Description

Tire for a rim with a safety flange The invention relates to a tire for a rim with an internal safety flange, for example as indicated at A in FIG. 1. This protruding flange retains the bead of the tire and prevents it from moving laterally inward when the tire is subjected to a significant lateral force or when the tire is deflated.

However, this rim has the drawback of hindering the positioning of the tire on the rim due to the fact that during assembly, the bead must cross this rim.

To facilitate this mounting, the invention provides for making grooves on at least one bead which must rest on the corresponding wing of the rim, making the base of the bead more flexible and allowing it to cross the inner safety rim more easily.

The invention is illustrated in FIG. 1 which shows in cross section the tire mounted on its rim and in FIG. 2 which is a partial elevation view.

As usual, the tire 1 comprises beads 2 reinforced by one or more inextensible bead wires 3. When the tire is mounted on the rim 4 the beads are applied by the inflation pressure against the outer edges 5 and the underside of the tire beads. these beads rest on the wings 6 or rest of the rim.

The lower surface of the heels has transverse grooves 7 giving this surface a wavy shape as shown in FIG. 2. In the mounted position, the beads of the tire therefore rest on the flanges 6 of the rim by the crests of these undulations, which is sufficient to ensure good seating and good centering of the tire on the rim. However, the grooves 7 soften the lower part of the heels sufficiently to facilitate the crossing of the inner safety edge A of the. rim by the bead at the time of assembly.

Once mounted, the ribs located between the grooves 7 prevent the lateral displacement of the bead by abutting against the flange A. The width, pitch and depth of these corrugations are conditioned by the dimensions of the tire and by the height protruding from the safety edge, and they may therefore vary from one tire to another. These grooves are preferably provided on the two beads so as not to impose a mounting direction on the tire, but it is obvious that they can only be provided on the single bead having to cross the rim A.

On the other hand, although the transverse orientation of the grooves is preferable to facilitate the deformation of the rubber of the ribs when crossing the rim A, these grooves can be arranged otherwise, for example at an angle.

The invention relates more particularly to tubeless tires and in this case the usual sealing means between the tire and the flanges 5 of the rim and such that the grooves 8 of the bead are retained.
