung wird nachstehend anhand von Ausfüh rungsformen einer Vorrichtung zur Durchführung des erfindungsgemässen Verfahrens näher erläutert. In der Zeichnung bedeuten: Fig. 1 eine Perspektivansicht (teilweise im Schnitt) eines Gasbehandlungsgerätes; Fig. 2 einen Schnitt durch die Elektrodenanordnung, die in dem Ionengenerator nach Fig. 1 verwendet wird; Figm 3 einen Schnitt nach der Linie 3-3 der Fig. 2;
Method and device for treating oxygen-containing gases 1 The invention relates to a method and a device for treating oxygen-containing gases, in particular an improved method and device for treating atmospheric gases in order to generate a high ion yield.
The use of begative ions in medical treatments and the utilization of this field of application have been hampered to some extent by the lack of a negative ion generator capable of generating an appropriate concentration of negative ions. Known devices, in the case of ions in the usual way, for example by radioactive irradiation and / or electrical stress on an ionizable medium, e.g. generated by atmospheric air are not suitable for delivering high ion concentrations using small or conveniently portable devices that can also be used in the home.
This relatively low ion yield in these devices is partly due to ionization chambers or cell constructions in which the electrodes impede the flow of the ionizable medium, or in which the ionization or transport chambers are designed so that extensive recombination of the Ions take place.
The present invention thus relates to a method for treating an oxygen-containing, gaseous medium to generate ions or ozone.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method according to the invention, in which an oxygen-containing gaseous medium is passed through a channel delimited by a non-conductive material with the aid of a fan or a pump.
According to the invention, the above-mentioned method is characterized in that the gaseous medium is passed in a continuous stream past an electrode arranged in the stream and then at least one further electrode with a smaller area, the latter laterally next to the stream at a distance from the first electrode is arranged, and that with the help of these two electrodes, an electric field is generated in the gaseous medium.
A device suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention is characterized by an electrode extending at least to the center of the channel, the pointed end or ends of which point in the direction of the gas flow, at least one second electrode with a smaller size, arranged downstream of the first electrode in the channel Area, and means for applying a potential between the first and second electrodes.
Ions are mentioned above and also in the following remarks. This term refers to ions, which are gaseous constituents of the atmosphere such as oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor. By way of example, the presentation of a negatively ionized atmosphere in the following description, the possible generation of a positively ionized atmosphere is not excluded. The possibility should also not be excluded that some ions with a certain sign may be present in an atmosphere which predominantly consists of ions with the other sign.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to embodiments of a device for carrying out the method according to the invention. In the drawing: FIG. 1 shows a perspective view (partially in section) of a gas treatment device; Fig. 2 is a section through the electrode assembly used in the ion generator of Fig. 1; 3 shows a section along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
4 shows a partial elevation (partially broken away) of a further embodiment of a gas treatment device; FIG. 5 shows a section along the line 5-5 of FIG. and FIG. 6 is a perspective partial view (partially broken away) of a further embodiment of a device which is suitable for generating ozone. 1 shows an apparatus for treating gases in the form of a negative ion generator which is generally designated 10.
The ion generator contains a flow channel which represents an ionization cell or chamber, which is designated by 12 in general. An air stream or a stream of another ionizable medium is forced through the cell or chamber with the aid of a centrifugal pump or a blower 14. The electrodes in the ionization cell 12 are arranged so that the medium from the pump or blower 14 flows through the chamber 12 without significant turbulence and braking, being ionized to a considerable degree and thus a source of enriched ions or ozone is created.
The centrifugal fan or pump 14 constitutes a device for generating a gas flow and contains an inlet opening 16, preferably provided with a filter, through which air is supplied into a cavity of the pump or the fan. The cavity contains an impeller driven by an electric motor 18. An air flow flowing outward through the ionization cell 12 is generated by the impeller. The cell is connected to the fan or pump 14 by means of a flange part which is fastened to a corresponding flange 14a on the housing of the fan 14 by a plurality of detachable fastening means 20.
