<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
(fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Device for fixing two elements inside one another and method of manufacturing this device The device defined by claim I relates to fixing two elements inside one another, of which one forms a support for the other. It can be used to easily and removably attach a bearing pad, such as a drilled member, an axial stop member or a kitten, a ring or a body carrying such pads to a support; which may be, depending on the case, a kitten, a ring, a bearing body or even a frame element of the part equipped with said bearing.
The possibilities of employing said device in the construction of bearings are numerous. This device even applies to elements other than bearing elements. Wherever it is a question of fixing an element of small dimensions to a support, the device defined by claim I advantageously replaces driving in.
One of the elements of this device has side faces which are distributed around an axis and each form a portion of a surface of revolution generated from said axis. On the other hand, the other element has side surface portions which correspond to said side faces.
These elements can be engaged freely, at least in part, one in the other. Said side faces can be brought simultaneously into coincidence with said side surface portions, said faces and said corresponding surface portions being one inner and the other outer and being fitted to each other to secure the two elements to each other. another by tight clamping, when said side faces are brought into coincidence with said surface portions.
As to claim II, it defines a method of manufacturing this device, more particularly an element of a special embodiment of said device.

Figs. 1 and 2 show a bearing body 1, having the general shape of a body of revolution, in which are mounted a guide element 2 and an axial stop element 3. The latter is removably mounted in the bearing body , which has for this purpose a housing 5 of cylindrical shape,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
limited by a thin circular wall 6 and by a thick bottom 7. In this thick bottom is formed an opening 4, coaxial with the bearing body, in which the element 2 is driven.
This could be for example, a pierced stone. It has, in its central part, an opening 2a intended to axially guide one of the pivots of the shaft of a mobile (not shown).
The bearing body 1 is metallic, like the usual bearing housings. In a variant, it could also be made of synthetic material or formed of a metal part covered internally with a layer of synthetic material.
In order to allow the fixing of the axial stop element 3, which could be, for example, a counter-pivot stone, the wall 6 has three projections 8 distributed at equal distances from each other on the inner face 9 of the wall 6. Each of these projections occupies the entire height of said wall. These projections have on the other hand three vertical faces, that is to say an inner face 10 and two lateral faces 11.
The three inner faces 10 of the three projections 8 are portions of the same cylindrical surface coaxial with the bearing body. The side faces 11 are approximately radial.
The protrusions 8 are located at an equal distance from each other, and each covers such a part of the cylindrical wall 6 that the parts of this wall included between the protrusions 8 are longer than the parts covered by said protrusions. at the center of the body 1 defined by the two faces 11 which limit a projection 8 is therefore less than 60 °.
As each projection further extends over the entire height of the wall 6, each face 10 is limited downwards by the upper face of the bottom 7. On the other hand, at its upper part, each projection 8 has a flange 12 overhanging the bottom. side 10.
The element 3 is removably fixed in the housing 5. It has an upper face and a lower face which are flat. In a variant, one of these faces could also be curved. Seen in plan, this element 3 has the shape of an equilateral triangle whose vertices are rounded. Its lateral surface is therefore constituted by three flat faces 13, perpendicular to the upper and lower faces, forming an angle of 600 between them,
and by three rounded faces 14 which define a cylindrical surface coaxial with the bearing. These faces 14 are also perpendicular to the upper and lower faces of the element 3 and they extend over its entire height, which is slightly less than the height of the faces 10. The dimensions of. different parts of this element are such that the length of each of the faces 14 is approximately equal to that of the faces 10.
On the other hand, the diameter of the cylindrical surface defined by the faces 14 is slightly larger than that of the surface defined by the faces 10, the difference between these two diameters being of the order of one hundredth of a millimeter. In the case where the projections 8 are made of synthetic material, or internally covered with synthetic material, the difference between said diameters could be greater, the tightening obtained could thus be controlled more easily.
