Fig. 5 zeigt ein Wickelschema von zwei Filamentlagen.
% seines Gewichtes an Nitrilgummi beschichtet.
Neoprengummi 100 Gewichtsteile
Zinkoxid 5 Gewichtsteile
Magnesiumoxid 4 Gewichtsteile
Antioxidant 2. Gewichtsteile
Phenolharz 15 Gewichtsteile 4,4QOxybisbenzoisulfonylhydrazid 0,8 Gewichtsteile
Cumarin/Indolharz 10 Gewichtsteile
Aliphatischer Kohlenwasserstoff 15 Gewichtsteile
Vulkanisiermittel 0,8 Gewichtsteile
Compressible porous layer and method for making same
The present invention relates to compressible porous layers and a method for making them.
In printing and industrial applications today, compression rollers are often used in conjunction with a non-resilient surface; a non-resilient roller is generally used for this purpose, although plates are also used. In order to obtain the desired intimate contact of the material passed between the rollers, a force is exerted on the combination. It is therefore necessary that one or both of the rolls be compressible in order to ensure surface contact of both rolls, even if there are variations in the materials or equipment to be treated. However, rubber, which is the most commonly used material for such rollers, is not a really compressible material.
In the true sense of the word, a compressible material must have a reducible volume; that is, it must have the ability to be forced into a space which has a smaller volume than the original volume of the material. Rubber does not have this property, but is rather deformed by stress and flows in a similar way to liquids. When rubber is pressurized, it moves in different directions from the point of application of pressure, distorting or deforming the rubber without changing its volume and taking on a different shape than it was before the application of pressure.
In such roller-equipped devices running at high speeds, the lack of compressibility and dimensional stability leads to a number of deficiencies such as heat build-up, generation of static electricity, increased wear, and variations in the speed of travel through the nip.
The object of the present invention is to create a truly compressible layer which does not have the disadvantages described above.
The layer according to the invention consists of a number of superposed layers of filaments running parallel to one another at intervals, the filaments of each individual layer being arranged in a Wankel to those of the layer below and connected to one another at their crossing points by elastic binding agent, whereby voids are formed in the layer .
In a preferred embodiment, the layer is in the form of a roll in which the entire surface of the filaments is coated with elastomeric binder.
When a pressure is applied while such a roller is in use, the elastomeric binder flows into the cavities, whereby the roller takes up a smaller volume than in the unloaded state. The roll is also resistant to lateral distortion because of the stabilization created by the filaments. The role is thus compressible under load and takes up a smaller volume than in the unloaded state; it is also dimensionally stable. There is practically no movement in the roller under load, with the exception of that in the direct line of the applied load.
The layers described are produced by winding several layers of filaments running parallel to each other at an angle that runs obliquely to the axis of a core so that voids are formed between the filaments and that the individual filaments of superimposed layers at their crossing points be connected to one another by means of elastomeric binding agents.
In the following the invention is explained with reference to the drawings, for example.
Fig. 1 shows a schematic view of a roller with partially removed surface coating.
2 shows an enlarged schematic view of two filament layers lying one above the other.
FIG. 3 shows an enlarged schematic cross section along the line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 shows the same section as FIG. 3, but under load.
Fig. 5 shows a winding scheme of two filament layers.
Fig. 6 shows schematically an embodiment of the method suitable for producing layers according to the invention.
In Fig. 1, the roll 10 consists of a non-fed, ernden core 11, on which rubber-coated filaments 13 are wound in a predetermined pattern. The surface of the layer is provided with a surface coating 12.
In FIG. 2, a layer of filaments 15 has been wound onto the core at an angle inclined from right to left to the axis of the core. The filaments 16 form the next following layer, which are wound at the same angle, but inclined from left to right to the axis of the core. The filaments 15 and 16 of the two layers are connected to one another at their crossing points 17 by the elastomeric binding agent.
In FIG. 3, a number of layers of cord yarns made of individual filaments 21, which are surrounded by the elastomeric binder 22, lie beneath the surface coating 20. The coated filaments form cavities 23 into which the elastomeric binder flows under load. FIG. 4 shows the same cross section as FIG. 3, but in a loaded state, the elastomeric binder 22 being forced to flow into the cavities 23.
In Fig. 5, the solid line 27 represents a filament which has been wound onto a non-resilient core 25 at a predetermined angle from left to right with respect to the axis of the core.
