Method for supplying the electric current to an anode of an aluminum electrolysis furnace In the Swiss patent No. 344219 a method for the production of a self-baking, continuous anode for aluminum electrolysis furnaces is described, according to which the continuous anode is mechanically solidified (i.e. block - or extruded or also stamped) blocks of synthetic carbon mixture is produced, with a binding agent being arranged between the surfaces to be connected.
The charcoal mass is composed in such a way that the charcoal blocks do not run through the furnace heat during coking, as does the charcoal mass added in lump form in the known aluminum electrolysis furnaces with self-baking anode (the so-called Söderberg furnaces). The blocks he give way without losing their shape substantially.
The person skilled in the art knows how he can increase the temperature point at which a z. B. from crushed coke and coal tar pitch composite charcoal mass begins to flow. This goal is achieved primarily by reducing the pitch content.
The grain size of the coke also has an influence; the coarser the grain, the lower the softening point. As a binding agent for gluing the blocks, masses of carbonaceous material can be used, the pitch of which is 25 to 100%. You can use the usual Söderberg mass, i.e. a mass
which contains a higher pitch content than the bulk of the unbaked blocks used here. The binder is a carbonaceous material that has a lower viscosity than the carbon mixture of the blocks, which means that it begins to flow at relatively lower temperatures. Such a material can be poured into the joints between the blocks in a pulpy or liquid state or spread on the upper side of the blocks. It also easily fills any voids on the surface of the unbaked blocks. You can also use it in a solid state, e.g. B. as a powder.
It can then be sprinkled as such onto the horizontal connecting surfaces in a layer thickness of, for example, 5 to 30 mm, before a new block layer is placed while the vertical joints between the blocks are stamped out with this powder. When the blocks are heated in the aluminum electrolysis furnace, this powder also heats up, melts and then fills all the cavities.
Such a powder for the horizontal connecting surfaces consists, for example, of 38% pitch coke, 10% pure coke and 52.1 / o medium hard pitch (softening point about 80 C) and has the following grain composition:
1.68 to 3.36 mm 101 / o 0.84 1.68 mm 161 / o 0.42 0.84 mm 16% 0.21 0.42 mm 1611 / o 0.105 0.21 mm 140/9 0 0.105 mm 281 / o The dry adhesive for the vertical joints should preferably have a coarser grain size. It comes z.
B. the following composition in question: 57.6 0/0 pitch coke, 14.4% pure coke and 28.0% medium hard pitch (softening point about 80 C), and the following grain size:
1.68 to 3.36 mm 16% 0.84 1.68 mm 281 / o 0.42 0.84 mm 28% 0.21 0.42 mm 2811 / o The blocks may stick to one another without an intermediate layer of adhesive.
The composition of the charcoal mixture of the blocks, e.g. B. from crushed coke and coal tar pitch, which are to be used for the construction of anodes, corresponds to that of the normal anodes used for aluminum furnace operation before burning (baking), i.e. the content of the coal mass of pitch as a binding agent should be around 16 to 20 0/0.
Examples of block anode masses 1. Block anode mass consisting of around 70% pitch coke and 30% pure hard coal coke with hard pitch as a binding agent.

as with block anode mass 1.
Anodes are preferably composed of at least two blocks of carbon mass which are arranged side by side. The entire coal package is conveniently surrounded by an iron frame in which it can slide up or down as a whole. The anode can also be formed without a frame.
The horizontal distance with which the coal blocks are placed next to one another can be 5 to 50 mm and should advantageously be 10 to 40 mm.
The power supply to the anode can be made by perpendicularly arranged, round steel bolts, with semi-cylindrical recesses which are cut out on the respective opposite vertical bolts of two adjacent carbon blocks as holes for the bolts. In operation, however, difficulties have arisen, so that it has subsequently been found more advantageous to supply the current to the anode laterally through metal bolts that are horizontal or inclined with respect to the horizontal.
The supply of current through lateral bolts in self-baking anodes for the aluminum electrolysis is known per se. In these anodes, the electrode mass is z. B. contained in an aluminum jacket, which is enclosed within a certain height by an iron frame. Openings are provided in the frame and in the aluminum jacket, through which the lateral power supply bolts are pushed diagonally downwards into the still soft, unbaked electrode mass.
These power supply bolts are usually made of steel, are for example 65 cm long and tapered from 70 to 50 mm in diameter, pointed at the front end and designed flat and copper-plated at the rear end. The flat part is connected to the busbar with the help of flexible aluminum strips via a power supply rod (anode rod).
Only the two lowest rows of these replaceable bolts extend into the baked part of the anode and are connected to the busbar, the rows above not. After the electrode has been burned off in the weld pool and lowered, the connection between the lowermost bolts and the power supply rod is released; the bolts are then pulled out of the anode and reinserted further up. The next row of bolts that has not yet been connected is connected to the power supply rod.
In this version, the anode is suspended from the iron frame; the lateral contact pins are only used for power supply.
There are various other embodiments of continuous self-baking anodes with side power supply for aluminum electrolysis in the fluoride bath, as is now common practice. It is also known to hang the electrode on the lateral contact pins so that they bear the weight of the electrode.
The inventive method for supplying the electrical current to a continuous, self-baking, composed of unbaked and mechanically solidified carbon blocks anode for aluminum electrolysis ovens by lateral, expediently horizontal, or slightly inclined to the horizontal contact bolts is characterized in that the contact bolts at least in the bottom row are electrically conductive and at the same time mechanically load-bearing connected to the power supply rods, while those of the rows above, z.
B. 10 to 40 cm, preferably 15 to 25 cm higher lying rows, or row can only be connected electrically conductive with the help of flexible conductors to the power supply rods.
