Alloy and use of said alloy for brazing metal parts The present invention relates to an alloy and to the use of said alloy for brazing metal parts.
For the brazing of metal parts with a view to obtaining articles subjected in service to temperatures of 5501 ° C. and above, it is necessary to use a brazing alloy giving a joint resistant to these temperatures. The alloys used, commonly heretofore for this purpose, were compositions of non-noble metals. Because these compositions tend to react easily with alloys. when joined, they flow poorly and hardly form well-filled joints.
Nickel-palladium-manganese alloys provide a notable improvement. These alloys melt easily and form joints that withstand the temperatures mentioned. However, it is often necessary to have a brazing alloy in the form of wire or sheet, in order to be able to apply it easily in the desired quantity and in the desired location. Now, precisely because of their resistance to high temperatures, nickel-palladium-manganese alloys are difficult to form into wire or sheet form, at least without resulting in rapid wear of the shaping tool. .
Silver-palladium-manganese alloys are also superior to non-noble alloys for brazing, but are affected by a tendency to release palladium and manganese by diffusion into the alloys of the parts to be brazed, leaving in Seal it with a relatively weak silver-rich coating.
The present invention is based on the surprising discovery that certain quaternary alloys are superior for the purpose to all existing alloys. It relates to an alloy consisting practically of 10 to 60% copper, 10 to 50% nickel, 1 to 30% manganese and at least 10% palladium.
Examples of the alloy of the invention with their liquidus and solidus temperatures are given below.

These parts are usually formed from alloys which (due to the presence of chromium, aluminum, titanium or other elements) tend to form cohesive, tough and refractory films on their surfaces, and therefore resist corrosion. oxidation at high temperatures. Among these alloys, there may be mentioned those consisting mainly of nickel and cobalt, with at least 5% of chromium, with or without other elements such as in particular iron, titanium, aluminum and molybdenum; and austenitic chromium steels such as those of the 18% chromium - 8% nickel type. The alloy of the invention can also be used with advantage to join: nickel-molybdenum alloys resistant to creep; tungsten; and molybdenum. The parts to be joined can be made of identical or different alloys or metals.
Most of these alloys are covered with a refractory oxide film which interferes with the formation of a good seal. This film can be removed by brazing with a flux composed of borax, boric acid or a mixture of borax and boric acid, in a hydrogen atmosphere. The alloy of the invention has the advantage that the distance between the parts to be joined is not critical. The alloy not only flows well in the capillary openings, but also fills large openings, so that it is not necessary in the preparation of the surfaces to be joined to make them conform to each other. one another exactly.
The alloy of the invention has the further advantage that it lends itself better to vacuum brazing than the known alloys because of its lower tendency to volatilize under vacuum at the flow temperature.
