<I>Exemple 3</I> On peut préparer les <RTI

A suitable generally applicable procedure is the synthesis of a hydroxybenzothiophene and the subsequent conversion of this compound to N-alkyl- or N, N-dialkyl-carbamates or equivalent alkenyl- or aryl-carbamates or into other desired derivatives.
4-Hydroxybenzothiophene can be prepared according to the multistage synthesis of Fieser and Kennely
EMI0002.0055
<I> Example 2 </I> One can also carry out the synthesis of the product of example 1 by the reaction of 4-hydroxybenzothiophene (A) with phosgene (B)
in the presence of a base (for example alkali metal hydroxides or tertiary organic amines such as
EMI0002.0065
(Journal of the American Chemical Society, <I> 57, </I> page 1615, 1935).
The following examples, in which the parts are expressed by weight, show how the active compounds of the composition according to the invention can be prepared.
<I> Example 1 </I> The N-methylcarbamate derivative of benzothiophene is prepared as follows: it is introduced into a reaction vessel fitted with a condenser. and from a drying tube 140 parts of 4-hydroxybenzothiophene, 61 parts of methyl isocyanate, 1 part of dibutyltin diacetate and 225 parts of toluene. The solution is stirred at room temperature for 24 hours using a stirrer. The solution is then cooled abruptly and 150 parts of solid product are obtained.
This substance has a melting point of 129 C and presents the following values on analysis:

<tb> Nitrogen <SEP> 6.8 <SEP> 6.8 The infrared spectrum of the product is also compatible with the structure of 4-benzothienyl N-methylcarbamate.
The reaction of this example can be illustrated as follows: pyridine and triethylamine) in. obtaining 4-benzothenyl chloroformate (C) and then the subsequent reaction of this intermediate with methylamine (D) obtaining as product 4-benzothienyl N-methylcarbamate (E)
. This series of reactions is shown below:
EMI0003.0001
Other amines can be used in place of methylamine (D) by obtaining other corresponding carbamates, for example cyclohexylamine, crotylamine, allylamine, and the like.
The following description indicates in more detail the operating mode of this example.
To a stirred mixture of 128 parts (1.3 M) of phosgen.e in 3.00 parts of toluene is added a solution of 150 parts (1.0 M) of 4-hydroxybenzothiophene and 127 parts (1.05 M ) N, N-dimethylaniline in 600 parts of toluene. The reaction mixture is then stirred at 30 ° C. for one hour. The mixture is cooled to 20 C and slowly added to 600 parts of water maintained at 5-10 C.
The excess phosgene is then hydrolysed and the N, N-dimethylaniline hydrochloride is removed in the aqueous phase. The toluene is removed from the oily layer under reduced pressure and the 4-benzothienyl chloroformate produced by distillation is purified.
To a stirred solution of 212 parts (1.0 M) of 4-benzothienyl 4-chloroformate in 800 parts of toluene is added 310 parts (2 M) of 20% aqueous monomethylamine. The reaction mixture is stirred at 10-15 ° C for 30 minutes to terminate the reaction.
The solid product is filtered off, washed thoroughly with water to remove all the methylamine hydrochloride, then washed with toluene and air dried. The 4-benzothienyl N-methylcarbamate thus obtained melts at 129 ° C. The yield is of the order of 90%. <I> Example 3 </I> We can prepare the <RTI

<I> Example 4 </I> Another procedure for preparing N-alkyl- and N, N-dialkylcarbamates is to react a hydroxybenzothiophene with the corresponding carbamyl halide.
This operation is illustrated by the reaction of 4-hydroxybenzothiophene and dimethylcarbamyl chloride in the presence of a tertiary organic amine (eg triethylamine) dissolved in benzene at a temperature of about 80 C for 3-4. hours, a yield of 80-90% of N is obtained,

