Superconducting coil It is well known that the transition from the superconducting to the normally conductive state of a superconducting coil depends not only on the temperature, but also on the current density in the superconductor and the magnetic field to which it is exposed. When dimensioning a solenoid, the limit value of the load cannot theoretically be determined exactly. One is therefore dependent on an experiment to determine this limit value, the knowledge of which is of interest for an economical utilization of the coil.
For this purpose, the current load on the coil is increased until transition, that is, the transition from the superconducting to the normally conducting state, occurs. The transition starts at one point and spreads over the entire coil. So that the local heating is not too great, one can, as has already been proposed, provide means which accelerate the propagation of the transition over the entire coil.
Such means consist either of creating a good heat transfer between the individual turns and windings or by bridging coil parts by means of resistors to shift the magnetic flow to the coil parts that have not yet transitioned. Despite these measures, it can happen, and it has already been shown in practical tests, that a coil that has gone into transition can only be loaded with, for example, 80% of the previous limit power, so that greater damage occurs during the first transition.
The present invention presents a superconducting coil with which the limit value of the permissible load can be determined in such a way that operation is then possible without a major loss of load capacity. In the case of a superconducting coil, the winding of which is subdivided into several partial windings separated from one another by thermal insulation, this is achieved according to the invention in that resistors are provided at the electrical connection points of the partial windings for the transfer of heat and electrical taps led to the outside.
The invention is based on the idea of not weakening the effect of the transition occurring in the practical determination of the limit value of the excitation, but rather of localizing it. Damage is therefore consciously accepted. The damaged part can easily be rendered harmless by bridging taps already provided on the coil without mechanical intervention in the coil. The localization of the damage is achieved by dividing the entire winding of the coil into many partial windings that are thermally separated from each other and that the electrical connection points of the partial windings are decoupled by resistors for the transmission of heat.
However, the damage to the partial winding to be sacrificed must not be to such an extent that it also affects the neighboring partial windings, for example through arcing. According to a development of the invention, means are therefore also provided in order to propagate the transition occurring in a partial winding as quickly as possible over the relevant partial winding. It should be noted that when using means that accelerate the propagation of the transition by shifting the magnetic flow from turns that have gone into transition to neighboring turns, this effect on the winding to be sacrificed

remains limited.
A short-circuit winding must therefore be provided in this case, which takes over the magnetic flow instead of the other partial windings.
The invention is explained by means of an exemplary embodiment using a figure.
The figure shows a superconducting coil, the winding 1 of which is divided into partial windings 2, 3, 4 and 5, which are separated from one another by thermal insulation 6, 7 and 8. Thermal resistors 9, 10 and 11 are provided at the electrical connection points of the partial windings. These consist of a metal jacket with a large heat capacity with good heat transfer to the superconductor. In addition, the connection points are provided with taps 12, 13 and 14 that are led to the outside.
The contact points between the taps and the coil wire are expediently placed in a space with a lower magnetic field, since the superconducting properties of the coil wire are generally somewhat worsened by the contact and it is better if they are exposed to a smaller magnetic field. The contact points are arranged, for example, on the outer jacket of the coil within the thermal insulation. The coil beginning 15 and the coil end 16, like the taps, are led to the outside through the thermal insulation 17.
With the symbols 18 and 19, the supply and discharge of the cooling liquid are indicated.
If the superconducting coil is put into operation and the current supply through the coil ends is slowly increased, then at any point when the critical current density and the critical field strength are exceeded, the coil will change from the superconducting state to the normal conducting state. It is assumed that this transition occurs in partial winding 5. It spreads from the point of origin within the partial winding to the thermal resistance 11.
The path directly to the adjacent partial winding 4 is blocked by the thermal insulation 8, the path via the galvanic connection between the partial windings 4 and 5 by the thermal resistor 11. The effect of the transition is consequently limited to the area of the partial winding 5. The taps 12 to 14 already give you the opportunity to recognize the partial winding in which the transition occurs during the first switch-on. For this purpose, one only needs to record the voltages between the taps using an oscilloscope.
There is also the possibility later of using a resistance measurement to determine the partial winding that has become bad without intervening in the coil. With such a coil, you can easily determine the limit value of the load and the location of the damage. For further operation you only need to ensure that the limit value is no longer reached and that the damaged coil part is bridged via the taps that are brought out. This can also be done without mechanical intervention in the coil.
In the case of magnet coils with a very high energy content, as already mentioned, there is a risk that during the transition the local heating will be so strong that the insulation to the neighboring partial winding will be damaged and thus a larger part, perhaps even the entire coil, will be affected. Further measures are therefore advantageously provided that accelerate the propagation of the transition over the relevant partial winding. In the exemplary embodiment, this purpose is served by the metal pieces 20, which are in the form of a film and which surround the partial windings.
Due to their low thermal resistance, they quickly divert the local heating to adjacent turns of the same partial windings and, on the one hand, cause cooling at the transition point and, on the other hand, heat the neighboring turns, i.e. H. a faster expansion of the transition. Which effect predominates depends on the dimensioning of the metal pieces. If they are equipped with a very large heat capacity, for example by being provided with cavities through which the cooling liquid is passed, they will only heat themselves up slightly; so the first effect predominates.
If they have a smaller heat capacity and a very high thermal conductivity, then the heat spreads quickly from the point of origin over the entire partial winding. So the second effect predominates. The application of resistance bridges between the windings or the embedding of the coil wire in a conductive lacquer 21 also serve to accelerate the propagation of the transition.
For this purpose, a material must be selected as the material which has the effect that in the superconducting state the current flows through the coil wire and in the normally conducting state the current essentially flows through the conductive lacquer. With this prerequisite, in the event of a transition in one turn, the magnetic flow is shifted to the other turns.
So that this flow through is not absorbed by the other partial windings - these should remain in the superconducting state for as long as possible and not increase their current intensity - but remain practically in the partial winding to be sacrificed, it is necessary when using resistance bridges or conductive lacquer to remove the metal pieces Train 20 as short-circuit rings. Due to the much longer time constant, these then take over practically the entire energy content.
