<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Shell fuze The present patent relates to a shell fuze, in particular for mortar shells, comprising a device for controlling the bursting of a detonator, capable of being adjusted so as to act either at the time of the encounter. of this shell with an obstacle offering a minimum resistance determines, either after a determined time following this encounter.
The shell fuze according to the invention is characterized in that said control device comprises at least a first striker having a head projecting from the body of the fuse and capable of being driven into this body when it meets said body. obstacle to produce the ignition of at least one primer controlling the explosion of the detonator, at least a second fixed firing pin and at least one slow combustion primer arranged so as to be projected against this fixed firing pin when the bus undergoes a deceleration of a determined value and igniting the detonator with a delay corresponding to said time, and finally adjustable means making it possible to prevent the movement of the first striker towards its primer so as to explode the detonator after the shell has encountered the shell. obstacle.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, an embodiment of the rocket, object of the present invention. FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section in the secured position.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken through line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section similar to that of FIG. 1 representing the parts of the rocket in the position they occupy after the departure of the shell and which are adjusted to produce the bursting of this shell on its arrival on the goal. Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the line IV-IV of FIG. 1.
The fuze shown has a body in two parts 1a and 1b, capable of being fixed to a shell not shown, in particular a mine-launcher shell, by screwing its threaded portion 1c into a corresponding opening of the shell.
The part la of the body is surmounted by a percussive head 2 constituted by a piston capable of sliding and of being displaced angularly in a sealed manner in a socket 3 screwed onto the part la. The lower face of the piston, on which protrudes a percussion rod 4, has a cylindrical housing 2a for a spring 5, the walls of which surround it are partially cut by two longitudinal slots 2b. On this lower face also protrude two stops 2c and 2d, intended to limit the angular travel of the head 2. The spring 5 rests by its lower end on a ring 6 having two vertical tabs 6a and 6b of -width corresponding to that slots 2b.
These tabs are intended to axially block the head 2, in particular when this head is positioned angularly as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, so as to prevent it from sinking into the rocket under the action of any axial shock. When the head 2 is placed in the position shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, offset from the first by approximately 90, these tabs, which are of a depth corresponding to that of the slots 2b, are placed in front of these slots and no longer oppose the axial movement of the head so that the rocket can operate on impact.
These two angular positions of the head 2 are indicated on the sleeve 3 by the marks VZ (piston in locked position) and MZ (piston in unlocked position): a mark 3a enables the head 2 to be positioned correctly in correspondence.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In a variant not shown, one could of course provide the head 2 with tabs such as 6a and 6b and the part 6 with slots 2b.
Below the ring 6 is disposed a sleeve 7 having elastic hooks 7a cut out in the sleeve and held against this ring by a support sleeve 8 subjected to the axial action of a spring 9 arranged between this sleeve and a bearing 10a of a primer holder 10. The latter consists of a tubular sleeve surrounding the striker over part of its length and the outer face of which has two annular grooves 10b and 10c forming notches for the hooks 7a. These are engaged with the groove 10b when the shell has not yet been fired so that the primer 10d with which the primer holder is fitted is sufficiently distant from the field of action of the firing pin 4 so that, if the latter had to accidentally sink into the body of the rocket, it could not reach the primer.
When the shell is subjected to an acceleration of determined magnitude; especially while this shell moves in the barrel under the action of the gases, the sleeve 8 moves axially against the spring 9 in the direction of a sleeve 12 arranged between the bearing surface 10a of the primer holder 10 and the bottom a sleeve 13 housed in the upper part of the body lb.
At the start of this axial movement of the sleeve 8, the sleeve 7 remains stationary, being engaged by its hooks 7a with the groove 10b of the primer holder and these hooks cannot open as long as the tightened part 8a of the sleeve is at their height.
Once the hooks 7a have been released, they open by reciprocal action of their end on the inclined face of the groove 10b and the sleeve 7 moves axially like the sleeve 8. The axial movement of the sleeves 7 and 8 takes place. ends by engaging the hooks 7a in the groove 10c, for the first, and by meeting with the sleeve 12, for the second. These two cases remain in this position until the moment when the acceleration is complete, that is to say until the shell leaves the gun.