The broken line 26 shows the course of the same filament after it has been wound from right to left as a second layer on the same core.
The rolls are made by winding filaments in a predetermined pattern onto a non-resilient core. Each subsequent layer lies in such a way that its filaments do not lie exactly above the filaments running below in the same direction; it is shifted a little to create the necessary cavities. In one embodiment, the winding of the filaments is started at one end of the core and carried out at the desired angle to the axis of the core up to its opposite end. Then the winding direction is changed and the next layer is wound at the same, but opposite inclined angle as that to the other end of the core, whereby the filaments of the two layers form a cross pattern.
As soon as the starting point is reached, the winding direction is reversed again, but care is taken that the uppermost winding layer is shifted so that its filaments do not run directly over those of the lower layer laid in the same direction.
This process is repeated until the desired number of layers has been applied.
FIG. 6 shows an embodiment of a suitable manufacturing method, the filament 28 being drawn off the supply spool 29 and being guided over the deflection roller 30 through a container 31 containing elastomeric binding agent 32. The coated filament 33 leaves the container 31 through the nozzle bore 34, which strips the impregnated filament to the desired content of elastomeric binder. The filament so coated then passes through dryer 35 where the elastomeric binder is dried. The coated and dried filament then passes through the tension regulator 36 to a conventional winder by which it is wound onto core 38 in a predetermined pattern.
After the winding operation has been completed, the binder is hardened and, if desired, a layer of a suitable surface coating agent is applied.
Any suitable method can be used to apply the elastomeric binder to the filament. For example, the filament can be passed through a bath of elastomeric binding agent or the binding agent can be applied to the filament by means of a roller. The binding agent is preferably applied by passing the filament through a bath containing the binding agent and then drawing it through a nozzle bore in order to remove the excess binding agent evenly.
Drying can be carried out using hot air, infrared heaters or other suitable means. It is not absolutely necessary that the coated filament is completely dry, but the elastomeric coating must be sufficiently dry to prevent the winder from smearing and to prevent the binder layer from being destroyed at the intersection of the filaments by the filaments cut the layer under the winding tension. It is sufficient to dry the elastomeric binder to a moisture content of 2-3% by weight.
Alternatively, uncoated filaments can also be wound directly onto a core, as described above. During winding, the filaments are then provided with the elastomeric binder, for example by spraying, on the core and on the filament layers underneath, in order to create the coating and binding effect at the intersection of the filaments. In the manufacture of rolls according to this embodiment, the solids content of the binder used and the winding speed must be carefully regulated in order to prevent the cavities from being filled with binder.
One or more filaments can be wound onto the core at the same time. For example, two filaments can be wound at the same angle in opposite directions either from opposite ends of the core or from its center.
The volume of the cavities and the thickness of the filament layers of the rolls can vary within a relatively wide range depending on the desired properties of the roll. For example, pressure rollers for printing on paper require relatively little pressure; H. that a compressibility of approximately 0.127 mm is necessary, which can be achieved with a layer thickness of approximately 0.762 mm from filaments with a diameter of 0.127 mm. For a high-pressure roller for use in the textile industry, for example, a layer thickness of 1.27 cm consisting of layers of filaments with a diameter of 0.254-0.508 mm would be used.
For the majority of purposes, the above-mentioned layer thickness of 0.762 mm can be regarded as the minimum and that of 1.27 cm as the maximum layer thickness. It should be noted that the information given above is illustrative and can be varied depending on the particular filaments used.
The number of filament layers depends on the winding pattern used, the diameter of the filament, the winding tension and the angle of inclination of the turns. The angle of inclination of the windings is preferably in a range from practically right angled up to 450 inclination to the longitudinal axis of the roller.
The designation used here, practically right angle, is intended to refer to an angle starting from 900 and excluding the angle from 900 itself.
When the filaments are perpendicular to the axis of the roll, i.e. H. were wound at an angle of 900, the filaments of successive layers would lie directly on top of one another and the winding would not continue over the entire surface of the roll. It is important that the filaments are wound at such an angle that the individual turns do not touch each other. The minimum winding angle must therefore be set in such a way that the filament covers a greater distance in the direction of its longitudinal axis during one revolution of the roll than is the diameter of the coated filament. The minimum size of the cavities is therefore a function of the filament diameter. The specific winding angles chosen are also dependent on both the circumference of the roll and the desired void volume.
