Beispiel I
Aufbau eines Polyäthylen-Polypropylen
Verbundmaterials

MR, kg/cm2 367,0 Zugfestigkeit, MR, kg/cm2 682,0 Modul, MR, kg/cm2 13921 Heisssiegelfestigkeit, g/2,5 cm 250
Process for making a polypropylene composite material
The invention relates to a method for producing a heat-sealable polypropylene composite material stretched on both sides, in particular an oriented polypropylene film, which has a relatively thin outer layer of a heat-sealable, thermoplastic material.
The commercial use of thermoplastic films in the field of packaging in or with flexible films has increased steadily in recent years. Self-supporting thermoplastic films, such as polypropylene films, are characterized by a high level of impermeability to water vapor, which is a particular advantage in the packaging of moisture-containing foods, since in this way the moisture content of the packaged goods is maintained to a substantial degree over the long term. Another desirable property of the polypropylene is its transparency, which allows easy visual inspection and inspection of the food wrapped in films made from this material.
The polypropylene film is tough, flexible at low temperatures, dimensionally stable up to temperatures close to its softening point and resistant to most solvents and chemicals as well as non-toxic, odorless and tasteless.
Because of the large packaging area per unit weight that can be achieved with the lightweight plastic and the relatively low costs, the polypropylene film is particularly interesting for flexible film packaging.
It is known that the physical properties, such as clarity, gloss, tensile strength and low-temperature brittleness, of thermoplastic films can be improved by orientation. This possibility of material compensation applies in particular to polypropylene. Oriented polypropylene is clearly superior to non-oriented material in terms of properties such as tensile strength module, tensile strength, elongation, impact strength and shrinkage force. The orientation is obtained by heating the film and stretching it longitudinally and / or transversely. On cooling, the film retains the shape it acquired during stretching.
This orientation leads to a change in the polymer molecules, which are aligned in the direction of orientation from a random (statistically disordered) position, and leads to a significant improvement in the film properties that are important for packaging films.
The ability of the polypropylene to bond to itself under heat and pressure, which is necessary when forming packages from the film, i.e. H. Being heat-sealable is just about sufficient before orientation, but it goes well below the usefulness limit during orientation. As is the case with most other types of oriented, thermoplastic materials, reheating of the oriented polypropylene film to the softening point for the purpose of heat sealing leads to the polypropylene molecules returning to their original, random position, whereby the film shrinks, wrinkles and tears. This characteristic of the oriented polypropylene film obviously gives rise to problems when attempting to heat-seal the material in the usual way.
In order to avoid these difficulties, provision has been made for the oriented film to be coated (lacquered) with heat-sealable substances such as polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinyl acetate, nitrocellulose and many other materials and combinations thereof.
The coatings are usually applied from solvent media and require expensive, specially trained coating and solvent recovery equipment. In addition, a special treatment of the film has proven to be necessary in order to ensure that these coatings adhere to the polypropylene base.
A variety of treatments are known, including the action of a corona discharge on the film or chemical treatment of the film with ozone, sulfochlorination, liquid or flame oxidation and the application of an intermediate layer that anchors the polymer of the top layer with the polypropylene base film . Flame treatments are described in U.S. Patent Nos. 2,632,921, 2684097 and 2683,894, solution treatments in U.S. Patent No. 2668 134, glow discharge treatments in U.S. Patent No. 2935418, and coating techniques in U.S. Patent No. 3,041,208 .
The present invention makes it possible to provide a heat-sealable, oriented polypropylene film which does not require any conditioning of the film surface for heat sealing by the above-mentioned, costly and time-consuming coating operations and film pretreatments. It enables the heat sealability of the polypropylene to be improved without sacrificing the desired properties of the polypropylene structures and furthermore makes an oriented polypropylene film with improved physical properties available. The invention thus creates a method to securely bond an oriented polypropylene film without the aid of adhesives and without the need for film pretreatment in a direct and low-cost way, even to thin films made of heat-sealable, thermoplastic materials.