<tb> Nitrogen <SEP> 6.76 <SEP> 6.87 Generally speaking, when using the isocyanate processes of Examples 1 and 5-13, or the carbamyl chloride process of Example 4 , it is preferable to use a slight molar excess of 2-10% of the isocyanate or carbamyl chloride compared to hydroxybenzothiophene,
in order to ensure a complete reaction. The reaction temperature is not critical and can vary from room temperature up to 100 ° C or more. However, it has been found that a reaction temperature of 25 C to 90 C is very satisfactory under most conditions.
The reaction can be carried out below or above atmospheric pressure, but it has been found that a pressure approximately equal to one atmosphere or slightly above is very satisfactory. Any inert solvent such as benzene, toluene, diethyl ether, etc. can be used.
as a solvent for the reaction of isocyanate or carbamyl chloride with hydroxylated intermediates. Tin compounds such as dibutyltin diacetate and tertiary amines such as triethylamine or pyridine can be used as catalysts, but the reaction proceeds also in their absence, although to some extent more slowly. .
Likewise, the conditions set out above for the reactions of Examples 2 and 3 are not limited to the proportions, temperatures, pressures, etc. exact, indicated in said examples.
The alkenyl- and aryl-carbamate compounds are prepared in the same manner as that set out above for the alkyl compounds. using the equivalent alkenyl or aryl compounds in place of the aforementioned alkyl compounds as reactants. Thus, we can compare Examples 7, 8 and 9 with Example 5.
Likewise, the thiocarbamates of the invention having a -OCSNRR 'group can be formed, in the same manner as that shown above, by using thioequivalent compounds, for example by using thioisocyanates, thiophosgene,
thiochloroformates or thiocarbamyl halides. Those compounds having a sulfur atom bonded to a carbon atom instead of an oxygen atom in the isocyanates, phosgene, chloroformates or carbamyl halides used to prepare the carbamates of the general formula above having the radical -OCONRR '. Partially hydrogenated carbamates, such as 2-carbamates,
3-dihydro-benzothienyl or 2,3-dihydro-benzothienyl thiocarbamates which can be prepared by selective hydrogenation of the benzothiophene ring.
The compounds of the general formula above have been found to exhibit considerable biological activity and to be potent pesticides when used against important agricultural pests, including insects, fungi. , mites and nematodes. These compounds can be used in various ways to achieve the biological action. They can be applied as such, as a solids or as a spray, but they are preferably applied as toxic components in pesticide compositions and the like.
Compositions can be applied as a powder, as liquid spray, or as gas propelled spray and may contain, in addition to a carrier, additives such as agents. emulsification, wetting agents, binding agents, liquid compressed gases, odorants, stabilizers and the like.
A wide variety of solid and liquid vehicles can be used in the preparation of the present pesticidal composition. Among the liquid vehicles, there may be mentioned water; organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, amides and esters; -mineral oils such as petroleum lam pant, light oils and medium oils; and vegetable oils such as cottonseed oil.
Examples of solid vehicles include talc, benzonite, diatomaceous earth, pyrophyllite, fuller's earth, gypsum, flours from cottonseed and nutshells, and various natural clays. and synthetic having a pH of not greater than about 9.5.
The exact amount at which the compounds of the invention can be used in the pesticide compositions or the like can vary quite widely and depends to some extent on the type of composition into which the substance is to be. used, the method of application, the nature of the condition to be checked and other commonly encountered factors. Concentrations as low as 0.0001 Vo can be used. Generally, however, compositions containing about 0.05%, by weight, either in a liquid or solid carrier, provide excellent results.
For some needs, higher concentrations may be desirable up to a maximum of about 10%. Liquid carriers which can be employed include water, organic solvents and mineral oils as well as other solvents or suspending agents.
Solid carriers which can be employed include talc, bentonite, diatomaceous earth, pyrophyllite, fuller's earth, gypsum, flours derived from cottonseed and walnut seeds, the various natural clays and other similar powders.
<I> Example A </I> Three granulated compositions, for application against soil insects, were prepared. In each case, 53.6 parts of 4-benzothienyl N-methylcarbamate was dissolved in 303 parts of a ketone to form a spray solution. For one composition, the solution was sprayed onto 906 parts of montmorillonite clay (0.42-0.84 mm), then the solvent was allowed to evaporate. For a second composition, the solution was sprayed onto 906 parts of corn cob granules and the soil was allowed to evaporate.
For a third composition, the solution was sprayed onto 906 parts of crushed pecan shells and the solvent allowed to evaporate.
The following results are typical of the high biological activity <B> ... </B> of the compounds of the invention used, for example, against classes of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, such as Epilachna varivestis Muls. and Prodenia eridania Cram., etc..
and measured by the LD 50 value (concentration required to destroy 50% of the insects tested). In these tests, the compounds are put into wettable powder formulas, and then diluted with water to the concentrations indicated for the actual chemical. Reference control samples such as DDT etc. are formulated in a similar manner.
Cranberry plants are immersed in the appropriate concentrations of the respective formulations and then allowed to dry. Third instar larvae are then introduced into closed cages with the treated plants and kept under greenhouse conditions for 48 hours after which mortality is counted. Three repeated tests are used for each application quantity and then the LD 50 is calculated from the mortality figures versus the dosage.

evenly with soil containing eggs and galls of the organism of the root gall, Meloidogyne incognita. Single-germ pieces of pre-sprouted Kennebec potato, grown in sand, are then transplanted into treated soil, the optimum age for this transplanting being around 8-10 days.
When obvious signs. development of nematodes are discernible, in untreated controls, in the form of galls on the surface and / or galls on the root system itself, the development of root galls is observed comparatively on the treated plants. Percent root gall reduction was calculated based on the ratio of galls present on treated plants to galls present on untreated controls.
An initial count of galls is carried out on the ground surface. Plants that do not bear any galls or only a few galls are then washed until they are cleared of the soil and a count of the total number of galls present in the root system is taken.
<I> Accaricidal activity </I> The compounds tested are put in the form of pulverulent wettable concentrates by addition to an inert vehicle containing 2% by weight of a wetting agent, and grinding on a ball mill until obtaining a. uniform mixture. The various mixtures are then diluted with water to the concentrations of the active ingredient which are indicated.
Cranberry beds, infested with the spider aphid in various stages of growth, are immersed in appropriate concentrations of the respective compositions and allowed to dry. The treated plants are kept in greenhouse conditions for 72 hours, then the percentage of mortality and the lesions of the plants are observed. Three tests are carried out for each application rate.
The results obtained with examples of pesti cides of general formula above are given in the following table:
