Process for the production of extruded profiles
The invention relates to a discontinuous process for producing rods or profiles from polyamides by activated anionic polymerization of lactams.
It is known to produce discontinuous tubes from polyamides by polymerizing a melt of lactams, activators and catalysts in heated and rotating molds. With such processes, molded parts with a length of up to 6 m can be produced.
It has also already been proposed to continuously produce molded articles from polyamides by polymerizing a melt of lactams, activators and catalysts in an extruder and pressing the polyamide through a cooled molding device. A particular disadvantage here is that the polyamide chains are broken down by the shear forces occurring in the extruder and the temperatures, which often rise above the melting point of the polyamides.
It has now been found that you can discontinuously produce rods and profiles from polyamides by activated anionic polymerization of lactams in a profile pressing machine and pressing the polyamide through a cooled molding device according to the invention by using an extruder as the profile pressing machine and the polyamide in the state of a supercooled melt> pressed through the molding device.
Rods or profiles made of polyamides are obtained in which the molecules are stretched so that shaped bodies of this type have better strength properties. For example, the notched impact strength of the moldings produced according to the invention is 1.5 times that of polyamide parts produced by conventional methods. It is also advantageous that the polyamide chains are not noticeably degraded and the polyamides have a narrow molecular weight distribution. At the high withdrawal speeds achieved according to the present process, the formation of cavities that is normally to be expected is prevented. In addition, the process of the invention gives polyamides whose monomer content is below 1.2% by weight.
In the case of polyamides produced by activated anionic polymerization of lactams by conventional processes, the monomer content is comparatively about 3 to 9%; the moldings produced according to the invention also have a 50% lower water absorption.
This is surprising, since it is known that the activated anionic polymerization of lactams proceeds very quickly and products with immeasurably high K values are obtained which can practically no longer be melted in a few minutes without decomposition. As comparative tests have also shown, it is not possible to heat a polyamide produced by conventional processes to 1900 C, for example, and then to extrude it.
The process according to the invention is advantageously carried out by first mixing the polyamide-forming starting materials in a thin-walled vessel which is heated to polymerization temperatures, for example from 80 to 1600 ° C., preferably from 100 to 1400 ° C. The vessel, which is provided with a movable floor, is inserted into the horizontally arranged extrusion press. The piston of the extruder is placed on the movable bottom of the vessel ¯, and the polymer, which is in the state of a supercooled melt after the polymerization, is pressed out by the cooled molding device. Temperature control is not required. Due to the cooling, an immediate solidification of the surface and thus a dimensional stability of the pressed profiles is achieved.
The most favorable properties of the moldings are achieved when the polyamide is pressed in the temperature range between 210 and 1800 C (intrinsic temperature). In this temperature range, the polyamide is in the state of a supercooled melt.
With a pressure of 10 tons and a punch cross-section of 150 mm and a punch area of 180 mm2, an extrusion speed of 20 m / min. can be achieved. With a diameter of the cylinder of the extrusion press of 150 mm, circular cylindrical rods with a diameter of 10 to 40 mm and a length of 15 to 20 m can be produced. The pressure is between 5 and 10 tons.
In order to obtain extruded profiles with particularly high strengths, it is useful to stretch them on a roller train or in drawing nozzles immediately after they have been pressed out.
FIGS. 1 and 2, which represent an example of an apparatus for carrying out the method, serve to further explain the method.
In Fig. 1: 1 is a mixing plate with which the polymerization batch 2 consisting of lactam, catalyst and activator is mixed, 3 a movable tray, 4 and 5 are the feeds attached to the movable tray through which the individual components of the polymerization batch are in the vessel must be pushed in.
In Fig. 2: 6 denotes the cylinder of the extrusion press, 7 the cooled molding device, 8 the extruded profile, 9 the polymerisation vessel, 10 the movable bottom of the polymerisation vessel and 11 the punch of the extrusion press.
Activated anionic polymerization is understood to mean the polymerization of lactams in the presence of activators and catalysts.
As polymerization catalysts, the compounds known for this purpose, such as the alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, e.g. B. sodium, potassium, calcium or their basic compounds, such as the amides, alcoholates or hydroxides, the organometallic compounds of 1. to III. Main group of the periodic table of the elements or preferably alkali lactam compounds such as sodium lactamate can be used.
Suitable lactams with 4 to 12 carbon atoms in the ring are in particular caprolactam, also capryllactam, enanthlactam, capnlao; tiam, laurolactam, substituted lactams, such as e-sithyl-e-caprolactam, e ethyl-0-oenanthlactam or methylene biscaprolactams.
Suitable activators are, for example, acylated lactams, such as N-acetylcaprolactam, and compounds which have an acylating effect, such as isocyanates, and particularly substituted ureas, but also urethanes or guanidines.
The polymerization can also be carried out in the presence of customary additives, such as fillers, dyes or pigments.
The profiles produced according to the invention are suitable for all purposes for which profiles produced by conventional methods are used.
example
A mixture of 500 g of caprolactam, 35 g of hexamethylene biscarbamidocaprolactam (addition product of 2 moles of caprolactam to 1 mole of hexamethylene diisocyanate 1,6) and 35 parts of sodium caprolactamate is placed in a polymerization vessel (Fig. 2) of 1.2 liters. The mixture is prepared beforehand by separately adding caprolactam containing caprolactamate and caprolactam containing rexamethylene biscarbamidocaprolactam into the vessel according to FIG. 1 and then mixing. The temperature of the melt is 1400 C, that of the polymerization vessel 1600 C. The mixing plate 1 is removed after the mixture has been homogenized. The vessel (Fig. 1), which is provided with a movable bottom, is inserted into the horizontally arranged extrusion press (Fig. 2).
The piston of the extrusion press is placed on the movable bottom of the vessel and the polyamide, which is in a supercooled melt state after the end of the polymerization and has a temperature of about 1850 ° C., is pressed through the cooled molding device 7. This pressing temperature is 250 C below the melting point of the polyamide. The hydrostatic pressure required for pressing is 8 to 9 Kp / cm2. For example, gears which have particularly good properties can be produced from the round bar obtained in this way.