From this moment, the acceleration of the shell becomes negative: the cases 7 and 8 and the primer holder 10 then move in the direction of the head of the rocket, aided in this movement by a spring 11 acting on the bush 12, and take the position shown in FIG. 3.
The lower part of the primer 10d extends into a housing 14 formed in the primer holder and closed by a perforated screw allowing the passage, towards the lower part of the body 1, of the flame produced during the ignition of the primer.
The sleeve 12 has at its lower part two tongues 12a and 12b engaged in the sleeve 13 through openings 13a and 13b.
The first of these tongues 12a is intended for the axial locking of a leader support 16 in the position shown in FIG. 1 in which this support is distant from a fixed firing pin 17 projecting on the underside of the bottom of the socket 13. This support is also blocked in this position, while the shell performs the prescribed trajectory, by a pin 16a the head of which is engaged in a groove 13c of the sleeve 13, in which this support is capable of sliding, provided of course that it is not blocked by this pin.
In the central housing of this support 16 is arranged a delayed primer 19 operating with a delay of about 0.05 s. in relation to the time of ignition. In a variant, this delay could of course be made smaller or, on the contrary, much greater by correspondingly modifying the composition of the pyrotechnic delay charge.
The ignition of the primer 19 takes place practically at the moment when the shell strikes an obstacle of a certain consistency: the deceleration to which this shell is subjected in fact produces the shearing of the pin 16a so that the primer holder 16 can move by inertia in the direction of the striker 17. This primer holder is guided in its course by a rod 20a integral with a casing 20 and engaged in an opening 16c.
The casing 20 contains a timepiece movement, outlined in a phantom line drawing by a rectangle, capable of angularly driving a detonating primer holder 21 from a rest position (FIG. 1) into an active position (FIG. 2) in which this detonating primer is placed above a pellet 22: this pellet is intended to transmit the detonation to the detonator 15.
When the rocket is intended to control the explosion of the shell when the target is struck, the piston 2 is first positioned angularly by placing the mark 3a opposite the inscription N # on the ring 3 of the rocket body. This piston is then unlocked axially so that it sinks into the body 1 by meeting its head with the goal.
At the start of the stroke, the primer holder 10 and the socket 12 leave their position of FIG. 1 to move in the position shown in fig. 3 as described: the primer 10d is placed in the field of action of the striker 4 while the clockwork movement brings the detonating primer holder 21 into the position of FIG. 3. The rocket is then fully armed.
When this rocket encounters an obstacle, the piston 2 sinks into the body 1 and the striker 4 causes the ignition of the primer 10d: simultaneously the support 16 moves towards the striker 17 which determines the ignition of the charge 19 .
The flame produced by the primer 10d descends through the openings 14a, 13a and 13b through the groove 16b of the support 16 and openings 20b and 20e of the casing 20 to reach the detonating primer 21. The latter s 'ignites in turn, breaks a protective screen 22a covering the pellet 22 and finally detonates the latter which acts directly on the detonator 15.
Of course the composition of the primers 10d, 21 and 22 is such that this ignition process takes place
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
almost instantaneously so that the shell explodes the instant it hits the target.
When the percussion system comprising the piston 2 and the firing pin 4 remains blocked, for example following a damage, or when the system cannot operate, in particular because the shell does not hit the target directly with the percussion head 2 of the rocket, the rocket shown and described also controls the explosion of this shell since the ignition of the charge 19 is independent of the operation of the percussion head 2. Of course this explosion will take place with a certain delay, variable according to the constitution load 19, as described above.
When the rocket is on the contrary intended to command the explosion of the shell after it has reached its goal, with a determined delay, the piston 2 is placed on the VZ position of the ring 3, position offset by approximately 90 relative to the MZ position. This piston is then locked axially by the tabs 6ci and 6b of the ring 6 and cannot sink into the body 1 when it meets the goal.
At the start of the stroke, the primer holder 10 and the sleeve 12 move axially in the same way as when the piston is unlocked and are placed as shown in FIG. 3. The clockwork movement controls the angular displacement of the detonating primer holder 20 in its active position of FIG. 3.
When the shell reaches its goal, the pin 16a of the support 16 is sheared as described and this support throws itself by inertia against the striker 17. It is then the primer 19 which causes the explosion of the detonator 15.