To put the element 3 in place, it is first introduced into the housing 5 so that the cylindrical faces 14 engage between the projections 8. The element 3 can thus be brought into its housing so that 'it rests on the bottom 7. By means of a tool, it is then sufficient to make it perform a movement of rotation about its axis. Its faces 14 then come into coincidence with the faces 10 of the projections 8 of the bearing body 1. This movement causes a clamping of the corresponding faces (10, 14) against each other, clamping whose value is exactly determined by the dimensions that element 3 and protrusions 8 have been given.
It corresponds to the tightening that is usually provided during driving in.
It is known that when a part such as, for example, a circular stone must be driven into a support such as, for example, a kitten, an opening of the same shape as said stone is usually made in the support, but having a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the stone. To obtain a strong clamping, the diameter of the inner part is chosen approximately one hundredth of a millimeter larger than that of the opening of the support.
As the entire perimeter of the inner part then presses against the opening of the support, it may occur, during driving in, or a deformation, especially of that of the two faces present which is the most tender, a deformation which, with parts small dimensions such as watch stones, most often exceed the elastic limit, or a cut produced by the hardest part, acting as a punch or a die in the softer part. In both cases, the result is the same, that is to say that the strong tightening that one expected is illusory and that in reality the tightening tension is much lower than that which one envisaged.
With the devices described, the adjustment of the inner part to the outer part is also arranged so as to produce a strong clamping, which corresponds to that which one seeks to obtain for example by driving out a timepiece in the manner usual in its support. However, as the internal element is engaged in place not by axial displacement, but by rotation, the force which must be exerted to put it in place is much lower than during a usual driving-in. On the other hand, the engagement is more gradual.
Finally, the fact that only certain portions of the internal face of the external element are in contact with the internal element entails an important consequence: a large part of the internal face of the external element is free and it can deform towards inside. When the internal element is engaged, this internal face can therefore be
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
deform slightly and this deformation, analogous to bending, is an elastic deformation and not a permanent deformation.
Thus, when the faces 14 of the element 3 are engaged against the internal faces 10 of the projections 8, the parts of the thin circular wall 6 located opposite the flat faces 13 of the element 3, which are free, can be straighten slightly insofar as the projections 8 deviate from their initial position. The thin wall 6 is therefore subjected to a bending force, which causes an elastic deformation of this wall. As a result, even after having removed and put the element 3 back in place several times, the clamping force caused by the engagement of the faces 10 and 14 remains the same and always ensures a suitable fixing of the element 3.
In addition, as the outer diameter of the bottom 7 is greater than that of the wall 6, the bearing body 1 can be fixed by force engagement in an opening, for example of a bridge or a plate, without the wall 6 is pressed against said opening. This wall is therefore free to bend, not only inwards, at the places located opposite the faces 13, but also outwards, opposite the projections 8.
It follows from the above explanations that the flanges 12 do not fulfill an essential function for fixing the element 3. In fact, they only constitute a security. They could be deleted.
A horizontal slot could also be made at the base of each projection 8 passing through the entire thickness of the wall 6 and extending into this wall on each side of the projections to a distance slightly less than half of that which separates two adjacent projections, so that these slots leave only three pillars remaining connecting the wall 6 to the bottom 7, these pillars thus being located at an equal distance from the projections.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the faces 14 of the element 3 are connected to the faces 13 by rounded edges which ensure a progressive engagement of the faces 14 against the faces 10, during the installation of the element 3. In a variant, the faces 13 and 14 of the element 3 could also be separated by a sharp edge. In this case, the faces. 10 of the projections 8 would then be advantageously connected to the face 9 by bevelled parts which would ensure the progressive engagement mentioned above. .
On the other hand, although, in this embodiment, the three exterior faces 10 of the interior element are situated on the same surface of revolution, each of these faces could, in another embodiment , define a surface of revolution different from those defined by the other faces, these surfaces having only their axis in common. Thus one or the other of the faces 10 could be situated at a distance from the axis different from the others and thus define a cylindrical surface of different radius.
The corresponding faces 14 would likewise have different radii. Thus the interior element could only be fixed in a determined orientation.
