Process for the production of a hydrogen-rich gas from hydrocarbons The present invention relates to a process for the conversion of hydrocarbons. Under transformation is understood the reaction of hydrocarbons with water vapor to carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
It is known that hydrocarbons can be converted, e.g. B. can convert into those with double or triple carbon bonds that these hydrocarbons are preheated to a comparatively high temperature and then passed through an electric arc in which the intended conversion takes place. Because of the very high current density, the arc has a temperature that is in itself over 3000.
If the hydrocarbon gas to be converted is passed through the electric arc, the temperature of the arc drops depending on the throughput rate, although the temperature still remains considerably above 1000, in most cases even above 1500. The transformation of the hydrocarbon carried by this light arc takes place on the basis of the action of the arc temperature, so that the transformation mechanism essentially runs according to the known laws of thermodynamics.
Forming or cleavage processes using an electric arc are known, for example, for the production of acetylene from methane (natural gas) or from mixtures of methane and ethane and are used on a large scale.
However, this method shows a certain soot deposition. When processing methane or methane-ethane mixtures, bus formation must still be kept within technically and economically tolerable limits, but soot deposition becomes a very serious problem when splitting higher-boiling hydrocarbons.
so that the electric arc process has remained limited to relatively low-boiling starting hydrocarbons. The high temperature of the arc not only favors the build-up of soot, but also increases the reaction energy considerably, so that economic efficiency is also impaired.
It has also been proposed to maintain an electric glow arc or glow discharge at greatly reduced pressure and to pass a hydrocarbon gas or a mixture of hydrocarbon vapors and water vapor through the discharge path. The pressure is lowered to 80 mm of mercury and even further. As a result, the disadvantages which are due to the high working temperature of the arc process are essentially eliminated.
The yield of unsaturated hydrocarbons, in particular acetylene, is unsatisfactory and, in addition, because of the greatly reduced pressure, considerable dimensions of the device must be accepted in order to achieve the throughputs required for the economy of the process. The facilities for generating or maintaining the required vacuum are also very expensive with large throughputs.
It has now been found that the reshaping of hydrocarbons in an electrical discharge field, avoiding the disadvantages of both the arc discharge and the vacuum glow arc discharge, can be achieved with a high yield of reshaping products and higher throughput if the starting material is also used guides the water vapor through a zone at a temperature only slightly above the boiling temperature of the hydrocarbons,
in which an electrical glow discharge with a field strength of at least 500 volts / cm is maintained at essentially atmospheric or moderately above atmospheric pressure, the flow rate being selected so that the dwell time of the starting material or the reaction products in the area of the discharge is between 0, 5 and 2 milliseconds.
Surprisingly, it has been shown that, in the case of glow discharges with a field strength of more than 500 volts cm, the reshaping can be carried out without significant soot formation, even with comparatively high molecular weight hydrocarbons, if, on the one hand, a comparatively short dwell time the starting materials or
Reaction products ensures that the influence of the electric field is tightly limited in terms of time, and if, on the other hand, by choosing an atmospheric or moderately superatmospheric spherical pressure, sufficient electrical energy conversion in the discharge field without the generation of spatially extended high-temperature areas, as can be found in an arc it is made possible.
The damping of temperature peaks in the discharge field also contributes to the fact that when hydrocarbon eggs are reformed with water vapor in the context of the process according to the invention, a strong excess of water vapor can be used, preferably with an excess of 25-7511 / o over the theoretical value for the be intentional conversion required amount of water vapor. When converting hydrocarbons, the process according to the invention is used in the (weakly) exothermic range,
so that one is economically more favorable than with all forming processes taking place in the high temperature range, which are known to be endothermic.
The lower limit of 500 volts, cm for the field strength is due to the fact that, as the investigations have shown, at lower field strengths no sufficient amount of electrical energy for the intended reactions can be converted within the glow discharge. The upper limit of the field strength is only limited by the breakdown field strength leading to the arc; However, it has been shown that field strengths of 3000 to 5000 volts \ cm are practically always sufficient to achieve sufficient conversions even with higher molecular hydrocarbons.
The invention works with atmospheric pressure in the discharge range of the glow discharge. A slight undercut of the atmospheric pressure, for example up to an absolute pressure of 500 mm Hg, practically does not limit the possibility of using the method according to the invention. The upper pressure is primarily limited by the influence of the gas pressure of a glow discharge path on the absolute voltage and the shape of the discharge path.
It was found that pressures higher than about 2 atm no longer bring any technical or economic advantages.
Numerical examples of deformations according to the method according to the invention are given below.
Hydrocarbons with water vapor were passed through the glow discharge in order to form a fuel gas, which essentially, that is to say at least 851 / o-, consists of carbon oxide + hydrogen.
<I> Example 1 </I> A mixture of propane and butane (liquid gas) was used as the starting product. The steam requirement during the reaction was about 5 mol of starting material and was thus about 40% greater than the theoretical steam requirement. The dwell time of the vapor mixture within the glow discharge, which was operated with a field strength of 4000 volts per cm and a current strength of about 170 mA,
was about 1 millisecond. The conversion was 62%. The result was an end gas with the following composition:

The octane vapor was mixed with 10.1 mol of water vapor per mole of octane at a temperature of 160 and then passed through the glow discharge operated under the same conditions as in Example 1. The dwell time within the glow path was around 1.5 milliseconds, with 78.6% being implemented.
The cracking gas had the following composition:

The useful gas had the following composition:

<tb> CH4 <SEP> 1.3 <SEP> vol. <SEP>% <I> Example 4 </I> A vapor of technical grade benzene at a temperature of 120 with water vapor in an amount of 10.0 mol Water vapor mixed per mole of benzene.
The proportion of water vapor in the mixture was 66% greater than the theoretically required amount of water vapor. After the mixture had passed through the glow discharge, a conversion of 94.8% was found.
No soot formation was observed in any of the cases. High-boiling tars or oils were also not used in the implementation. Much more exclusively permanent gases or low-boiling hydrocarbons were formed as reaction products.
The implementation of the method according to the invention is not tied to a device formed in a certain way. You can use cooled tubular, but also flat or plate-shaped electrodes. The glow discharge can be operated with technical alternating current or with smoothed or unsmoothed direct current. Even multi-phase currents, e.g. B. three-phase current, can stretch to build a spatially extensive discharge (when using several electrodes) attract her. Finally, it is also possible, instead of the usual AC frequency of 50 Hz, to use a higher frequency, e.g. B. to use one of 300 Hz or 500 Hz or an even higher.
