Process for preparing cyclododecanecarboxylic acid
The present invention relates to a new process for the preparation of cyolododecanecarboxylic acid.
It has been found that the cyclododecanecarboxylic acid can be obtained in excellent yields by a two-step process according to which cyclododecylmethanol is prepared by oxo synthesis from cyclododecene and then this aldehyde is oxidized, preferably with air, oxygen or ozone, optionally in the presence of catalysts. The cyclododecene used as raw material is easily accessible by dehydration of cyclododecanol, itself obtained by air oxidation of cyclododecane.
We have already described the transformation of. cyclo dodecatrienes to aldehydes by the action of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, then to cycloaliphatic alcohols by subsequent hydrogenation. Only alcohols, such as, for example, monohydroxymethyl- or di (hydroxymethyl) cyclododecane were isolated from the reaction mixture. It has now been found that, when the oxo synthesis is carried out starting from cyclododecene, it is desired to obtain the cyclododecylmethanal directly with an excellent yield.
The reaction is carried out in the presence of an oxo synthesis catalyst such as, for example, des. carbonyl compounds of cobalt, under carbon monoxide and hydrogen pressures (molecular ratio close to 1/1) varying from 100 to 400 atmospheres, preferably close to 230 atmospheres, and at temperatures between 100 and 2000 , preferably close to 1300. The operation is advantageously carried out in the presence of a solvent which is inert towards the reactants, such as, for example, an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon.
In the second step of the process according to the invention, the cyclododecylmethanal is oxidized to cyclododecane-carboxylic acid, preferably by the action of air, oxygen or ozone, as a rule at ordinary temperature (15 to 300 ), optionally in the presence of a solvent which is inert with respect to the aldehyde, such as, for example, petroleum ether.
It is also possible to operate in the presence of known oxidation catalysts such as cobalt and / or manganese halides in solution in acetic acid.
Taking into account the yields specific to each step, the process according to the invention makes it possible to prepare cydododecane-carboxylic acid with yields equal to or greater than 80% relative to the transformed cyclododecene; the unreacted hydrocarbon fraction can be recycled to the oxo reaction, which makes the process industrially advantageous.
According to a variant of the process of the invention, the crude reaction mass obtained after oxo reaction with cyclododecene can be directly oxidized, without first isolating the cyclododecylmethanal.
Cyclododecanecarboxylic acid can be converted into esters. Esters of lower aliphatic alcohols, for example methyl ester, have a pleasant odor which makes them usable in small flavors. Esters of aliphatic alcohols. higher and / or aromatics can further serve as plasticizers for vinyl and cellulosic polymers.
Example
I) 200 g of cyolododecene (1.205 mol), 180 cm3 of cyclohexane and 53 cm3 of a solution of cobalt carbonyl in cyclohexane corresponding to 2 g of metallic cobalt are successively charged into a one liter autoclave with shaking stirring. A pressure of 205 atmospheres is established by introducing into the autoclave an equimolecular mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The autoclave is then heated to 1300 ° C. and the autoclave is stirred for three hours at this temperature, the pressure within the apparatus being maintained at approximately 285 atmospheres.
At the end of this time, it is allowed to cool, the reaction mass is withdrawn from the autoclave and then it is washed with N / 2 nitric acid to remove the cobalt catalyst. By distillation under a vacuum of Q45 ralu of mercury, 159.6 g of a fraction which boils at 92-930 C and which titers 94.5% of aldehyde are obtained. The cyclododecylmethanal thus obtained gives a 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazone melting at 1610 C and a semicarbazone melting at 1660 C.
By assaying the unconverted cyclododecene and the aldehyde in the reaction mass withdrawn from the autoclave, a degree of conversion of 70.4% and a yield of 90% of cyciododecyclméthanal relative to the disappeared hydrocarbon are observed.
II) a - 20 g of cyclododecylmethanal containing 94 oxo in aldehyde then 60 cm3 of glacial acetic acid are charged in a 250 cm3 flask fitted with a stirring device, a thermometer and a gas bubbler, 0.3 g of manganese bromide and 0.16 g of cobalt bromide. Oxygen is then passed through the flask at a flow rate of 10 liters / hour for five hours while maintaining a temperature below 300 ° C. by circulating water.
The reaction mass is then poured into 400 cm3 of water; the precipitate obtained gives after filtration, washing with water and drying under vacuum at 600 ° C., 21 g of crude cyclododecane-carboxylic acid (yield on the charged aldehyde: 90.4 / o) which, recrystallized from ether of petroleum (fraction 50-650) melts at 97.50 C.
b - 17 g of cyclododecylmethanal containing 940% aldehyde and 50 cm3 of petroleum ether are charged into a flask identical to that described under a). Then oxygen is passed at a rate of 10 liters per hour for 7 hours while maintaining the temperature at 300 ° C. The reaction mass precipitates. After filtration and drying under vacuum, 15 g of crude cyclododecane-carboxylic acid are obtained, melting at 95-96 ° C. (yield 79.8%).
Recrystallization from petroleum ether 50-650 makes it possible to recover 12.9 g of pure acid, melting at 980 C.