This method takes into account the fact that at a certain height of the anode the coking of the charcoal mass has not yet completely ended. If the contact bolts are rigidly connected to the power supply rods at this height and therefore load-bearing, it can happen that the bolt holes are widened and the electrical contact between the carbon block and the contact bolt is impaired.
With the arrangement according to the invention, this danger does not exist, since the electrical connection of the contact bolts to the power supply rods is ensured by flexible conductors, so that these contact bolts do not participate in the carrying of the anode. Bundles of aluminum or copper strips serve as flexible conductors, for example.
The electrically conductive and mechanically load-bearing connection of the contact bolts of the lower rows or rows can be achieved by screwing the anode rods to the usually copper-plated bolt heads.
The holes for receiving the contact pins are preferably produced when the blocks are made from unbaked synthetic carbon. Appropriately, two bolt holes are arranged one above the other in each carbon block; But there can also be more than two bolt holes one above the other in the carbon block or only one bolt hole per carbon block. Particularly large coal blocks can, for.
B. be provided with four bolt holes, two of which are arranged in the lower half and two in the upper half.
In the course of the lowering of the anode according to its consumption, the upper, freshly placed blocks are slowly heated under the influence of the high temperature in the aluminum electrolysis furnace. During this heating, the softening point of the mass is passed. The block does not melt when passing through the softening point and essentially retains its shape.
The dimensions of the bolt holes can, however, change slightly under certain circumstances, so that the contact bolts introduced later can even be painted with the aid of painting the bolts, e.g. B. from a mixture of graphite and pitch, no longer on the Wandun gene of the bolt holes close enough and the current transfer is poor.
For this reason, according to a further embodiment of the invention in the bolt holes of the unbaked blocks filler from ge suitable material is used. For this purpose, aluminum packings have proven to be very effective. These fillers are used to maintain the shape of the bolt hole until the coking has progressed sufficiently.
Once this state is reached, in which neither the shape of the block nor that of the bolt hole can change, the filler bodies are removed and the contact bolts are inserted in their place. These are mostly made of steel and have a flattened, copper-plated connection head, which according to the invention is initially connected to the power supply with the help of flexible conductors and later, when the row of bolts has reached the lowest position, connected to the power supply rods in an electrically conductive and mechanical manner becomes.
1 to 4 illustrate two embodiments of the method according to the invention, the connecting parts being shown in two views perpendicular to one another, in FIGS. 2 and 4 partially in section. The anode is only partially shown. The anode blocks 1, 2 and 3 can be seen, as well as the adhesive points 4.
In the upper bolt holes filler 5 made of aluminum, which are flush with the side surface of the blocks and have webs 6 at their head end, which bil the starting point for a tool, with the help of which the filler will later be rotated out. In Fig. 2, the filler 5 as well as the steel bolts 7, 8 and 9 are not in their entire length of z. B. 65 cm drawn. You penetrate z. B. 40 cm deep into the anode blocks. In the lower bolt hole of the block 2, contact bolts 7 are already inserted in place of the aluminum filler body.
However, these contact pins 7 are not yet electrically connected, as can be seen from FIG. 1. The contact pins 8 form the second lowest row and are electrically connected to the power supply and suspension rods with the help of aluminum strips, but not connected to them in a load-bearing manner. In contrast, the contact pins 9 of the bottom row are rigid and therefore screwed ver both electrically conductive and mechanically load-bearing with the power supply rods 12.
The latter are connected to the busbars at the top. The anode is therefore carried with the aid of the contact bolts 9 and the power supply rods 12.
Only when the anode has been used up to such an extent that the contact bolts 9 have to be pulled out and inserted further up in place of aluminum filling bodies are the contact bolts 8, the row of which has now reached the lowest position, with the lowest end of the power supply rods 12 mechanically connected while the contact pins 7 are connected to the flexible conductor 11.
Fig. 3 and 4 show another embodiment form of the connection of the contact pins. The con tact bolts 8 are electrically conductively connected with the help of flexible current conductors 13 to the power supply rod 14, but not connected to it in a load-bearing manner, while the contact bolts 9 carry the weight of the anode.
The lower contact pins are usually pulled out of the anode when their stand from the weld pool is only a few centimeters.
There are always several superimposed contact bolt layers connected to the power supply rods (anode rods) with good electrical conductivity, with at least one layer only being connected electrically lei tend and one or more layers below it carry the anode.
It has been found to be advantageous to arrange the blocks offset from one another in height so that one block is arranged higher or lower by half a block height than the neighboring one. This crenellated arrangement of the anode surface is retained when each new block layer is topped up.
It is z. B. increased at the moment when the anode has burned down so far that only 4 to 5 block layers are left.
When pressing the blocks from unbaked mass, two, four or even more bolt holes in the intended arrangement are advantageously also pressed into each block, e.g. B. exactly in the middle of the lower half and in the middle of the upper half. As a result, the contact bolts of each row will come to lie at the same height, since the contact bolt of the lower hole of a block to the con tact bolt of the upper hole of the adjacent block belongs to a current bolt row and vice versa.
In this way it is achieved that only the horizontal joint is exposed to the melt flow for every second block when the lower surface of the anode has burned down to the joint. FIGS. 5 and 6 illustrate these relationships. From Fig. 6 shows how far the bolts in the coal blocks, for example, intorei. You can also see that in this example the coal blocks are also horizontally offset from one another.
Of course, blocks that take up the entire width or the entire length of the anode are also possible. In the case of rectangular anodes with an elongated cross-section, as is customary, the power supply bolts can either only be arranged on the longitudinal sides or also on the front sides.