In the second embodiment (fig. 3 and 4), the outer element is also constituted by a bearing body 15 (fig. 3) comprising a bottom. solid annular 16, in which is driven a guide element 17. On the other hand, this support only carries at its upper part two portions of cylindrical wall 18, forming two diametrically opposed tabs and delimited by a milling 20. These wall portions have each a cylindrical face 19 extending over the entire height of these wall portions.
An annular recess 21 is made in the bottom 16 of the bearing body, in the angle formed by the wall 18 and the upper face 22 of the bottom 16.
An axial stop element 23, for example a counter-pivot stone, is mounted in the body. bearing 15; it has the shape of a rectangle in plan, the small sides of which are rounded. The lateral surface of this element therefore has four faces, two of which 24, are rounded and define a cylindrical surface coaxial with said bearing body and two others, 25, are flat. The installation of this element is carried out, as in the first embodiment, by freely engaging the element 23 in its housing, its lower face resting against the face 22, and the rounded faces 24 being oriented so to be inserted between the wall portions 18.
By a rotational movement, the faces 24 are then brought into coincidence with the faces 19. These faces. 19 and 24 are adjusted so as to cause between the element 23 and the bearing body a tightening calculated in the same way as in the first embodiment. Thanks to the recess 21, the thin wall portions 18 extend below the level of the lower face of the axial stop element, so that their elasticity is increased. The engagement of the faces 24 against the faces 19 consequently causes an elastic deformation of the walls 18.
Instead of an axial stop element, one could mount in the bearing body shown in fig. 3 and 4, for example a dust cover which would be fixed to the bearing body 15 in the same way as the element 23. For this purpose, this cover would have the same shape and the same dimensions as the element 23. In In particular, its cylindrical faces would have the same diameter and the same length as those of the element 23. It would however be located at such a distance from the guide element 17 that the end of a pivot introduced into the 'opening die this element would not reach the underside of said cover. The guide element would in fact perform the function of an axial stop.
Its convex face would be turned downwards and the shank of the shaft, the pivot of which is guided by this element, would present a shoulder perpendicular to the axis of said shaft, a shoulder which would rest against the convex face of the guide element 17 . The dust cover could consist of a metal plate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
lique of aluminum, oxidized anodically or not, or of stainless steel or of another metal. It could also be made of synthetic material, for example Plexiglas (registered trademark).
Such a cover would thus have the advantage of protecting, at a relatively low cost, the oil of the guide element, by preventing dust from mixing with it.
Instead of the faces of said elements, intended to secure them one inside the other by clamping, form portions. of one or more cylindrical surfaces, they can also, in other embodiments, form portions of other surfaces of revolution such as for example truncated cones (fig. 5 and 6).
Thus, in the third embodiment (fig. 5), the body. bearing 26 has at its upper part a thin cylindrical wall 27, in which internal projections 28 are formed. The internal faces 29 of these projections are frustoconical and they extend towards the inside of the body 26, to the bottom a housing 30, into which is introduced an element 31.
In its upper part, this element 31 has corresponding frustoconical faces 32, adjusted to the faces 29 so that the engagement by rotation of the faces 32 against the faces 29 causes a strong clamping, capable of holding the inner element in place.
In the fourth embodiment. (Fig. 6), the frustoconical faces 33 of the projections 34 are limited downwards by an annular recess 35. As these projections 34 are thus formed in the upper part of a thin wall 36, the latter can be deformed elastically, when the frustoconical faces 33a of the inner element are engaged against the faces 33.
The fixing device described does not apply only to the removable fixing of a bearing in a bearing housing. On the contrary, it represents a general method of fixing, which can be applied, for example, to other bearing elements in exactly the same way as in the examples described above.
Thus, in the fifth embodiment, a metal pin 37 (fig. 7 and 8), in which are driven an axial stop element 38 and a drilled element 39, is mounted directly in an element 40 of a frame which can be a bridge or a turntable. For this purpose, the element 40 is pierced with an opening 41, the internal wall 42 of which is cylindrical. To allow fixing of the kitten 37, projections 44 with cylindrical internal faces 43, which are similar to the projections 8 of the first embodiment (FIG. 1) extend over the entire height of the wall 42.
