Process for the manufacture of polyesters and their use The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of polymer polyesters, characterized in that at least one polycarboxylic acid, including terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid, is heated. or a functional derivative of these acids, with at least one polyalcohol including tri (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate.
Another subject of the present invention is the use of the product obtained according to this process for coatings of electrical conductors.
It has been found that polyesters obtained by esterification of a polyalcohol such as tri (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate, with a polycarboxy Tic acid such as terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or a functional derivative of these acids have very interesting physical properties, especially elec tric.
Tri (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate can be used as the one and only alcohol, but it can also be replaced in part by one or more other polyalcohols. While only 10% of the total weight of the polyalcohols can consist of tri (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate, at least <B> 50 is preferably employed,
010 </B> of the total weight of the polyalcohols in tri (2 hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate.
On a percent basis of the equivalent amount, preferably at least 25% of the total polyalcohols is tri- (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate.
In normal manufacture of polyesters 15 to 46% of the equivalent amount are represented by reacting carboxylic acids and the difference is represented by polyalcohols; but there must be an excess of alcoholic groups over acidic groups.
All of the constituent polycarboxylic acid may be terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid but also a proportion greater than 80% of the equivalent amount based on a total of 100% of the equivalent amount <RTI
ID = "0001.0064"> of the constituent acid may be formed from a different acid. Preferably at least 50% of the equivalent amount of the acid component is terephthalic acid. The term percent of the equivalent amount is conventionally used in the art of this art, in that the components, the alcohol and the acid, react on an equivalent basis rather than on a moderate basis.
The term percent of the equivalent amount is for example defined in US Pat. No. 2,889,304 (Sheffer) and US Pat. No. 2,936,296 (Precopio).
When a polyalcohol modifier is employed, it can be ethylene glycol, glycerin, pentaerythritol, 1,1,1-trimethylolethane, 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane, sorbitol, mannitol, di-pentaerythritol, α, w-diols of an aliphatic hydrocarbon containing 4 to 5 carbon atoms, for example 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentane diol,
2-butene 1,4-diol, 2-butyne 1,4-diol and cyclic glycols for example 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl 1,3-cyclobutane diol, di beta-hydroxyethyl ether of hydroquinone and 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol.
As acid reagents, terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid or their acid halides, for example terephtalyl dichloride or one of its lower dialkyl esters of these acids, such as, for example, methyl terephthalates, are used. ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl and octyl and the corresponding isophalates,
as also the semi-esters, for example monomethyl terephthalate, as well as a mixture of such esters and acids or acid halides. However, preferably dimethyl terephthalate is used.
If a modifying polycarboxylic acid is employed, it can be either aliphatic or aromatic. Typical examples of acids or acid reagents which can be used include adipic acid, ortho-phthalic anhydride, hemimellitic acid, trimesic acid, trimellitic acid, succinic acid, anhydride, tetrachlorophthalic hydride, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic acid, maleic acid,
sebacic acid, etc.
In order to improve the abrasion resistance properties of wire enamel, small amounts of metal driers are used.
Although the novel polyesters obtained are preferably used for the preparation of enamels for metallic threads, these can also be used for the preparation of molded products and in solution they can be used to impregnate fabrics, papers, clothing. asbestos and other similar materials. In general, they can be used in all cases where alkyl resins are used.
The total number of hydroxyl groups present on alcohols is normally between 1 and 1.6 times the total number of carboxyl groups on acids.
It has further been found that the properties of the polyester can be improved by adding a polyisocyanate in an amount of 10 to 40%,
preferably 15 to 25% of the total weight of the poly-isocyanate and polyester.
The polyisocyanate preferably comprises at least three available isocyanate groups. Although the polyisocyanates can be used as they are, in particular when the shelf life before use is not an important factor, it is preferred to block the isocyanate groups with the aid of a group which detaches by hand. reaction temperature observed with the terephthalic or isophthalic polymer ester.
As typical examples of such blocked polyisocyanates, there may be mentioned the trade mark product Mondur S in which the isocyanate groups of the reaction product of 3 moles of a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6 tolylene diisocyanates with tri-methylolpropane are blocked by esterification with m-cresol. Under current conditions Monhard SH is the preferred polyisocyanate.
The polyisocyanate is mixed with the preformed polyester beforehand either in the dry state or after dissolution in a solvent before being mixed. The reaction between the polyester and the polyisocyanate is accelerated by the use of an elevated temperature and to prepare enamels for metallic threads these are usually reacted at a temperature of between 3430 and 4270C approximately.
The metal drier is preferably employed in an amount of 0.2 to 1.0% metal based on the total solids in the enamel.
Typical metal driers are zinc, lead, calcium or cadmium linoleates, octanoates and resinates, for example zinc resinate, cadmium resinate, lead linoleate, calcium linoleate, as well as as naphthenates such as zinc naphthenate, lead naphthenate, calcium naphthenate, cadmium naphthenate,
zinc octanoate and cadmium octanoate. Other suitable metal driers, especially polyvalent metal driers such as manganese naphthenate and cobalt naphthenate can be used.
It has further been found that the properties of the polyester based enamel for metallic threads can be improved by incorporating therein a tetraalkyl titanate in place of the metallic drier and the polyisocyanate. Typical tetraalkyl titanates are tetraisopropyl titanate, tetrabutyl titanate, tetrahexyl titanate,
tetramethyl titanate and tetrapropyl titanate. The titanate is used in small amounts, for example 0.001 to 4.0% titanium metal calculated on the total solids of the enamel.
The use of tri (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate makes it possible to obtain enamels for metallic wires which exhibit exceptionally good resistance to heat aging, which has been demonstrated by tests carried out at a temperature. temperature of 240 (l C.
The solvent used to prepare wire enamel is cresylic acid. Cresylic acid has a boiling range of 1850-230 ° C and is a mixture of o-, in- and p-cresols. Individual pure cresols, for example para-cresol, meta-cresol or ortho-cresol can be used, but it is preferable to use the commercial mixture of cresylic acid.
It is frequently desirable to dilute the cresylic acid with an aromatic hydrocarbon, for example a heavy solvent of coal tar, or petroleum or xylene, etc. The solvent can be used in an amount between 0 and 60%, for example 5 to 60% based on the
total weight of solvents. Various conventional aromatic solvents, especially high boiling point solvents can be used such as EW naphtha (a heavy solvent derived from coal tar special for enamel wire - and sold by the Barrett Division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation), Solvesso No. 100 solvent which is an aromatic solvent derived from petroleum.
The reaction temperature is not a particularly critical factor and the temperatures conventionally employed to prepare the known esters of terephthalic acid esters of glycerin or ethylene glycol are employed - for example temperatures between <B> 800 < / B> C and the reflux temperature.
Enamel for wires is applied to metal wires, for example copper wire, either by free immersion or by a die application process. In the following specific examples, the die-coating process was employed to provide an approximately 0.08mm layer on American Wire Gauge No. 18 copper wire.
The tests carried out on the coated wire are for the most part described in US Pat. No. 2,936,296 issued in the name of Precopio, and are standard tests in the art of enamels for metal wires. The test relating to aging under dielectric deformation at high temperature was carried out at 2401) C, and not under the less severe conditions laid down in the Precopio patent cited.
The following examples illustrate the invention. In these examples, if nothing else is mentioned, all the parts and the percentages are by weight.
