(J. P. Flory, Principles of Polymer Chem, istry , Seite 40, Cornell University Press, Ithica, New York).

Process for the preparation of grafted, synthetic, linear condensation polymers
The present invention relates to a method for the purpose of changing the particular properties of a synthetic condensation polymer.
The physical properties of a structure formed from a synthetic condensation polymer, properties such as dyeing ability, hydrophilic ability, light durability, heat resistance, density and the like of a synthetic textile product (e.g. a fiber, fiber, staple, flake, yarn, cable, cord, cloth or the like) depend to a large extent on the nature of the polymer from which the structure was made. Because of the identity of physical properties and chemical nature, the selection of a particular polymer for a particular purpose is based on the weighing of desirable versus undesirable properties in each particular polymer.
The object of the present invention is to provide a process for the preparation of grafted, synthetic, linear condensation polymers. This process seeks to modify the chemical nature of any particular condensation polymer, giving that polymer a physical or chemical property that is lacking without essentially affecting the main properties of the original condensation polymer.
This mentioned inventive method for the production of grafted, synthetic, linear condensation polymers is characterized in that one is based on synthetic, linear condensation polymers in the melt olefinically unsaturated compounds, the amides, acrylic esters, methacrylic esters, alcohols, amines, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, vinyl ketones, cyanides , Halides or phosphorus or sulfur-containing compounds are graft polymerized.
A synthetic condensation polymer is understood to mean a polymer which is produced by a step-by-step intermolecular condensation of functional groups, as well as those synthetically produced polymers which, when chemically degraded (e.g. by hydrolysis), are monomeric end products, different in composition from the structure-forming units. (J. P. Flory, Principles of Polymer Chem, istry, p. 40, Cornell University Press, Ithica, New York). Such a polymer is typically of fiber-forming molecular weight if a fiber forms upon contacting a molten surface of said polymer with a glass rod and upon withdrawal of the same.
Typical condensation polymers include polyamides, polyureas, polyesters, polyurethanes, polythioesters, polysulfonamides, and the like.
In the following examples the conversion of the! Modifiers in the non-extractable grafted copolymer measured in such a way that first a dried and finely comminuted or a thread-like sample of the crude product from the molten grafting process is treated with an extractant appropriate for the modifier in a Soxhlet extraction apparatus. The extract is put on both sides. The residue is dried in a nitrogen atmosphere at reduced pressure at 1200 C to constant weight. The percentage conversion of the modifying agent to the non-extractable polymer is calculated from the weight of the sample before and after the extraction.
In the analysis by precipitation, as indicated in the examples, a dried and weighed sample of the extracted product of the analysis mentioned above is dissolved in an appropriate solvent. A precipitant for the backbone polymer, which is a solvent for the ungrafted modifier, is added dropwise to the filtrate with vigorous stirring until no more precipitate forms.
The precipitate is filtered off, rinsed with the precipitant and dried to constant weight in a nitrogen atmosphere at reduced pressure and at 1200.degree. The content of modifying agent in the copolymer is calculated from this weight and from the weight of the extracted copolymer. The conversion of the modifying agent into the copolymer is calculated from this weight and from the weight of the crude copolymer. The values are corrected for the solubility of the substrate in the mixed solvent and the precipitant.
The following examples illustrate the invention. The technique used in the examples of Table I is similar to that of Example 1, except that Examples 2 and 4 through 8 inclusive have a 30 minute mixing period on and Examples 2, 3 and 7 turn off the ungrafted excess of modifier the shaped (thread-like) end structures instead of being extracted from the polymer prior to molding.
example 1
50 g of (0.02% TiO.2) polyhexa methylenadipamide flakes, sieved through an 80-mesh sieve with a hole size of 0.17 mm, with the relative viscosity of 39 and 25 g of commercial N-vinylpyrrolidone were in mixed in a polymerization tube.
The polymer tube is equipped with a spiral stirrer and a heating bath containing dimethyl phthalate with a boiling point of 2820 ° C. The polymerization tube is now closed airtight, blown through vigorously with oxygen, emptied 10 times and again filled with nitrogen. The heating bath is gradually brought to 2820 C and stirring is started as soon as possible. The contents of the tube have been observed to melt at around 2300C. The polymerization tube is kept in the heating bath at 2820 ° C. with continuous stirring for 60 minutes, after which time the contents of the tube were melted. The heating bath was then removed and the polymer in the tube was cooled under nitrogen.
