<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Electric motor-driven hand tool with an electronic speed control device The invention relates to an electric motor-driven hand tool with an electronic speed control device, a housing with the electric motor, the armature and field winding of which are connected in series.
It can be a universal hand drill.
The hand tool according to the invention is characterized by the electronic speed control device housed in the housing with a controllable silicon semiconductor circuit, which is connected in series with the motor and provided for connection to an alternating current source, by a variable resistor intended to control the motor speed and by one on the housing arranged button, which is mechanically coupled to the movable connection of the resistor, the voltage applied to the motor and the current flowing through it and thus the motor speed are dependent on the control device that can be influenced by the button.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 shows the electrical diagram of the speed control device, Fig. 2 shows a side elevation view of a hand-operated drilling tool driven by a power source.
According to FIG. 1, two power lines 10 and 11 are provided. They are connected to a 60Hz AC power source. The applied voltage is 117 volts. A force generating device 12 is provided between the lines 10, 11. The force generating device is a universal motor. The motor 12 has a field winding 13 and an armature winding 14. These windings are connected to one another in series in the usual manner.
To control the current flow through the motor 12 and the voltage applied to it, a controlled silicon rectifier 15 is connected in series with the motor. The controlled silicon rectifier 15 has an anode 16, a cathode 17 and a control electrode 18. It should be noted that the controlled silicon rectifier 15 has the task of allowing the alternating current to pass through during one half period and of blocking the flow of the alternating current during the other half period. The controlled silicon rectifier cuts off the current flow when the voltage applied to the conductors 10 and 11 has the same polarity as the reverse voltage of the rectifier.
To control the average voltage on the motor, the pulse width of the current pulses passed through is changed.
If current is to be supplied to the motor 12 during both half-periods of the alternating voltage applied between the lines 10 and 11, a switch 19 connected to the controlled silicon rectifier 15 in a shunt can be closed. When this switch is closed, the motor 12 is fed directly from the lines 10 and 11 without the interposition of the controlled silicon rectifier.
In order to ensure that the controlled silicon rectifier 15 becomes conductive during one half cycle of the alternating current, the control electrode 18 is connected via the control diode 20 to the common connection 21 between a capacitor 22 and a variable resistor 23, the capacitor 22 being connected to the Cathode 17 of the controlled silicon rectifier 15 and the variable resistor 23 is connected to the anode 16 of the controlled silicon rectifier 15.
A limiting resistor 24 can be used between the common connection 21 and the variable resistor 23 in order to be sure that the voltage between the common connection 21 and the anode 16 does not fall below a certain minimum value.
The variable resistor 23 has an adjustable contact 25.
It can be moved in order to be able to change the resistor, which is connected in series with the capacitor 22. The voltage across the capacitor 22 is used to control the silicon rectifier 15. If the adjustable contact 25 is moved in the direction of the arrow 26, the voltage across the capacitor 22 is increased. The consequence of this is that the controlled silicon rectifier 15 is made conductive during the entire half cycle of the alternating current, so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the motor 12 is supplied with correspondingly more current and a greater voltage is applied to it. If the adjustable contact 25 is moved in the opposite direction, this results in a corresponding reduction in the voltage on and the current through the motor 12.
The variable resistor 23 changes the current flow through the capacitor 22 and thus influences the magnitude of the voltage across the capacitor 22. If this voltage reaches a certain value, a current pulse is fed to the control electrode 18 of the controlled silicon rectifier via the diode 20, whereby this rectifier becomes live . The current pulse depends, among other things, on the properties of the diode.
Since only a fairly small current flows through the variable resistor 23 and also because the voltage drop across the controlled silicon rectifier 15 is comparatively small, the heat generated in these parts is correspondingly low. As a result, the control devices, which are connected to the controlled silicon rectifier 15, and the controlled silicon rectifier itself can be arranged in the housing of the hand tool. This can be a hollow handle, which is indicated by the dashed line 27 in FIG. 1.
Another common part of the tool, driven by a power source, with the drive device in the form of a universal motor can also be arranged in the handle in a conventional manner. Because of the relatively low heat generation of the control circuits, the amount of heat generated is relatively small and not uncomfortable for the operator who has to touch the handle. If the heating is too great, the circuits can be arranged in the cooling air flow of the motor housing.
It is appropriate that the variable resistor 23 can be changed by the operator. A key 28 is used for this. It is slidably mounted in an opening of the handle 27 in a known manner. A spring 29 is used to press the button 28 in the rest position against a stop, not shown.
