Description

Packaging containing containers arranged side by side
The present invention relates to a package containing containers arranged side by side in rectilinear alignment, the frustoconical upper part of which is terminated by a neck closed by a cap with a radial tongue.

For such packages it is common practice to tighten the containers sufficiently to prevent them from passing through the open ends of the package. In addition, it is known to form in such packages slits or openings at the corners of the package to receive the bottle caps and the lower part of the bottles so as to prevent their exit through the open ends of the envelope.

The bottle cap (s) are provided with radial protrusions to allow easy removal by hand, it is difficult if not impossible to achieve the necessary degree of clamping and the desired orientation of the containers without a considerable loss of time because the tabs of the capsules are oriented so as to extend towards the interior of the package.

The package according to the present invention comprises an upper central panel covering the capsules, a pair of inclined panels connected to the side edges of the central panel, and disposed adjacent to the frustoconical portions of the containers, several arcuate slits formed along the fold lines between the container. upper central panel and slanted panels.

This package is characterized by several arcuate openings formed in the inclined panels and arranged adjacent to the caps of the containers and concen- trally to the arcuate slots to define protective flaps covering the tabs, these openings being arranged to receive the radial tabs of the capsules, so that the containers can be arranged in the packaging along vertical axes and regardless of whether the radial tabs are arranged to extend outside the packaging or not.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a package showing the packaged articles.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the top of a bottle having a cap provided with a radial protrusion to allow manual removal of the cap.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view on a larger scale of only part of the packaging of FIG. 1 and showing the relative position of the packaging with respect to the article when the radial projection of the capsule extends towards the interior of the packaging.

Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank from which the packaging of FIGS. 1 and 3 is formed.

In the drawing, the reference numeral designates the upper central panel of the packaging. A pair of finger hook openings or tabs are stamped from panel 1 and are designated 2 and 3. Slant panels 4 and 5 are connected to center panel 1 by fold lines along the side edges. . The inclined panel 4 is connected to the side edge of the central panel 1 by a fold line 6 while the inclined panel 5 is connected to the other side edge of the central panel 1 along a fold line 7.

To receive the bottle caps, several arcuate slots are formed on the fold lines 6 and 7. These slots are designated in FIG. 4 in 8-13 inclusive. It is understood that the slots 8 - 13 serve to prevent the exit of the wrapped bottles through the open ends of the wrapper.

The side walls 14 and 15 are respectively connected to the lower edges of the inclined rings 4 and 5 along fold lines 16 and 17.

To help keep the bottoms of the bottles in the package, slant panels 18 and 19 are connected to the lower edges of side walls 14 and 15 along fold lines 20 and 21 respectively and several openings are formed in panels 18 and 15. 19 in '2-27 inclusive. As is well known, these openings receive the lower parts of the bottles as shown in FIG. 1 and are used to prevent the exit of the bottles from the packaging.

The bottom of the package as shown in the drawing is composed of a panel 28 which is connected along a fold line 29 to the lower edge of the inclined panel 18 and a similar panel 30 which. is connected along a fold line 31 to the lower edge of the inclined panel 19. To clamp the package, a pair of openings 32 and 33 are formed in panel 28 and like openings 34 and 35 are formed in panel 30. Appropriate machine parts enter each of these clamping openings and move inwardly so as to clamp the package around the group of articles. Once the package is tight, the cover panels 28 and 30 are assembled while keeping them tight.

To assemble the panels 28 and 30, locking tabs 36-39 are formed in one of the panels such as 28 and a plurality of retaining tabs 40-43 are formed in the other panel such as 30. With the wrapper tightly tightened. Appropriately, machine parts engage the locking tabs 36-39 and pull them upwardly through the openings defined by the retaining tabs 40-43 respectively. After that, the packaging is completed and has the appearance shown in fig. 1.

The bottle B shown in fig. 2 is provided with a capsule C comprising a radial projection P. If, when the packages designated at B are assembled, the projections P extend generally outwards from the packing group, these projections hamper the packaging formation. If the bottles are reoriented so as to ensure that the radial projections still extend inwardly of the package, this reorientation would require considerable time and hamper the packaging operation. Thus, means are provided for receiving the projections P extending outwardly if they occupy a position hindering the packaging operation and more particularly the inclined panels 4 and 5. Several openings 44, 45 and 46 are formed in the inclined panel 4 and in general alignment with a fold line 47 also formed in this panel.

Likewise, openings 48, 49 and 50 are formed in the inclined panel 5 in alignment with a fold line 51. Preferably, the openings 44-46 and 48-50 are of arcuate shape and in general. concentric with the associated slots 8-13. Thus, as shown in FIG. 3, the projection P can extend through the openings such as 48 without hindering the packaging operation or the appearance of the packaging. While for clarity of the drawing in fig. 3, the projection P is shown extending well outwardly of the opening 48, it is generally preferable to have the projection P almost entirely covered by the flap defined by the arcuate opening 48.

The packaging can be used to package a single row of bottles if desired.
