Wall of annular section resistant to high temperatures and one face of which is intended to come into contact with a flow of fluid at high speed Wall of annular section resistant to high temperatures and of which one face is intended to come into contact with a flow of fluid high speed.
The present invention relates to an annular section wall resistant to high temperatures and one face of which is intended to come into contact with a flow of fluid at high speed and formed of lamellar elements of fabric, impregnated with resin and placed therein. 'against each other so as to overlap.
This wall can, for example constitute part of the outer wall of a projectile element which, after the projectile has been propelled to a height greater than the thickness of the atmosphere, re-enters the atmosphere and falls back to the atmosphere. ground. In this case, this wall will be subjected to extraordinarily high stresses due to the friction of the air and to the heat developed. This wall could also constitute the ejection nozzle of a rocket engine and it will, in this case also, be subjected to extraordinarily violent stresses.
The known walls of this kind using lamellar elements extending parallel to the direction of the flow of fluid are not satisfactory because these elements tend to be torn off by the violence of the flow. On the other hand, if the elements which form the wall of the body are perpendicular to the direction of the flow, there may be cracks between these elements, these cracks passing through the entire wall of the body and the heat being able to penetrate rapidly into the body. inside the body by these cracks.
The aim of the present invention is to remedy these difficulties. For this, the wall according to the invention is characterized in that each element is arranged along a surface of revolution with a rectilinear generatrix forming with the axis of the wall an angle other than 900, the edges of the elements which are on the wall. face of the wall of the tines to come into contact with the flow each being slightly set back with respect to that of the adjacent element immediately downstream with respect to the direction of the flow.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, various embodiments of the wall according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a partially cutaway side elevational view of the first embodiment, constituting a protective wall for the head of a projectile. Fig. 1 shows a wall 10 constituting the protective wall of the head of a projectile intended to be propelled to an altitude greater than the normal height of the atmosphere, this head then entering the atmosphere.
Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 show construction details of this wall. The conical body of this wall is formed of an elongated strip 16 (FIG. 2) formed of a fiberglass fabric impregnated with resin. This strip 16 could also be formed of fabric of asbestos fiber or other heat resistant fibrous material. The strip is impregnated with a thermosetting resin such as phenolformaldeide resin. It has a series of triangular notches 17 formed in one of its edges 18 and extending transversely with respect to the strip 16.
The latter is wound on a mandrel 19 (FIG. 3) formed of a metal tubular element with a thin wall. This mandrel comprises a main part 21 of frustoconical shape and an end frustoconical part 22 forming a flange. The opening angle of the flange is approximately 25 to 30 greater than that of the main wall 21. The strip 16 is wound on the mandrel as shown in FIG. 3. For this, we start from the flange 22 whose angle determines the oblique position of the turns relative to the axis of the body.
The turns are wound on the mandrel in such a way that the notched edge 18 is against the mandrel and that the various turns overlap exactly. When the tape 16 is wound in this way, the corners of each triangular notch 17 come together slightly. Fig. 3 shows the turns forming the lamellar elements wound on the mandrel before the molding operation. We notice that the edges of the different elements overlap each other like the tiles of a roof.
The purpose of the molding operation is to amalgamate the elements by means of resin and to treat this resin under pressure. The mandrel 19 carrying the elements 16 is placed on a ring of felt 23 itself placed on a table 23a. A tubular envelope 24 formed from a sheet of flexible material is placed on the winding 26 so as to cover it entirely. This envelope 24 is placed such that one of its edges 27 extends below the felt ring, while the other edge 28 is folded inside the mandrel 19. To hold the edge upper 28 of the casing 24 in place in the mandrel, an adhesive is used. An opening 29 is made in the felt ring 23 in the vicinity of its outer edge.
Through this opening to which is connected a pipe 31, a vacuum is created in the space between the casing 24 and the mandrel 19. This vacuum has the effect of forcing the casing 24 to apply closely to the winding. of the strip 16 and to compress it giving it its final shape.
When a vacuum has thus been created between the mandrel 19 and the casing 24, these elements are brought to a temperature sufficient to allow the impregnation of the resin. During shaping, the lamellar elements move slightly, approaching a position parallel to the surface of the body, so that if the initial angle of the generatrices of the elements had the indicated value: higher, this angle iprernd finally a value of 20 to 21 0. At this time the resin is treated in the usual way so as to constitute a compact body.
As seen in Figs. 1 and 5, the body 13 is assembled to a head 12 so as to form with this head the protective wall. The head 12 can also be formed from strips of resin-impregnated fiberglass fabric. It can be attached to the body 13 by an adhesive.
The lamellar elements of the wall described are arranged so as to form with 1: a face of the body which is in contact with air an acute angle of small opening so that the effect of the air pressure on the outside of the wall is to compress the elements against each other. The oblique position of the elements with respect to the direction of the air flow reduces the risks of the elements being torn off since each of them extends for the most part in the thickness of the wall. However, the heat transfers are reduced since each element has a relatively considerable width.
Figs. 6 and 7 show an ejection nozzle 33 forming part of a rocket engine 34. This nozzle is constituted by a coil forming an annular wall and the turns of which constitute lamellar elements oblique with respect to the surfaces of this wall. The hot gases escaping from the rocket pass through the nozzle at very high speed.
The nozzle 33 is manufactured on a two-piece mandrel consisting of the elements 35 and 36 (Fig. 8). When they are assembled, as seen in fig. 9, these elements have a continuous outer surface on which is wound a strip 37 of resin impregnated glass fabric. The resin which permeates this fabric is the same as in the case of the first embodiment. The portion 35 of the mandrel has a tenon 39 which is engaged in a housing 41 that the portion 36 presents in order to maintain the two parts of the mandrel in line with one another.
To wind the strip 37 onto the mandrel, one starts at the widest part of the portion 35 of the mandrel and progressively advances towards the narrower portion. The arrangement of the lamellar elements formed by the winding 43 relative to the mandrel is shown in FIG. 9. The elements remain at an angle at least approximately constant to the inner face of the nozzle until the narrowest portion 44 of the mandrel is reached.
As seen in fig. 8, the strip has notches along one of its edges. At a certain distance beyond the narrowest portion 44, the elements lie substantially parallel to the axis of the nozzle. In this region 45, the nozzle has an approximately frustoconical shape. The portion of the strip 37 which is used to form the part 45 of the wall of the nozzle is devoid of notches since the turns of the strip are then cylindrical.
The winding formed on the described mandrel is then die-cast using, for example, an envelope molding technique, after which it is heated, so as to amalgamate the turns of the strip and to treat the resin which permeates. the band.
On the nozzle body thus formed, an outer winding formed of a fiberglass rope impregnated with a thermosetting resin is placed. This winding 48 consolidates the wall of the nozzle and increases its resistance to brushing due to the flow of gases. On the main portion of the nozzle, several layers of the bead 48 can be wound. Then, the nozzle is heated to fix and process the resin of the outer coil. This outer winding can extend only over part of the length of the nozzle. but it is preferable that it extends over its entire length.
The thickness of this outer winding is chosen sufficiently large so that it is possible to cut threads inside this mass, as can be seen in FIG. 12, these threads allowing the attachment of the nozzle to the engine body.