To form these protrusions, the element 40 can be drilled to a diameter equal to that of the surface defined by the faces 43, then pass through the hole obtained a splined tool of outside diameter larger than that of this hole.
As for the kitten 37, it affects in plan the shape of an equilateral triangle the vertices of which are rounded, so that the periphery of this kitten has three flat faces 45 and three rounded faces 46 defining a cylindrical surface coaxial with the landing. In this embodiment, the positioning of the kitten 37 is carried out by means of a special tool making it possible to adjust the axial swing of the mobile pivoted in this kitten.
This tool is capable of grasping the kitten, of inserting it into the opening 41 so that the faces 46 engage between the projections 44, and this until the end of the pivot of said mobile abuts against the face. lower part of the axial stop element 38. Then said tool brings back the kitten 37 to a height corresponding to the desired axial beam, after which it causes it to undergo a rotation bringing the faces. 46 coinciding with the faces 43.
Instead of this chaton being mounted directly in a frame element (bridge or plate), as in the example of fig. 7 and 8, which requires special machining of the opening made in this element for the bearing, it can also be mounted in an intermediate body, as seen in the sixth embodiment, in which a chaton 47 ( Fig. 9) is mounted in a bearing body 48, itself driven into an opening 49 of a frame element. This bearing body 48 may have the same elements as one or other of the bearing bodies shown in FIGS. 1 to 6.
As for the kitten 47, it also has corresponding elements and in particular faces 47a capable of engaging against internal faces 48a of the bearing body, by rotation of said kitten about its axis.
The device described can obviously also be used to fix only a drilled element in a bearing body, as seen in the seventh embodiment (fig. 10). In this case, this pierced element 50 has side faces 51 defining a surface of revolution coaxial with the bearing. The parts 52 of said element, included between the faces 51 are located closer to the axis than these faces 51. As for the bearing body 53, it comprises, like the bearing body 1 of the fia. 1, projections 54, the inner faces of which 55 are engaged against the faces 51 of the element 50.
While in the examples described above the support member was the outer member, the eighth embodiment shown in FIG. 11 applies to a case where the support element is the internal element of the device. This figure in fact represents a tube 69, which can be fixed to the plate of a watch movement and inside which is guided an axis 70 carrying for example a seconds hand 71. A guide element 72, consisting of a pierced stone, is supported by said tube. For this purpose, this element 72 is mounted in a ring-shaped kitten 73, the height of which is greater than that of said element. This kitten 73 has, in its inner wall 74, projections extending over the entire height of said wall.
The element 72, of cylindrical shape, has flats 76 delimiting on its perimeter portions of cylindrical wall 77, which, during the engagement of the element
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
72 in the kitten 73, are brought into contact with the upper part of the inner faces of said projections. The kitten 73 is then mounted on the tube 69, the upper part of which has, in plan, the same shape as that of the element 72. The lower part of the internal faces of the projections 75 are therefore brought into coincidence with the faces 77n of the tube 69.
The same embodiment of the device could also be used, for example, to attach to the end of a tube forming the hub of an oscillating weight, in a self-winding watch, a drilled guide element, intended to guiding said hub on its axis rigidly mounted on a bridge of said watch.
As already mentioned above, the device described is of a general nature. It applies not only to the fastening of bearing elements, but also to the fastening of other elements of small dimensions.
Thus the ninth embodiment (fig. 12, 13 and 13a) illustrates. an example of attachment to a support of a cylindrical element, with the aim of producing a molding barrel such as those which are used for casting liquid germanium or indium, intended for the manufacture of semiconductor crystals entering into the construction of transistors.
At the end of a cylindrical support 78, pierced over its entire length with a channel 79, is fixed a synthetic corundum stone 80, itself pierced axially with a hole 81, located in the extension of the channel 79. The support 78 is generally made of stainless steel. Brought to the casting temperature of germanium or. indium, it expands in such a way that a stone made of corundum (or another synthetic material) driven out is no longer at all secured in its housing. To avoid this drawback, the stone 80 is introduced into a cylindrical housing 83 formed at the end of the support 78. This housing is delimited by a thin cylindrical wall 84, provided with projections 85 similar to the projections 8 of FIG. 1.
