Process for the preparation of isobutenylamines
The present invention relates to a simple and efficient process for the preparation of N-isobutenylamines and N, N'-bis (isobutenyl) amines.
The previous methods for the preparation of enamines from aldehydes and secondary amines are based on the removal of the water formed during the reaction with desiccants such as anhydrous sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, calcium oxide, calcium sulfate or borax (C. Mannich and H. Davidsen, Ber. 69, 2106 [1936]). 2 moles of amine per mole of aldehyde must be used to form alkylidenebisamines, from which enamines are formed by splitting off amine during distillation. The yields in this process are generally poor, especially with aromatic amines, and the removal of the excess amine often causes difficulties.
Another known process gives enamines derived from ketones by removing the water of reaction as an azeotrope with added benzene (FW Heyl and ME Herr, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 74, 3627 [1952]; G. Stork and coworkers, J. Am. Chem.
Soc., 76, 2029 [1954]; E. P. Benzing and coworkers, Ber. 90, 2833 [1957]). This process cannot be used for the condensation of aromatic amines with aldehydes which have a lower boiling point than benzene (boiling point 80.1).
It has now been found that isobutenylamines can be prepared in a simple manner if use is made of the ability of isobutyraldehyde to form an azeotrope with water. He inventive method for the preparation of N-isobutenylamines and N, N'-bis (isobutenyl) amines of the general formulas
EMI1.1
in which RI and R2 are identical or different organic radicals or together with the nitrogen atom or the nitrogen atoms are a heterocyclic ring, is characterized in that one mole of a secondary amine or diamine of the formulas R1-NH-R2 or R1-NH-R2- NH-Ri reacts with one mole of isobutyraldehyde,
the water formed is continuously removed in an azeotrope with refluxing isobutyraldehyde as entrainer, the excess isobutyraldehyde is distilled off from the mixture and the N-isobutenylamine or N, N'-bis (isobutenyl) amine formed is separated off from the remaining reaction mixture. For purification, the enamine is expediently fractionally distilled under reduced pressure. The implementation takes place in principle according to the equation
EMI1.2
This reaction can take place with all secondary amines which contain no more than one ring system with five or more members bonded directly to the nitrogen atom and which have a boiling point at least as high as the azeotropic mixture.
Because the boiling point of the binary azeotrope of isobutyraldehyde and water (boiling point 61) is higher than, for example, the boiling point of dimethylamine (boiling point 7.4) or ethylamine (boiling point 55.5o), these amines are not suitable for the new process , while for example morpholine (bp 126-130) is well suited. Dicyclohexylamine, for example, cannot be reacted with isobutyraldehyde by the method described here because steric hindrance occurs. This behavior is to be expected with all secondary amines which contain two 5-membered or higher-membered ring systems directly on the nitrogen atom.
Taking into account the exceptions just mentioned, all aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic secondary amines and diamines can be used. It is particularly valuable that aromatic enamines are also easily obtained by the present process, as the example of N-isobutenyl-N-methylaniline shows. So far, aromatic enamines could not be produced at all or only in an unsatisfactory manner. The yields achieved with the process according to the invention are very good. The yield of N-isobutenylmorpholine is, for example, 94 / o, while according to the Mannich method only 29e! o (P. L. De Benneville and J. H. McCartney, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 72, 3037 [1950]).
The N-isobutenylamines and N, N'-bis (butenyl) amines are stabilizers and acid-binding agents.
They can be reduced in a known manner to the corresponding saturated amines.
Example 1
N-isobutenylmorpholine
46 cm3 (1/2 mol) of isobutyraldehyde are allowed to flow in, possibly with cooling, to 43.6 cm3 (t / 2 mol) of morpholine and an additional 35 cm3 of isobutyraldehyde is added, which corresponds to the dead volume of the Dean Stark water separator used. The water separator is then put on and 9 cm3 of water of reaction are distilled off under reflux in 3 hours.
After the water has been separated off, the excess aldehyde is distilled off and the residue is fractionated in vacuo over a 30 cm long Vigreux column with a mirrored vacuum jacket. You get
66 g = 94 / d. Th. Of N-isobutenylmorpholine of bp 11 = 70-72 C; nid = 1.4670.