Finally, it provides an oriented polypropylene film which, while maintaining a state of orientation, can be connected to other thermoplastic films with conventional heat-sealing tools without changing them by heat-sealing.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that at least one heat-sealable thermoplastic film is brought into intimate, but easily removable, contact with a polypropylene film and the combined films are stretched at an elevated temperature so that the films are firmly bonded to one another and the polypropylene film is stretched on both sides.
The thickness of the resulting composite material depends on the thickness of the starting materials and the draw ratios with which the desired degree of interlayer bonding is achieved, which variables in turn depend on the end use of the composite material. For film packaging, the thickness of the composite material can be in the range from about 0.005 to 0.64 mm, with a range from about 0.0127 to 0.025 mm being preferred. The composite film obtained according to the invention has a thin, adhesive layer of heat-sealable, thermoplastic material on its surface. The thickness of the heat sealable layer for packaging purposes can be in the range from about 0.00025 to 0.25 mm, with a range from about 0.00076 to 0.0025 mm being preferred.
Although the proportion by weight of the thin outer layer obtained in this way in the total composite material does not need to be more than about 10%, the oriented polypropylene film nevertheless receives a uniform, easily heat-sealable surface with an extremely strong adhesion between the outer layer and the polypropylene underlay.
According to a preferred procedure for producing an oriented polypropylene film, the polypropylene base film is stretched first in the longitudinal and then in the transverse direction, which can be followed by a second longitudinal stretching treatment if a balanced orientation is desired. The bringing together of the heat-sealable thermoplastic film and the polypropylene film in intimate contact during the formation of the composite film according to the invention can take place before each of these stretching stages. You can use the foils z. B. before the initial longitudinal stretching of the polypropylene base film, subsequent to the initial longitudinal stretching and before the transverse stretching or after the transverse stretching and before the second longitudinal stretching in intimate contact.
In all cases, the combined films are stretched at elevated temperature in order to obtain a composite material with an oriented polypropylene film which has excellent heat-sealing properties.
According to a preferred mode of operation of the invention, the polypropylene base film is initially stretched lengthways before it is brought into contact with the heat-sealable thermoplastic film. After longitudinal stretching, they are brought into intimate contact with the heat-sealable thermoplastic film and the film composite layers are then stretched in the transverse direction to a stretching ratio that is sufficient to obtain a composite material with strong adhesion to the layer interface.
For better understanding, the invention is described in detail below with reference to the production of a flexible composite packaging film.
The polypropylene base film (thickness about 0.005 to 2.54 mm, preferably about 0.076 to 0.15 mm) is covered with one or more layers of a heat-sealable thermoplastic film, such as polyethylene film, with a thickness of about 0.005 to 0.5 mm, preferably about 0, 0076 to 0.025 mm, brought into contact.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the polypropylene Orundfolienbahn is stretched lengthways in the following manner and subjected to preheating before it is brought into intimate contact with the thermoplastic film. A special surface treatment or preparation is not necessary for any of the material webs. For preheating, the base film web can be passed over a heated roller or a series of heated rollers. In this way, sufficient adhesion of the thermoplastic layer (s) is obtained when it is intimately brought together with the polypropylene base film, so that the film layer structure can then be handled during stretching.
In addition, this initial binding of the film layers supports the exclusion of air between the layers during stretching, which ensures complete and even lamination of the films. The intimate contact of the film layers can be obtained by passing them through a pair of pressure rollers. The layered film obtained in this initial stage can be delaminated very easily by simply pulling the layers apart by hand. The adhesion between the film layers is extremely low at this stage of the process.
This layer film is then stretched in the transverse direction in the manner described below.