The ionization cell 12 contains a delimited flow channel which is formed by a cylindrical tubular non-conductive body 22 which is verbun at one end to the outlet of the fan 14 and at the other end has an outlet opening through which the ionized medium flows. The outlet opening can be provided with a conical diffuser end 36.
The electrode arrangement of the cell 12 includes a central electrode 24 which is approximately L-shaped; it consists of a vertical leg 24a which is attached to the non-conductive element 22, and a horizontal leg 24b which ends in a point at its free end and which extends generally along the axis of the tube 22. Two further electrodes, the side electrodes 26 and 28, are located on the walls of the non-conductive part 22 and are diametrically opposite one another.
The inner ends of the electrodes 26 and 28, which are preferably made of wire with a small diameter to produce point electrodes, are arranged radially to the axis of the tube 22 and can be mounted somewhat recessed in the walls of the tube 22, as shown in FIGS 1 and 3 are shown; however, they can also cut off flush with the walls of the tube 22 or protrude somewhat into the interior of the tube 22. In this way, the inner ends of the electrodes 26 and 28 do not impede the flow of the ionizable medium through the tube 22 or do not generate any significant turbulence.
The electrodes 26 and 28 are preferably arranged somewhat downstream of the free end of the horizontal leg 24b of the central electrode 24 and somewhat recessed in the walls of the tube 22.
In order to effect the electrical stress on the ionizable medium by applying a high voltage gradient to the medium flowing through the ionization cell 12, the central electrode 24 is connected to the potentiometer 30 with a controllable connection, which is a direct voltage source, e.g. a battery 32, bridged. Of course, this direct current source can also be an electronic circuit of a suitable type, e.g. a high-frequency oscillator with an output rectifier stage for converting the generated oscillations into a direct current potential.
In the device shown in Fig. 1, which is intended to generate negative ions, the positive Klem me of the battery 32 or the DC voltage source is either directly or indirectly earthed via a power line, so that the potential applied to the electrode 24 with respect to earth is negative. The other point electrodes 26 and 28 are grounded.
The degree of ion generation in generator 10 can advantageously be displayed with the aid of a neon lamp 33 connected between electrodes 26 and 28 and earth, with a capacitor 34 connected in parallel to the base of lamp 33, as indicated in FIG is. The flashing frequency of the lamp 33 indicates the extent of the ion generation. But you can also omit the capacitor 34; then the relative brightness of the lamp is a measure of the ion generation.
In the generator 10, the centrifugal pump or fan 14 is adjusted so that the air flow through the ionization cell 12 carries about 283 liters / min be; the potentiometer 30 is set so that a potential in the range of about 6000 to 8000 volts is applied to the central electrode 24, the side electrodes 26 and 28 being connected to earth either directly or via the power line.
Under these operating conditions, a uniform electric field is generated by the electrode arrangement in the ionization point, and the air flow through the ionization cell 12 is practically unhindered and without turbulence. It was found that the ion generators 10 constructed in the manner indicated above weigh only about 4 to 5 kg and generate negative ions of the order of magnitude of 1.8 × 10 $ per cubic centimeter at an air flow rate of about 170 liters / min .
If the construction of FIG. 1 is accommodated in a non-metallic housing, for example in a plastic housing, it is found that the ion yield can be increased significantly if a grounded ring of conductive material 35 is fitted around the channel formed by the tube 22 , which surrounds or includes the outlet part of the tube 22, as shown in FIG.
4 and 5 further Ausfüh approximate form of the invention contains a central, approximately F-shaped electrode 44, which is attached to the vertical leg 44a on the non-conductive part 42, which forms a channel, and two horizontally extending legs 44b and 44c which are pointed at their free ends and which run generally parallel to the axis of the tube 42. The legs 44c and 44b are approximately diameters from the walls of the tube 42 and spaced from each other, as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. Two further electrodes, the grounded side electrodes 46 and 48, are attached to the walls of the non-conductive part 42 and are diametrically opposite one another.
