Method for determining the iron oxide content in slag and application of this method for setting the degree of oxidation during a metal smelting process The subject of the invention is a method for the rapid determination of the iron oxide content of a foundry slag that is produced during iron and steel smelting.
It is known that various impurities which are contained in the metallic starting materials, in the fuels used for melting and which arise during the melting process, are removed from the metal by slagging. In most smelting processes, the type and composition of the slag is directly related to the quality of the metal produced.
The metal oxide content of the slag, which in the iron melting process includes iron oxides, silicon and manganese oxides, is particularly important for determining the progress of the melting process. For example, a high content of metal oxides in the slag indicates strongly oxidizing conditions during melting.
Too strongly oxidizing conditions during melting lead to inclusions, gas pores and other defects in the castings made from the metal produced under these conditions, whereas strongly reducing conditions, which are indicated by a low content of metal oxides in the slag, lead to other defects, for example gas formation, hot cracks and other third formations, which are caused by the presence of hydrogen in the melt, lead.
The aim of the invention was to develop a method for quickly determining the iron oxide content of the slag that is formed during this melting process. Another aim of the invention was to provide methods for controlling and adapting the melting conditions so that it is possible, please include to maintain a degree of oxidation which ensures optimal metal quality.
Other objects of the invention are methods of controlling the melting temperature and slag color. The invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawing.
Fig. 1 shows a calibration curve that shows the connexion between the iron oxide content of the slag and the difference between the true and the apparent temperature of the slag defined below.
It has been found that there is a direct relationship between the iron oxide content of the slag, which is formed when melting an iron-containing charge, and the apparent temperature of the slag explained below, and that this relationship for this reason for determining and setting the Degree of oxidation can be used during the melting process.
The invention relates to a method for the rapid determination of the iron oxide content of a foundry slag, which is obtained in iron and steel smelting, which is characterized in that a calibration curve is drawn up by selecting a variety of different calibration slag samples, and For each sample, the iron oxide content and also the true temperature and apparent temperature are chemically determined, the apparent temperature being the one determined with optical devices,
which have not been appropriately corrected for emissivity and plots the iron oxide content on one axis of the calibration diagram and the difference between the true and apparent temperature on the other axis of the calibration diagram, and then measures the true and apparent temperature of the molten slag and the difference between the plots the true and apparent temperature on the second axis and connects it at right angles to the point of intersection with the calibration curve and then reads this point of the curve on the first axis,
so that the iron oxide content of the molten slag is obtained without the need to carry out a chemical analysis. The method according to the invention is applicable to all types of melting processes that are used for remelting gray cast iron, pig iron and steel, but in the example the invention is explained using the application in cupola furnace melting of gray cast iron. However, the invention is not limited to this particular embodiment of the method.
Furthermore, the invention relates to an application of the method according to the invention for setting the degree of oxidation during a metal smelting process, which is characterized in that changes are made during the process that the iron oxide content in the slag changes, and that this iron oxide Content in the slag changes,
and that this iron oxide content is determined according to the method according to patent claim I and the changes are made until the correct iron oxide content is reached in the melting process.
If the temperature of a slag sample is measured with the aid of optical pyrometers, a true temperature determination is not possible due to the emissivity of the slag because the temperature instrument or the pyrometer does not allow referring to the true temperature of a black body.
In the case of a so-called black body, in which all light waves are radiated from the body, the temperature read or apparent on the pyrometer is the real one, and it corresponds to the temperature that would be obtained by measuring with immersed thermocouples.
For a body that does not have total emissivity, where only part of the light wavelengths are emitted, the optical pyrometer measurement will be inaccurate, unless the emissivity is known and an appropriate correction of the apparent measurement result can be made. Molten metals such as gray uss, pig iron and steel,
have fairly well-known so that when determining the temperature of these metals by optical methods it is possible to introduce a correction for the emissivity and thus to maintain the true temperature value, or the immersion temperature. In the case of slag, the emissivity factors are not well known and, moreover, are so variable that the determination of the true slag temperature by optical methods is completely impracticable.
With certain pyrometers, special filters are used to create the ideal black body ratios and thereby eliminate difficulties in measuring the temperature of molten slag. Immersion thermocouples can also be used for this purpose.
In the method according to the invention, the true temperature of the slag sample or the batch is determined in a first step. This can be done with the help of an instrument, for example a radiation pyrometer, which is set so that it provides the values for a black body,
or the measurement can be carried out with the aid of an immersed thermocouple. The temperature can also be very well estimated by determining the true temperature of the molten metal bath that is in contact with the slag. Since the slag and the metal are in contact with each other, the actual temperature of the slag is very similar or exactly as great as the actual temperature of the metal.