As has been found, the oriented polypropylene composite film according to the invention can be effectively obtained in several working steps, the longitudinal orientation of the film base web and then the transverse stretching of the combined film layers being carried out in separate stages. However, other orientation methods can also be used, such as simultaneous biaxial orientation, in which the film layers are simultaneously stretched in the longitudinal and transverse directions (U.S. Patent No.
3048 895). You can stretch in several stages, i.e. H. carry out a longitudinal stretching and then a transverse stretching, or only orient in one direction, d. H. stretch the layer structure only in the transverse or only in the longitudinal direction, but at the end the polypropylene film must always be stretched on both sides.
The conventional devices for transverse stretching or lateral stretching of endless web or film material can be used for transverse stretching of the layered film web according to the invention, but the tenter frame known from textile technology is preferably used. The tenter frame is located in an oven housing which is divided into temperature-controlled zones and in which the layer film is heated by hot gas flowing onto it during transverse stretching. The tenter frame has chains over its entire length which, in uninterrupted succession, carry clamps or clamps that grip the film and guide it through the transverse stretching treatment.
As the film enters the tenter frame, it passes between parallel rows of tension clamps which grip the overlapping webs at the edges and diverge while the sheet is stretched transversely as it passes through the tenter frame. At the end of the clamping frame, the film is released from the clamps, with the empty clamps being guided by the chain back to the front end of the clamping frame to pick up the laminated film again.
Various numbers of furnace zones can be used in the fixture for the purposes of the invention, but preferably at least four zones are provided. The first zone represents a preheating zone, in which the layered film during the passage through the zone and before the beginning of the stretching in the following zones by circulating, heated gas, e.g. B. air, is preheated to temperatures in the range of about 121 to 1710 C.
In the second and third oven zone, the superimposed films held in place are kept at a temperature of about 107 to 1490 ° C. and 93 to 1350 ° C. by allowing gas heated to the desired temperature to flow against both sides of the film web at high speed. The sides of the tenter frame diverge sharply to form a stretching ratio of about 6: 1 to 12: 1, preferably about 8: 1.
The fourth oven zone represents the actual heating zone or heat setting zone in which the transversely stretched composite film is subjected to an elevated temperature in the range from about 149 to 1770 C, preferably about 1630 C, while it is held under transverse and longitudinal tension.
After the heat setting, the composite film, which is still under tension, is heated by blowing air to a temperature in the vicinity of the ambient temperature, i. H. about 27 to 490 C, cooled
After exiting the tenter frame, the released polypropylene composite sheet is passed through a set of trimming knives which remove the unstretched edges that were in the clamps of the tenter frame, and the composite material is then wound in a conventional manner.
The composite material obtained has extraordinarily strong adhesion between its layers, and the oriented polypropylene composite film can be directly heat-sealed using conventional heat-sealing tools, thanks to its thin outer layer made of heat-sealable thermoplastic, without the need for any special pretreatments or coatings.
On the other hand, the polypropylene base film which has been brought into intimate contact with a heat-sealable thermoplastic film can also be stretched in the machine or longitudinal direction. The apparatus and working conditions under which the layer film receives the longitudinal orientation are identical to those that are used for the longitudinal orientation of the polypropylene base film when the heat-sealable thermoplastic film is brought together with the polypropylene film after longitudinal orientation and before transverse orientation. The longitudinal orientation is generally carried out at a temperature in the range from about 93 to 1490.degree. C. and preferably from about 110 to 1320.degree.
The layered film is stretched in the longitudinal direction by about 20 to 300%, preferably about 30 to 60% or to a stretching ratio in the longitudinal direction of about 1.2: 1 to 3: 1.
The longitudinal orientation is generally effected with a device which comprises a group of closely spaced parallel rollers (generally referred to as slow rollers) and then a group of closely spaced parallel rollers which are driven at a higher speed (fast rollers ).
The slow rollers are maintained at an elevated temperature of about 93 to 1770 ° C. by passing heated oil through them or using other heating media. The high-speed rollers are generally designed for the passage of cooling water and can be run with cooling or in the neutral state.