They are preferably located somewhat downstream of the free ends of the horizontal legs 44b and 44e and are somewhat recessed in the walls of the tube 42. The electrode 44 and the electrodes 46 and 48 are associated with one another so that one passes through the tips 44c and 44b of the Electrode 44 drawn line is approximately at right angles to a straight line drawn through electrodes 46 and 48. It can be seen that FIGS. 4 and 5 show only a partial view and that the details of the required fan and the high-voltage circuit connected between the central electrode 44 and earth, which can be similar to that in FIG. 1, for the sake of simplicity have been omitted.
The ion yield is slightly higher than in the embodiment according to FIG. 1 when the electron arrangement with the two tips of FIGS. 4 and 5 is used. Similar results are obtained if a third tip electrode is arranged approximately in the middle between the pointed parts 44b and 44c.
In order to generate ozone with the device indicated in FIG. 1, the voltage must be adjusted with the aid of the potentiometer 30, and the grounded electrodes 26 and 28 must pass through the wall of the non-conductive part 22 so close to the central electrode 24 that that a corona discharge is generated; But they must not be so close together that an arch is formed. The exact distance depends on the applied voltage and the speed of the air.
It should also be noted that ozone can be generated in the cell of FIG. 1 if an AC high voltage source is used in place of the DC source 32 of FIG.
A further embodiment of a device for treating atmospheric air for the purpose of generating ozone, in which practically no ions are formed, is shown in FIG. It can be seen that FIG. 6 is only a partial view and that all details of the fan and the high-voltage circuit, both of which can be similar to those in FIG. 1, have been omitted for the sake of simplicity.
The arrangement indicated in Fig. 6 includes means forming a channel, e.g. a tube 52, a middle electrode 54, two grounded side electrodes 56 and 58 which protrude into the channel formed by the tube 52, and an electrode part 60, which is shown in the form of two rods crossing at right angles. The cross bars join in the axis of tube 52 and pass through the walls of tube 52 transverse to the direction of air flow and downstream from grounded electrodes 56 and 58. The electrode 60 is, as indicated in FIG. 6, connected to the center electrode 54.
The electrode 60 thus has a polarity which repels the negative ions and thereby reduces their speed to such an extent that they are practically completely captured by the grounded electrodes 56 and 58. Although the electrode 60 is shown in the form of a cross, its precise shape is not critical; other shapes of electrodes connected in the same way can give similar results.
The person skilled in the art recognizes from the description of an embodiment of the device that an improved method for the treatment of an oxygen-containing gaseous medium, such as atmospheric air, is explained, after which large amounts of negative or positive ions or, if desired, ozone depending on the The size and polarity of the potential applied to the electrodes can be formed.
This process can be summarized as follows: An oxygen-containing, gaseous medium, such as atmospheric air, is treated using suitable equipment, e.g. the device shown and described here used who to the gaseous medium in continuous flow in a non-conductive (dielectric) medium via a first electrode, which is in the stream, and at least one other electrode with a smaller area, which is on one side of the stream in a certain distance from the first electrode, with the aid of the electrodes an electric field with a high field strength is applied to the oxygen-containing gaseous medium.
The method can be used for treating an oxygen-containing gaseous medium, such as air, in order to generate ions with the desired polarity by switching the first electrode in communication with the medium so that it has the same polarity as that to be generated Ions, and the small area electrodes on one side of the stream are grounded.
This method can be modified somewhat to achieve a higher ion yield by additionally conducting the current through a grounded electrically conductive ring which is located downstream of the electrode with the small area.
The method according to the invention can also be used to generate ozone (practically no ions being generated) by directing a stream of air continuously through a delimited channel, with the aid of a tip electrode arranged in the channel with a first polarity and two tip electrodes in opposite directions Polarity, which are arranged downstream of the first electrode, applies an electric field with high field strength to the air flow and directs the air flow around a third electrode arranged downstream of the two tip electrodes and connected to the first electrode,
so that the ions in the air flow are repelled with the aid of the third electrode and are slowed down to such an extent that they can be captured by the two tip electrodes.