A mechanical connection, which is indicated by the dashed line 30, is used to mechanically couple the button 28 to the adjustable contact 25. Here, the arrangement is chosen so that when the button 28 is pressed against the spring 29, the movable contact 25 is moved in the direction of the arrow 26 in order to reduce the effective resistance, which is connected in series with the capacitor 22, so that the voltage applied to the motor 12 and the current flowing through it increase as described above.
A mechanical connection, which is indicated by the dashed line 31, serves to couple the button 28 and the switch 19 to one another. The switch 19 is arranged so that it is closed by the button 28 shortly before it reaches its other end position. When the switch 19 connected in parallel with the controlled silicon rectifier 15 closes, the motor 12 is connected directly to the lines 10, 11 and thus the maximum power is output.
2 shows a manually controllable drill 32 driven by a power source. The above-described control device is arranged in this drill. The drilling device 32 has a conventional chuck 33. The latter is connected to a shaft 34. This is stored in the housing of the hand tool by a suitable device. On the shaft 34, a gear 35 is attached to the other end of the shaft. The teeth of this gear are in mesh with a toothing on one end of a shaft 36 which forms part of the motor 12. The shaft 36 is mounted in the bearings 37 and a fan 38 is attached to it in order to cool the motor 12 in a manner known per se. The shaft 36 forms part of a rotor 39.
Armature windings 14 are located on the rotor 39. The rotor 39 has a conventional commutator 40. Brush holder devices are denoted by 41.
A carrier 42 is connected to the stator 44, which carries the field windings 13, with the aid of a fastening means 43. The carrier 4.2 serves to hold the controlled silicon rectifier 15, the diode 20, the permanently installed resistor 24 and the capacitor 22.
The key 28 is mounted in an opening 45 of the handle 27 of the drilling device 32 in such a way that the key can be moved back and forth between a rest position and a working position. The handle 27 is a pistol-like grip. In the rest position, the button 28 is partially outside the handle and in the working position it is more or less pushed into the handle. In Fig. 2, the button 28 is shown in its rest position. One end of the variable resistor 23 protrudes into the recess 28a of the button. The variable resistor 23 can consist of carbon or similar materials and be rail-shaped.
The recess 28a also serves to accommodate the spring 29. The recess 28a has a small blind hole 30 at its inner end which serves to receive the end of a displaceable piece 25 which forms part of the variable resistance. The other end of the variable resistor 23 is attached to a bracket 45. This carrier 46 is mounted in the handle 27 of the hand tool by means that are suitable for this.
The button 28 has a depending finger 31. This finger 31 can be brought into engagement with a button 19a on the switch 19 when the button is pushed all the way in. If the finger 31 actuates the button 19a, the switch 19 closes, whereby the controlled silicon rectifier 15 is bridged and the motor 12 is fed directly via the power lines 10 and 11. An additional switch 48 can be built into one of the two power lines 10 or 11. It has a depending button 49 and this can be brought into engagement with button 28 as soon as it is moved inward.
The switch 48 serves as security that the circuit is actually opened when the button is completely in its rest position.
As can easily be seen from FIG. 2, the speed control device can be accommodated in the housing of a hand tool without it being necessary to increase the overall size of the hand tool. The variable resistor 23, which is mechanically coupled to the button in order to be actuated by it, can easily be arranged in the handle of the tool and does not cause any significant heating of the tool handle. The variable resistor 23 does not get very warm because only a fairly small current flows through it.
The variable resistance is in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Control circuit of the controllable silicon diode and not in the main circuit.
Apart from the fact that it is made possible to keep the overall size of the tool driven by a power source relatively small, the speed control device has another very important advantage.
This advantage consists in the fact that the variable resistor 23 is mechanically coupled to the button 28. Thus, the hand tool can be handled easily. The speed of the tool motor can also be controlled by the same hand. This is very important because it allows the hand tool to be handled in rather tight or difficult positions and the operator can only use the hand tool with one hand to carry out the preliminary process. The speed control device according to the invention, which is under the influence of the key, also enables the tool clamping device 33 to be operated at very low revolutions per minute, e.g.
B. at 60 - 1000 revolutions / min., Without the tool motor or parts of the electronic control being heated. This very low speed is achieved by pressing the button inwards just a little bit in the handle. A further inward movement of the key will of course cause the motor 12 to rotate at a higher speed. As a result of the small number of revolutions of a clamped drill, it is possible to start drilling a hole at a certain point without the risk of the drill bit jumping off when drilling the hole.
In the exemplary embodiment, only a hand drill with speed control has been described. However, such speed control can be used with many electrically powered hand tools.