The temperature of the layer film during longitudinal stretching is generally between about 104 and 1490 ° C. at the point at which the actual stretching takes place.
The stretching speed can have very different values depending on factors such as the specific composition of the films to be laminated, the particular device used, the degree of longitudinal orientation to be achieved, the desired thickness of the oriented polypropylene composite film and the desired balance of the physical and optical properties. It is generally between about 3 and 305 m / min., With a range of about 30 to 122 m / min. is preferred.
The resulting oriented composite material has extremely strong adhesion between its layers and can be heat sealed using conventional heating devices without any special pretreatment or coating treatment being necessary.
It has also been shown that longitudinal stretching after transverse stretching leads to an essentially balanced, biaxially oriented polypropylene composite film. According to a preferred embodiment, the heat-sealable thermoplastic film is applied to the unbalanced, biaxially oriented polypropylene film after exiting the tenter frame. The film layers are then stretched lengthways by passing them over a series of slow and fast rollers as above. The rotational speeds of the rollers are adjusted so that the film layers are stretched to a stretching ratio of about 1.3 to 4.0, preferably about 2.0 to 3.0.
The amount of longitudinal stretch that is introduced to achieve the desired, balanced, biaxially oriented layered film depends on the particular film combinations to be laminated. For a polypropylene-polyethylene composite, a longitudinal stretch ratio of about 2.0 to 3.0 is preferred.
In addition to the excellent adhesion between its layers, this special composite material is characterized by having approximately the same degree of orientation in both the longitudinal and transverse directions and having approximately the same properties in both directions, such as tensile modulus, tensile strength, elongation, impact strength and shrinkage force, whereby the birefringence is also practically eliminated.
The polypropylene base film for the purposes of the invention can be obtained by various known technical methods, e.g. B. by spraying a tubular film, pressing out a flat film in a casting process or calendering.
The thickness of the polypropylene base film used in the lamination depends on the desired thickness of the end product. In the case of flexible packaging composite films, the thickness can range from about 0.005 to 2.5 mm, with a range from about 0.076 to 0.15 mm being preferred. The thickness of the thermoplastic film to be laminated with the base film can range from approximately 0.005 to 0.5 mm and is preferably approximately 0.0076 to 0.025 mm. Preferably used as material for the heat-sealable thermoplastic films are materials such as polyethylene, Polyäthylemnisch- polymers, polyallomers, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or other modified films of the saran type, polyvinyl alcohol, vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers, nitrocellulose and mixtures and copolymers of the same.
However, for the purposes of the invention, any film that is heat-sealable at a temperature below the softening point of the poly propylene base film can be used as a heat-sealable thermoplastic film. Due to its good heat-sealing properties, polyethylene has proven to be particularly favorable for the production of the composite film according to the invention.
The following examples of the lamination of polypropylene film with various thermoplastic materials serve to illustrate the invention, without the invention being restricted to them.
Example I.
Structure of a polyethylene-polypropylene
Composite material
A polypropylene base sheet approximately 0.127 mm thick is conventionally made by forcing a polypropylene melt web into a water bath system; the extrusion speed is about 53.3 m / min. The film is then preheated and longitudinally stretched in the manner described above by passing it over a series of rollers heated to about 1350 ° C. Immediately thereafter, two continuous polyethylene filaments are placed on both sides of the base film, which are located on rolls arranged adjacent to the top and bottom of the polypropylene web. The thickness of the polyethylene film is approximately 0.018 mm.
The laminate exhibits very poor adhesion at this stage in the process, with the polyethylene layer having some tendency to separate from the polypropylene and to wrap around the idle rollers present in the system. The coating material can be easily removed by pulling it apart by hand. This initial sheet material is fed into a tenter frame enclosed by an oven. The film layers are preheated in the oven to a temperature of approximately 1490 ° C. by means of directed air. The film combination is at a stretching speed of about 8400% / min. stretched in the transverse direction to 7.7 times its original width.
