Description
Plastic measuring tape
The invention relates to a measuring tape made of plastic with a layer of essentially inextensible threads running alongside one another in the longitudinal direction of the tape. Such a measuring tape is already known.
Compared to those tapes that have an insert made of a glass fiber fabric, it has the advantage of extremely low extensibility, since the threads extending in the longitudinal direction of the tape are not corrugated by weft threads, as is the case with fabric, but extend completely straight in the tape. When the tape is stretched, the threads can no longer be straightened, as is the case with the warp threads of the glass fiber fabric. For these reasons, tapes with an inlay of non-woven threads lying next to one another are particularly suitable for measuring tapes.
In the case of the known measuring tapes with non-woven threads lying next to one another, these are covered on all sides by a plastic jacket which can be produced by spraying or dipping.
However, these measuring tapes are complicated to manufacture, since it is difficult to encase the threads passing through with plastic in a satisfactory manner by spraying or immersion.
The object on which the invention is based was therefore to design the known measuring tapes made of plastic with a layer of threads running next to one another in the longitudinal direction of the tape so that they have the greatest possible strength with the smallest possible thickness, that they are produced in a relatively simple and inexpensive manner and at the same time their two sides of the tape can have smooth or almost smooth surfaces, depending on your choice, without additional processing and that it is also possible, if necessary, to give the two sides of the tape different colors and thus avoid mix-ups.
This is achieved according to the invention in that the position of these threads is covered on both sides by a strip-shaped film made of thermoplastic material and the two film strips are welded to one another with the threads embedded.
When the plastic foils are welded together while the foils are simultaneously pressed onto one another, the threads form a firm bond with these foils, so that the tensile and tear strength of the band obtained is extremely high, at least greater than when the plastic is coated with plastic by spraying or dipping Fiberglass tapes are where there is a risk that their embedded threads do not form a sufficiently non-slip connection with the plastic cover.
A particular advantage of the tape according to the invention is that it is much easier and cheaper to manufacture than those whose insert is coated by spraying or immersion and that all that is necessary to achieve differently colored tape sides is to add differently colored tape-shaped foils when adjusting the tape use.
The threads embedded in plastic can be made of glass fibers, but also metal, e.g. B. bronze or textile material such as linen, cotton or rayon exist. The plastic foils covering the thread insert can also be formed by a single strip of corresponding width, which is bent in its center line and whose longitudinal halves located on both sides of this bending line are welded to one another.
Further advantages of the tape according to the invention emerge from the following description of an exemplary embodiment which is shown in the drawing in the form of a section partially torn away in an oblique view.
This exemplary embodiment of the measuring tape according to the invention consists of two tape-like foils 1 and 2 made of thermoplastic material lying on top of one another, between which a layer of six essentially inextensible threads 3 lying close to one another or at a slight mutual spacing is arranged. The width of the foil strips exceeds the width of the position of the threads. By mutually welding the two film strips 1 and 2, they are firmly connected to one another and to the threads 3.