The smaller the distances between the filament turns, the smaller the cavities formed and the lower the compressibility. In a calender roll z. For example, where the desired compressibility is often 0.076-0.127 mm, a relatively thin layer of filament layers with a relatively small void volume would be employed. In a calender roll where a relatively large compressibility would be desired, for example from about 0.76 to
1.27 mm, a relatively thick layer of filament layers with a relatively large void volume would be used.
In an alternative embodiment, the filaments for several layers are wound at a certain angle and then this angle is changed.
A roll can thus have layers with different winding angles, but the change of the winding angle must not be made within one layer. The angle must therefore remain the same in the entire position.
In a preferred embodiment, the total void volume is not below 10%. However, void volumes of less than 10% can be used for uses with low compressibility desired. The upper limit of the cavity volume is determined by the unevenness of the pressing pressure, which can be tolerated for the respective use of the roller. If the filaments are wound in such a way that a relatively large void volume is created, the size of the voids created in the process leads to fluctuations in the compressibility in the roll.
The volume of the elastomeric binder on the filaments is preferably equal to the void volume. Preferably, the amount of binder used is not greater than the volume of the cavity.
However, there should be at least enough binder to allow it to flow into the cavities, thereby maintaining the desired compressibility of the roll. In a particularly preferred one
In the embodiment, approximately 75% by weight of the elastomeric binder, calculated on the filament weight, is used.
A smooth, abrasion-resistant coating is preferably applied to the surface of the roller.
This coating serves to prevent the winding pattern of the filaments from being transferred to the material running over the roll and protects the filaments from damage and wear. The respective surface coating is selected depending on the purpose of the roll and can be applied in different ways. For example, suitable materials for the surface coatings are synthetic rubber compositions such as butadiene / acrylonitrile or butadiene / styrene / acrylonitrile copolymers; Vinyl polymers such as PVC or polyvinylidene chloride; Epoxy resins and polyurethanes. The coatings can be applied as a solution or latex or in the form of a tape or a liner or shrinkable film.
For purposes where a smooth, polished surface is not necessary, this can consist of a layer of filament wound tightly over the entire surface of the roll.
In the following, the manufacture of rolls is explained, for example.
example 1
A glass fiber yarn (ECG 150 3/0, mean diameter of the fibers 0.254 mm, no twist, titer 900 denier, tensile strength 16 g / denier) was wound onto a core 15.25 cm long and 5.33 cm in diameter.
The yarn was coated with 13% by weight of nitrile rubber. Using a Leesona 959 winder, approximately 3290 meters of yarn was wound on the core at an angle of 450 to the longitudinal axis of the core. The winding was carried out in such a way that the filaments of concurrent layers did not come to lie directly on top of one another. The distance between the individual, parallel filament turns was approximately 0.079 cm. The thickness of the wrapping layer was approximately 1.27 cm. The roll was then additionally treated with a 10 weight percent nitrile rubber solution in order to increase the consolidation of the filament layers. The roll was then coated with a polyurethane film 0.5 mm thick. The finished roll contained 50% by volume of coated yarn and cavities.
The term filament used here refers to endless mono-, multifilament or multifilament cables as well as yarns or ropes made from staple fibers. Preferably, the filaments of the present invention are treated in a known manner to reduce any abrasion during manufacture of the roll, for example by a polymer coating such as PVC, plastisol or neoprene.
The filaments used can consist of both natural and synthetic fibers or contain them, such as glass, modacrylic (DYNEL), polyester (DACRON), polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride, fluorocarbon, rayon, nylon - or acrylic fibers, cotton or wool. The particular fibers used are selected with regard to the intended use of the roll. For example, glass is the preferred filament material because of its virtually complete elastic recovery under virtually all loads and temperatures. Other materials can be used if relatively light loads are used, or if elastic recovery is not a major factor in the use of the roller.
For example, DYNEL® fibers, which have 100% elastic recovery at 2% elongation, could be used for use under relatively low loads.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, yarn made from endless glass filaments is used. The yarn is made by twisting and / or plying a number of glass filaments. The yarn is provided with a polymer coating in order to reduce its brittleness.
Any elastomeric binder can be used in the process described. Examples of such elastomers are synthetic rubbers such as nitrile rubber, neoprene, butadiene / styrene rubbers, and natural rubber. The binders are preferably used as a solution in organic solvents.
However, they can also be applied in the form of aqueous latex.