The film obtained has the following properties:
Table I Average Thickness mm 0.02327 haze,% 0.6 gloss,% 80.5 tensile impact strength, MR *, 291.45 kg cm / cm2 yield strength, MR *, kg / cm2 267.2 tensile strength , MR *, kg / cm2 405.0 module, MS, kg / cm2 9970 Heat seal strength * *, g / 2.5 cm 220 'MR = machine or lengthwise direction.
Heat sealing at 1210 C and 4.6 g / cm2 and 3½ seconds exposure time; a control sample made from non-laminated, oriented polypropylene is not at all sealable under these sealing conditions.
As the values in Table II show, the oriented composite material of Example 1 obtained according to the invention has excellent seal strength, while the non-oriented layer material can be stripped with negligible force and oriented, non-laminated polypropylene is not sealable at all. One continues to make low-pressure heat seals with heating of the
Film at 1160 C and exposure to a pressure of 4.6 g / cm2 with an exposure time of 3 t / 2 sec. And high-pressure crimp seals at 2.8 kg / cm2,
110 to 1270 C and 10 seconds exposure time.

Example 2
The procedure is as in Example 1, with the modification that the polypropylene base sheet is laminated with polyethylene sheets 0.0127 mm thick. The composite film obtained has the following properties:
Table III Average thickness, mm 0.01344 haze,% 1.30 gloss,% 88.70 tensile impact strength, MR, kg cm / cm2 516.46 strength at the yield point,
MR, kg / cm2 274.9 tensile strength, MR, kg / cm2 302.3 modulus, MR, kg / cm2 10476 heat seal strength, g / 2.5 cm 163
The heat sealing takes place under the same conditions as in Example 1; a control sample made from unlaminated, oriented polypropylene is not at all sealable under these sealing conditions.
The above examples thus show that excellent heat seal strengths can be obtained with the oriented composite products according to the invention without the need for the costly and time-consuming coating and other treatments of the prior art. The heat-sealable polypropylene composite material is also obtained without the need for major changes to the apparatus or process with which non-laminated, oriented polypropylene films are produced.
The following example explains the applicability of heat-sealable thermoplastic films other than polyethylene films in the lamination process according to the invention.
Example 3
The procedure of Example 1 is repeated with the exception that instead of polyethylene film for double-sided lamination of the polypropylene base film web, propylene-ethylene-polyallomer films (manufactured by the Tennessee Eastman Company, under the trade mark TENITE -SB22DF) with an average thickness of 0.018 mm used. The term polyallomers is used to identify a class of polymers as distinct from homopolymers or copolymers; These polymers are an example of the allomerism, which in polymer chemistry defines a constancy of the crystal shape with varying chemical composition.
Polyallomers are crystalline, but differ from the commercially available crystalline homopolymers in that they are formed by two or more monomers (in the present example propylene and ethylene) and have a superior combination of physical properties (compare HJ Hagemeyer, New Plastic: Polyallomers in Modern Plastic, June 1962).
The resulting polypropylene (ethylene-propylene3-polyallomer composite film) has the following properties:
Table IV Average thickness, mm 0.015 haze,% 1.3 gloss,% 84.9 tensile impact strength, MR, kg cm / cm2 244.30 strength at the yield point,
MR, kg / cm2 367.0 tensile strength, MR, kg / cm2 682.0 modulus, MR, kg / cm2 13921 Heat seal strength, g / 2.5 cm 250
The heat seal strength is determined on a heat seal that was produced at 1770 C and 4.6 g / cm2 pressure and a dwell time of 3.5 seconds.
Unlaminated, oriented polypropylene film gives a heat seal strength of 30 g / 2 t / 2 cm under the same sealing conditions.
In this way, the invention provides an economical method for producing relatively thin layers of heat-sealable, firmly adhering material on polypropylene films.
