Electrolytic Capacitor With Liquid Electrolyte The present invention relates to an electrolytic capacitor with improved liquid electrolyte.
The invention aims to create a capacitor with high resistance and extended life when it is operated at high voltages and in a temperature range of about -55 to 125 C, capacitance and resistance change only slightly in this temperature range .
The electrolyte of this capacitor is not aqueous, which fact gives the electrolytic capacitor the above-mentioned improved properties.
The electrolytic capacitor according to the invention is characterized in that the electrolyte is N, N-dimethylformamide as the solvent and an ion-supplying substance dissolved therein, such as. B. ammonium borate contains. This electrolyte is particularly useful in capacitors, one of which is made of tantalum or other suitable film-forming material.
The electrolyte according to the invention preferably consists of N, N dimethylformamide and an ion-supplying substance dissolved therein, which has the purpose of giving the electrolyte the necessary conductivity. The ion-donating substance may be present in extremely small amounts, and such an amount is usually used that does not precipitate at a temperature of -55 ° C.
When using low voltages, higher concentrations of the ion-donating substance can be used, whereas when using higher voltages, lower concentrations can be used. A preferred ionogenic substance for this electrolyte is ammonium borate, for. B. ammonium pentaborate and ammonium tetraborate, especially for application areas of high voltage.
However, the invention is not limited to this specific ion-donating substance, and other salts can be used, including other alkali borates and alkali phosphates (including ammonium phosphates) and the oxalates, citrates, tartrates, succinates, nitrates, chlorides, bichromates and acetates with good solubility in N, N dimethylformamide.
A particularly satisfactory electrolyte for the capacitor according to the invention has the following composition in percent by weight:

Tests were carried out over the life of capacitors which were impregnated with the two above electrolytes, the capacitor anodes and cathodes consisting of 0.013 mm thick tantalum foils and the separation between the electrode foils with two sheets of paper about 0.03 mm thick was carried out.
When testing the service life of these capacitors at 125 C and 150 volts DC, it was found that the units impregnated with the known electrolyte B all failed before the expiry of 22 days under the above test conditions, while the units containing the electrolyte A according to the invention were still effective and operational after 45 days.
After this period of time, the units containing electrolyte A still contained 78% of their original capacity at room temperature, while the units with electrolyte B had already decreased to 79% of their capacity after 7 days. These results show that a six-fold increase in service life is possible,
when using the electrolyte composition A instead of the known electrolyte B.
In a similar series of tests, the capacitor units were put into operation at 85 C and 300 volts DC voltage; the units containing electrolyte A still had 88% of the original capacity at room temperature after 90 days,
while the units with electrolyte B showed 84% of the original capacity after 12 days, which in this case would correspond to an approximately 8-fold improvement. In a further experiment, capacitors with electrolyte A were put into operation at 125 C and 300 volts DC voltage, and it was found that after 1600 hours (66 days) these units still 97.50 / a of their capacity measured at 120 Hz contained at room temperature.
Table II shows some properties of capacitor units impregnated with the electrolyte A at low temperature.

<tb> 99.0 <SEP> lithium chloride <SEP> 1.0 <SEP> 450 The following are further examples of soluble ionic substances that can be used for the invention:
Ammonium bromide, calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, potassium acetate, sodium acetate, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, magnesium chloride, sodium dichromate, acid sodium phosphate, succinic acid and oxalic acid.
Other inorganic and organic salts can also be used; provided that they cannot be cathodically reduced to a metal or other material at the cathode or oxidized to an improper compound at the anode.
The present N, N-dimethylformamide electrolyte is sufficiently stable and resistant to heat, light and chemical changes; It has a lower freezing point than conventional electrolytes, does not corrode the metals usually used as capacitor housings and has practically no solubility for the oxide films usually formed on the capacitor electrodes. It was also found
that the electrolyte of the present invention can retard the rate of formation of crystalline oxides in the dielectric films. In this way, the welded connection between foil and wire, which is usually the weak part of the capacitor, can be protected. The electrolyte according to the invention usually has a higher specific resistance at 25 ° C. than conventional electrolytes and shows no scintillation at 300 volts direct voltage. The N, N-dimethylformamide electrolyte shows z.
B. very small changes in viscosity within widely fluctuating temperature ranges, which property in turn can result in minimal changes in specific resistance and minimal changes in capacitance.
Since the electrolyte of the present invention is non-aqueous, it can have a lower vapor pressure than aqueous electrolytes, so that the problem of sealing the capacitor is less difficult to solve. In addition, with the new electrolyte, the difficulties can be avoided which were encountered when using known electrolytes on the basis of solvent mixtures.
These consist in the fact that one of the solvents evaporates faster than the other and in this way the chemical composition, the viscosity, the specific resistance and the freezing point of the electrolyte are changed; this can lead to strong fluctuations in capacity. In the case of an electrolyte according to the invention, which contains, for example, almost 100% NN-dimethylformamide, up to 5019 / o of the electrolyte can be lost (e.g.
B. as a result of a leaky seal), without a noticeable change in the electrical properties or the operability of the capacitor would suffer.
Because the inventive, N, N-dimethylformamide-containing capacitors are generally suitable for higher voltages than the previously used electrolytic capacitors, they make the use of parallel-connected unit units possible instead of low-voltage units connected in series, which previously often used Achievement of high dielectric strength were used. You can therefore use smaller units; the production is simplified, the risk of failure is reduced and significant material and time savings are achieved.