Small amounts of conventional additives, for example vulcanizing agents, antioxidants, adhesion improvers, plasticizers, plasticizers, organic vulcanization accelerators, etc., can be mixed with the elastomeric binder. The filaments should be practically completely encased by the binder or have sufficient uniformity of a coating pattern in order to ensure uniform compressibility under load.
For example, to provide additional cushioning, the elastomeric binder can be foamed in a conventional manner. Any of the well known foaming agents, for example 4,4'-oxybisbenzenesulfonyl hydrazide, may be added to the elastomeric binder to foam the elastomer.
The degree of foaming can be varied. For example, the foaming can be carried out so far that the spaces between the filaments in the wound roll are practically filled with foamed elastomer and the filaments are connected by a network of elastomer / elastomer bonds. In such a case, the voids in the foamed elastomeric binder allow volume compressibility, and the elastomer / elastomer bonds in the foamed network provide a high degree of damping in the roll.
Foaming to a lesser extent provides rolls in which the voids formed by the wound filaments are not completely filled with foamed elastomer, and the filaments are covered with a thin layer of the foamed elastomer, which gives the finished roll damping properties in a similar way.
The following example illustrates the process described, in which the elastomeric binder is foamed.
Example 2
Glass fiber yarn (ECG 150-3 / 0) was wound onto a core 1.984 m long and 11.56 cm in diameter using a McClean-Anderson (Model W-L) filament winder at 125 rpm at an angle of 700. The space between the individual, parallel filament turns in a layer was 0.254 cm. Before winding, 3 layers of an elastomeric binder were applied to the yarn with intermediate drying, and the yarn had a diameter of 0.178 cm after the last coating.
The elastomeric binder used had the following composition:
Neoprene rubber 100 parts by weight
Zinc oxide 5 parts by weight
Magnesium oxide 4 parts by weight
Antioxidant 2. parts by weight
Phenolic resin 15 parts by weight 4,4Q-oxybisbenzoisulfonyl hydrazide 0.8 parts by weight
Coumarin / indole resin 10 parts by weight
Aliphatic hydrocarbon 15 parts by weight
Vulcanizing agent 0.8 parts by weight
Yarn tension during winding was kept to a minimum of about 200 grams and wound to an overall diameter of 15.74 cm. The solids amount of elastomeric binder was 10.906 g and the weight of the wound yarn was 2060 g. On the finished wound
A thin coating of the binder was applied to the roller and then the roller was cured for 4 hours at 1210 ° C.
A role was obtained in which the cavities originally formed by winding the coated filaments were practically filled with foamed elastomeric binder and the cavities required for the compressibility of the volume were created by the cellular network of the foamed elastomer.
In another embodiment, instead of winding the filaments directly onto a non-springy core, a compressible material can additionally be inserted between the core and the porous layer of filaments. Examples of such compressible materials are polymeric foams
Neoprene, urethane and natural rubber.
The cores on which the filaments are wound can be made of steel, rubber, plaster of paris or the like. The layer wound from filaments can be used together with the core, or the core can be removed after winding is completed.
The cured elastomer / filament layer can easily be peeled off or separated from the core by the core by a means that does not
Solvent for the filaments or the elastomer
Represents binder, is dissolved. A collapsible core can also be used.
The non-resilient core can be perforated to allow air to escape when the roll is compressed. In this way, the roll is cooled at high speeds during use. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the non-resilient core consists of a hollow, per-borated cylinder.
Although the invention with reference to a
Role has been explained, it should be noted that the inventive layer can also be used in the form of sheet-like material if this is not required. Such a sheet-like mate rial could be produced by cutting open the compressible layer of a roll parallel to its longitudinal axis and unwinding the compressible porous layer of filament layers from the non-resilient core. Flat material produced in this way could then be used, for example, as a compressible cover in lithography or as a backing layer for printing mats.
The rolls can be used in letterpress or offset printing, in textile finishing, in calenders, as laminating rolls and for other purposes where compressible rolls are required. For example, a product suitable for use as a vehicle tire can be produced by winding the filaments directly onto a conventional vehicle rim using the method described and providing the wound and cured structure with an abrasion-resistant polymeric coating made from any of the well-known rubber compounds. Alternatively, as described above, the wound and hardened structure can be removed from the core, for example by simply peeling it off, and pulled onto a conventional tire carcass.
Vehicle tires made in any of the ways described above are compressible and dimensionally stable, and exhibit the desirable property that they cannot burst.