In a second process step, the apparent temperature of the slag is determined with the aid of an optical pyrometer, which is in no way adapted to the emissivity of the slag. The difference between the true temperature, which is determined in the first stage, and the apparent temperature, which is determined in the second stage, is due to the emissivity of the slag. As has now been found, this emissivity is closely related to the iron oxide content of the slag, so that it is possible
to use the emission factor or the difference between the measurement of the first step and that of the second step as a measurement method for the iron oxide content of the slag.
On the basis of this determination, the melting process can then be adapted in a manner known to the person skilled in the art so that the degree of oxidation during melting is either increased or decreased, and the iron oxide content of the slag is thereby also brought to a value that is appropriate for the respective molten metal type is most suitable.
For example, such a setting is achieved in the Cupola furnace process in that the air supply is throttled in order to reduce the degree of oxidation or, on the other hand, the amount of coke used is increased to achieve the same effect.
If the process is carried out discontinuously using gas or oil as fuel, then the oxidation can normally be reduced by changing the color of the flame by adding more or less fuel in relation to the amount of air supplied.
In the case of an electrical melting process, the degree of oxidation can be reduced by adding carbonaceous material to the weld pool, or the degree of oxidation can be increased by adding iron oxide to the weld pool.
However, the invention does not relate to the special methods for increasing or reducing the degree of oxidation during the melting process, because these methods are already known, but rather only concerns (a method for determining the oxidation so that the necessary steps can then be taken .
The implementation of the method according to the invention will now be described using the Cupolofen method.
A cupola furnace was loaded and put into operation. After two hours of melting, the true temperature of the slag that ran out of the slag channel was measured with the aid of a platinum thermocouple and the result was 1508 C.
At essentially the same time, a temperature measurement of the slag was carried out with the aid of an optical pyrometer which did not have a filter for adapting to the emissivity. This apparent temperature was 1475 C.
The difference between the true temperature (w. T.) and the apparent temperature (see T.) was therefore 33.3 C. According to FIG. 1, this corresponds to an iron oxide content in the slag of 8.8%. Since this iron oxide content was considered too high, the wind volume used in the melting process was reduced. After a further 30 minutes of melting, the same temperature measurements were made on the slag.
The true temperature (w. T.) was 1525 C and the apparent temperature (see T.) 1470 C. The temperature difference in this case was 55.5 C, which corresponds to an iron oxide content of 5.4 according to FIG . At the same time the color of the slag changed so that it appeared lighter, indicating a lower degree of oxidation.
The values of FIG. 1 were determined by first carrying out a series of melting processes with different degrees of oxidation. Several simultaneous temperature determinations were made, both true and apparent temperatures, and at each measurement a sample of the slag was taken for chemical analysis for iron oxide content.
The iron oxide content was plotted against the difference between the measured value of the true temperature and the measured value of the apparent temperature, resulting in the relationship shown in FIG. 1.
This relationship can also be determined by having two optical. or uses two radiation pyrometers both to determine the true temperature and to determine the apparent temperature. If one proceeds in this way, the pyrometer has a suitable filter medium for determining the true temperature, so that the effect of the emissivity is canceled, while the pyrometer for determining the apparent temperature does not have a compensation filter for the emissivity.
Since the rest of the composition of the slag and not just the iron oxide content has a certain influence on the emissivity, it is advantageous to set up a calibration curve corresponding to that of FIG. 1 for each process.
If you do this, the iron oxide content is the essential variable. For example, in the case of a basic slag that is rich in CaO and Mg0, but relatively poor in S, 402, the exact relationship between the iron oxide content and the emission factor cannot be numerically the same as with an acidic slag, which is relatively low has a low Mg0 and CaO content and a relatively higher Si02 content. For this reason it is better
to determine the ratio shown in Fig. 1 for each operation and each type of slag. In melting practice, it is relatively easy to adjust the rest of the composition of the slag, with the exception of the iron oxide content, because this composition is determined by the respective amounts of flux used during the melting process.
The iron oxide content, however, is essentially determined by the strength of oxidation during melting, so that the method according to the invention is a method for accurate and immediate estimation of this degree of oxidation, which makes it possible to vary the melting conditions as desired.
Since the oxidation strength can change during melting without any warning signs within a short time, it is not possible to rely on chemical analyzes to guide this process, because the chemical analysis methods for determining the iron oxide content are time-consuming and various variations in the oxidation strength can take place while the iron oxide content is determined in the laboratory according to chemical procedures.
With the method according to the invention, the degree of oxidation of the slag can be determined essentially immediately. A very pleasant embodiment of the method according to the invention results from the use of two measuring pyrometers which deliver both the true temperature of the slag and the apparent optical temperature. In such an embodiment, a continuous and constant determination of the iron oxide content of the slag is possible, please include and the settings for changing this iron oxide content can be carried out by the operator of the furnace.
