Abstract

1,005,040. Spark apparatus. HUBBARD & CO. April 27, 1962 [Dec. 20, 1961], No. 16158/62. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H2] In order to reduce the radio-frequency discharge generated by a surge diverter, sparkgap sections 32, 36 are placed at each end of a non-linear resistance block 34 and the metal mounting bracket 38 is positioned equidistant between the sections 32, 36. A second non- linear resistance block 30 is included to reduce the load on the block 34, and the connection to line is completed by a compression spring and shunt assembly 26 and a protective cap 22, and to earth by a section 20 which is exploded away from the housing 16 if the diverter develops a fault. The section 20 comprises an insulating housing 44 secured to the housing 16 and supporting a non-deflectable metal plate 42, a cupped metal washer 46 and an earth terminal 52 which has projections 53 to prevent it from turning and has a hollow projection 51 containing an explosive cartridge 54. During normal diverter operation current flows to earth through members 42, 46 and an arc between members 46, 51, the rate of heat dissipation over member 51 being sufficient to prevent explosion of the cartridge 54. Should damage occur to the diverter resistance blocks or spark gaps, however, the arc between members 46, 51 caused by the line power current will explode cartridge 54 and the housing 44 will fracture at the section 45, the earth lead restricting movement of the severed portion, Fig. 4 (not shown). Arcing may continue between members 46, 52 until the line protection operates, after which the diverter is permanently inoperative. Specification 1,005,039 is referred to.