After cooling, the 75 g of the reaction product was taken out and ground into powder in a mill.
65.1 g of the powder were extracted in a Soxhlet with water at 1000 ° C. for 24 hours and then dried to constant weight in a nitrogen atmosphere at reduced pressure at 1200 ° C. The weight of the product was 57.5 g. From these weights it was then calculated that the grafted copolymer contains 24.5% non-extractable poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone and that the yield of the commercial N-vinyl-pyrrolidone & in the non-extractable copolymer is 65% !.
The grafted copolymer produced in this way is spun at 2770 ° C. from a screw press (12.7 mm diameter) at a spinning speed of 91.4 m / min into a 5-filament yarn bundle; this yarn bundle is then drawn to a 23.5 total denier yarn bundle at a needle temperature of 800 ° C. and at a divider temperature of 1200 ° C., with a draw index of 4.0.
The yarn is light and deeply dyeable with acid dyes, vat dyes, direct dyes and capracyl dyes and shows an increased moisture content, increased winding ability, improved crimping ability, has permanent crimp by steam setting and the dirt can also be removed more easily, all of this can be controlled by determining these properties on a yarn which does not contain a grafted modifier; also an increased tensile strength after bleaching and a higher lightfastness were found in relation to the control samples.
Table I shows the amounts and types of condensation polymer employed and the amounts and types of modifying agent which have been melted together; all condensation polymers are polyhexamethylene dipamides, except in Example 8 which is a polycaproamide and Example 9 which is a polyamide of p-xylylenediamine and azelic acid.

The temperature at which the substrate and modifier are first brought together can be any temperature below the mixing temperature. In the case of batch production, this can best be done at room temperature.
In a continuous process, which is generally followed by the grafting in the melt of the melt polymerization of the polymer substrate, the bringing together can take place at the temperature of the molten polymer stream produced by fish.
The mixing temperature should be at least that temperature at which the combined substrate and the modifying agent are melted, and which temperature is usually the same as the final melting point (the lower limit of the melting range3 of the pure polymer substrate or the pure modifier, which is the temperature of the higher of the two In these cases the final melting point can be lower than the final melting point of one or both, i.e. the pure substrate and the modifying agent, and the mixing temperature must at least correspond to the final melting point thus lowered. A case of this type occurs in Example 1.
The upper limit for the mixing temperature is only dependent on the thermal stability of the reactants in the mixture. Temperatures at which the modifier decomposes should be avoided, and temperatures at which the polymer substrate decomposes significantly (by breaking the C-H bonds) should also not be used. The advantageous temperature is just above the defined lower limit. The upper limit of the advantageous temperature range is defined by the boiling point of the modifying agent (at the pressure at which it is currently being used).
The melt plug temperature depends to a large extent on the individual reactants and can be in the range of 110-400 ° C. In each case the lower limit is defined by the initial freezing point of the reaction mixture. As with the mixing temperature, the lower limit of the temperature range used with advantage is defined by the thermal stability of the reactants and by the boiling point of the modifying agent at the reaction pressure. The upper limit of the most favorable temperature range is further defined by the rate of depolymerization of the polymerized modifier and the occurrence of crosslinking and gel formation.
The equilibrium between the rates of polymerization and depolymerization is shifted towards depolymerization at higher temperatures. Above the temperature at which depolymerization begins to prevail, only monomeric modifiers and very short chains of the polymerized modifiers can be grafted to the polymer substrate. The rate of modification obtained at these temperatures is usually slower relative to that obtained at lower grafting temperatures and where the polymerization predominates alongside the depolymerization.
In melt grafting, the time at which the reactants are subjected to a complete reaction at the grafting temperature (so that essentially all of the modifying agent added is polymerized and / or grafted) depends to a large extent on the individual reactants and on the selected grafting temperature. The time required to achieve a certain desired modification ratio (at a particular temperature for a particular combination of substrate and modifying agent) can be determined in this way by checking several reactions with different reaction times and plotting the grafting time as a function of the modification ratio obtained.
The modification ratio can be determined by the extraction test described above.