To increase the elasticity of the wall 84, slots 86 are made at the base of the projections 85. These slots pierce the wall 84 right through and only leave three pillars 87 connecting this wall to the solid part of the support. , these pillars 87 being interposed between the projections 85. As the stone 80 has, in plan, exactly the same shape as the element 3 of FIG. 1, it can be introduced into its housing 83 by first engaging its cylindrical faces between the projections 85. By a rotational movement, it can then be forcefully secured to the support 78.
In a variant of this embodiment (FIG. 13a), the stone 80, instead of having three flat side faces, has only one, 93. The rest of its side surface is cylindrical. As seen in fig. 13a, this stone 80 can be engaged freely between the protrusions 85. By rotation about its axis, portions of its cylindrical side surface can be brought into contact with the inner faces of the protrusions 85 to secure the stone 80 to the support 78. by tightening.
One could also and in the same way fix a stone at the end of the rod of a comparator, so as to form a feeler.
Finally, in the tenth embodiment (FIG. 14), an interior element 88, of rectangular shape, has two side faces 89 and 90 which are conical. This element can be fixed to a support having, at one of its ends, a wall 91 whose outer surface is cylindrical and whose inner surface is conical and is adjusted to the faces 89 and 90 so that the latter can be seated. press against the wall 91 by securing the element 88 to the support by tightening.
To allow the element 88 to be placed in place, a notch 92 is cut in the wall 91. It occupies a portion of this wall such that the face 89 of the element 88 can be engaged freely in this notch without the face. 90 does not come into contact with the wall 91. To fix the element 88 to the support sort, it is then sufficient to make it pivot a quarter of a turn around its axis, which engages the face 89 against the conical face of the wall 91.
The manufacturing process illustrated in Figs. 15 and 16 applies in particular to the manufacture of a bearing body similar to those of FIGS. 1, 5, 6, 9 and 10. To manufacture a bearing body according to this method, one starts with a cylindrical bar 56, in the end of which is first drilled an axial hole 57 of which the bottom has a flat annular part 57a. This drilling leaves only a cylindrical wall 60 of the bar 56 over a height equal to the depth of the hole.
A punch 58 having three wings 59, including the outer faces, is then introduced axially inside this hole. are located on a cylindrical surface with a diameter greater than that of hole 57.
When this punch is introduced into said hole, the wings 59 form three grooves in the wall 60 and push down the material removed by the tool to form these grooves. When the end of the punch 58 has reached a distance from the face 57a of the bottom of the hole 57 slightly greater than the final height of the thin wall of the bearing body, the part of the wall 60 located in the extension of said grooves has beads.
61 formed by hardened metal. The punch 58 is then withdrawn and the part of the bar 56 having said grooves is cut.
One can then machine in the bar 56 a bearing body 62 (FIG. 15) having a thin wall 63 whose internal diameter is equal to that of the hole 57, and machine them. beads 61 so as to form projections 64 having a cylindrical inner face 65 limited upwards by a flange 66 and downwards by a bottom 67, in which an opening 68 is provided for the pierced element. It is obvious that given the shape of the inner face of the wall 63, the only known methods for forming this wall
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
consist of milling operations or die-forging operations.
Using this known die-forging process, one would remove the material from the wall 63 located between the projections, 64. However, if the milling has the drawback of being long and requiring special tools, the die-forging has that of accumulating material removed from the bottom of the housing of the bearing housing and thus deform its walls. It is to avoid these drawbacks that the method described above was created.
Moreover, the punch 58 can be mounted on a spindle, so that all the machining of the bearing body can be carried out on an automatic lathe with sliding headstock, of the so-called bar turning type, which represents an additional advantage of this method. .
Finally, it is noted that after the punch 58 has been inserted in the manner described above, the beads 61 can be rotated not only in the manner shown in FIG. 15, but also so as to form the projections of the bearing body shown for example in FIGS. 5, 6, 9 and 10.