Substrates to which this invention is applicable are synthetic linear condensation polymers. Particularly suitable, and especially if a high modification ratio is desired, are nitrogen polymers which have a hydrogen atom in the position in relation to the nitrogen. In this class of beneficially used, high molecular weight fiber-forming polyamides, also known as nylons, are particularly important.
Although the applicant does not want to be bound by an explanation of the reactivity (for the purpose of achieving a high modification ratio) of the best substrates, it can be assumed that the nitrogen activates the hydrogen in its position in relation to this and is more easily activated by radicals that derived from vinyl compounds can be displaced. The group of polymers used with advantage includes copolymers, provided that they contain at least 1.0% by weight of nitrogen atoms in the polymer chain.
The polymer, if it is brought into contact with the modifier at a temperature below the melting point, is preferably cut into small flake pieces.
The modifiers used in this inventive melt grafting process are vinyl compounds which have a spontaneous tendency to form free radicals at elevated temperatures and which contain functional groups other than ethylene double bonds. Homopolymerizable compounds are particularly suitable for this purpose.
Mixtures of more than one homopolymerizable compound and mixtures of homopolymerizable and co-polymerizable compounds can also be used.
As modifiers, those which are soluble in the molten polymer substrate are preferable, but modifiers which form emulsions in the molten polymer substrate can also be grafted.
Although the modifier is mixed with the polymer substrate, it should be in the liquid or in the
Gas state. Gaseous modifying agents can be mixed with and grafted to the molten polymer substrate at atmospheric pressure, but longer periods of time are required to achieve a high modification ratio. To achieve a high modification ratio and a desired short reaction time, a modifier in the liquid phase is preferred.
During the mixing and melt grafting process, the pressure of the gaseous modifying agent should therefore be at a critical temperature above the working temperature, preferably above the
Vapor pressure of the pure modifier are maintained at the mixing temperature, namely at the
Purposes to liquefy the modifier.
As mentioned above, melt grafting and melt spinning can be carried out in one operation. In this implementation of the process it is advantageous to adjust the amount of the modifying agent used to the desired modifying ratio, so that the melt grafting can be continued until essentially no more monomer remains.
The absence of a monomer during the
Melt spinning is usually beneficial. The absence of a monomer in melt spinning can, as already mentioned above, be achieved by the
Melt grafting reaction is carried out until no monomer remains; in this case the advantage of a single-stage graft-spinning operation is to be retained. The absence of a monomer during spinning can also be achieved by extracting the monomer from the crude melt graft prior to spinning.
With the present process according to the invention it is possible, thanks to the high modification ratio, which was obtained without lowering the spinnability, to produce new products, the process at the same time being characterized by great simplicity. When the process is used, the melt-spinning ability of the polymer (absence of gel formation) does not impose any upper limit on the modification ratio. Non-uniform distribution of the modifier in the substrate is avoided. The time required for the grafting process is relatively short. Further savings are achieved by eliminating costly initial operations.
If melt plugging is combined with melt spinning, further savings are possible.
The amount of modifier necessary to achieve significant changes in properties depends on the modifier itself and on the desired effect. If N-vinyl-pyrrolidone is used on the polyhexamethylene adipamide in the manufacture of fibers, it has been found that the moisture content at 20.30C at 100% relative humidity from 8% (an untreated control sample) to 27.4% when grafting from 42% of the modifier to the condensation polymer.
At the same relative humidity, a 22% modifier plug increases the moisture content to 18%. The windability of a sample with 42% modifier is good, whereas a sample which contains only 22% modifier has poor windability.
The winding ability of an untreated control sample is small. It has been observed that a sample which contains 42% modifier exhibits 20% smaller losses in the toughness test after being in a weathering apparatus for 200 hours than an untreated control nut. The sample containing 42% modifier stains to a depth of 10 relative to the depth of 1.5 with a control sample when stained with a Motall azo dye (Sibilan Black B.C.L.) in the heat.
The same sample shows a ten-fold darker coloration than a non-modi fied control sample using acidic, chromium, vat and cobalt dyes from Example 3 of German Patent No. 743 155 (1943).
The polymers of the present invention are useful in the manufacture of shaped articles, textiles such as threads, yarns, fibers, and the like; however, FR films and coating compositions can also be produced. As mentioned in the specification, these polymers have particular use in the field of synthetic polymer textiles.
